My husband said something to me the other day that got me thinking. He was making fun of me spending so much of my time on quilting. He said he thought it was something Grandma's do. lol He told me later that he actually wanted to tell me to find a hobby for my own age. I was kind of hurt at that comment.

But, back to my question...how old are we all? I'm willing to bet I'm not the only 38 year old mother of 3 children under the age of 12, eh?

cherylynne 09-28-2010 03:25 PM

I'm retired, but my 25 year old daughter loves to make quilts. She isn't married, though.

wolfkitty 09-28-2010 03:26 PM

I started quilting when I was 20. That was over 30 years ago. Other posts show pictures of teenagers and younger learning to quilt!

texas granny 09-28-2010 03:28 PM

Tell your DH one of my DGD made her first quilt before she started to school. She pick the fabric and made the quilt top.she was only 4 when she started it

Quiltforme 09-28-2010 03:29 PM

nonnie 09-28-2010 03:29 PM

I started when I was 20 and that was 35yrs ago, sometimes quilted more, sometimes less. Have continued through today and enjoyed teaching others.

KathyAire 09-28-2010 03:30 PM

I didn't start quilting until I was 35, but we still have quite a bit in common. How old are your kiddos?

athenagwis 09-28-2010 03:31 PM

I am 29 with one kid and I have been quilting for 11 years. :)

I am 46 years old and have 14 children, ages 23 to 5 yrs old. I started quilting at about 38 and it had nothing to do with age. I am also a red belt in tae kwon do, two belts away from becoming a black belt, which I fully intent to make irregardless of age. LOL I do think some of us have more time for quilting as we be come empty nesters and retire.

I also second that many very young people, both male and female, are learning to quilt. My youngest one was 3 and she still quilts at thirteen.

Moon Holiday 09-28-2010 03:37 PM

I like to think of myself as a young 65 with a beautiful 26 yo GD who has recently caught the quilting bug along with her adorable 6 yo DD. They recently finished their first quilt, and have begun making Christmas gifts (placemats & wristlets).

I say you're never too young or too old to become a quilter!

You go girl!!! Did you adopt any of your children? Or are they all biological? Sorry if I'm being too nosey.

amazon 09-28-2010 03:41 PM

41 and mother of 4 (ages-13,11,almost 9 and 5) :D

MISHNJIM 09-28-2010 03:45 PM

I'm 43 and started quilting about 11 years ago. It's funny though...I kinda thought the same thing a long time ago until I started and then got hooked.

SuziC 09-28-2010 03:54 PM

I started quilting when i was only 25 and now i am a Gramma and love that too. Age is only a number that too many people get hung up on. I still feel about 30! My muscles sometimes remind me that i'm older now (55) I just take some tylenol and keep on going

tortoisethreads 09-28-2010 04:30 PM

36 yr old quilter here with a 6 and 9 yr. old! I'm heavily tattood to boot! Yep, I get some strange looks from the local quilt shops!

brookemarie19 09-28-2010 04:36 PM

I am 27 with 4 kids (also under the age of 12, or that is my oldest anyway). I think you are right there in the middle of ages to be a quilter. I started a year and a half ago and havent gotten too much done, but my 11 and almost 6 year old are just as into it as me. Tell your hubby that he's wrong. Thats like saying Fishing is only for Grampas LOL

Jodie02b 09-28-2010 05:01 PM

I'm 29 with 3 boys! and don't feel bad all my friends think i'm having a crisis but not before asking me for something.

i'll be 74 in december, i still work 4 days a week as a barber, do long arm quilting for the public and still find some time to do my own things.

I'm just a baby of 58. I started quilting about five years ago.

mamahippychicky 09-28-2010 05:34 PM

I'm 41 with 2 kids, 14 & 16. I've been quilting for about 8 years I think.

mypatookis 09-28-2010 05:36 PM

I'm 60, and have been quilting for a short time now, but wish I would have started quilting at an early age. I could have retained so much more information! Now my mind is so full, I have to let something go before letting something new take it's place! I still feel like I'm in my 30s and keep wondering who the old lady in the mirror is and wish she would leave me alone! hehe
Love my quilting... glad I have the time to enjoy it now. Quilting is for Grandmas? Okay, whatever... I agree to disagree

Ramona Byrd 09-28-2010 05:38 PM

I started with Grandma's old flip flop, the treadle where you push it up and down to get the needle to go up and down. That is how I described it for years. I remember having to sit on the edge of the chair to reach the foot power, so must have been quite young. All I did was put two squares together and get them together with others till I had a big sheet of different colors. I remember it was very heavy, then Grandma and aunts took over and made it into a real quilt. All of them seemed to have little chunks of yarn sticking up here and there, so they were all tied together.

bjnicholson 09-28-2010 05:38 PM

I'm 68, retired for two yrs and quilting for 4 mo's. Well, actually, researching quilting since June. Today I got 2 quilts from Hancock's for my DGD's. So, I've been a quilter for, oh, about 6 hrs!

moonrise 09-28-2010 05:43 PM

I'm 42, no kids, and have been quilting and sewing since I was old enough to pick up a needle and thread. :)

featherweight 09-28-2010 05:44 PM

I am 66, started quilting about 8 years ago. I wish I would have started a long time ago. Just hope I live long enough to use all my stash..LOL. I absolutely love qulting. My husband is my greatest supporter.

Daisygirl 09-28-2010 05:46 PM

I'm 46 years ok'd and have a 14 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. I've been quilting for about three or four years now. My family keep asking me how many quilts (for beds) do I need.

dojo36 09-28-2010 05:48 PM

SherriB 09-28-2010 05:54 PM

Daisygirl 09-28-2010 06:01 PM

It's kind of like husbands and shoes, they just don't get that

pocoellie 09-28-2010 06:03 PM

I'm 60, if you would have told me that I would actually be sewing and quilting when I was in high school, I would have told you, you were crazy. LOL

cjomomma 09-28-2010 06:12 PM

I'm 42 with 3 kids, 3, 15 and 16. I started 6 yrs. ago but didn't get serious about it until 4yrs. ago when pregnant with little man.

Terri C 09-28-2010 06:33 PM

I'm 50 with 3 stepkids all grown and out on their own. I started quilting when I was 31 and can't imagine not doing it now. I'm absolutely addicted to quilting and not one bit ashamed of my addiction. LOL :)
