I wanted to make a king sized quilt for my step daughter and husband for Christmas. I had been gathering fabrics for a black, white and red quilt and decided it would be perfect for them.
The biggest quilt I have quilted on my Janome was a queen and it was a struggle. I decided to do a version of quilt as you go. I made nine blocks with nine smaller blocks in each. I did simple quilting because the fabric is so busy, quilting wouldn't show very well anyway. It was still a bear to handle by the time I got to adding the last few big blocks to the quilt. Today I finished sewing it together and started sewing on the binding which I made from leftovers from the quilt. I also made my joining strips from the leftovers so it blends in pretty well.Tomorrow I will finish the binding and throw it in the washer. It measures about 116" square. I'll post pictures tomorrow if it doesn't fall apart when I wash it!  I don't think I will ever be so happy to have something finished!! |
Cant wait to see the pictures..I bet its beautiful!

Bit off more than you could chew but persevered like a good little quilter! Thanks for carrying on the torch! It's going to be beautiful!
You always do such great work Ditter. I can't wait to see it! :)
Looking forward to seeing the picture, and congratulations for hanging in there to finish it!

How funny, I'm planning a king size black, red and white quilt for my own bed! I bought pretty much the whole line of the "After Dark" fabric collection from Connecting Threads just the other day, just for it! (actually, it IS the whole line, cause I got the FQ bundle with all of them, plus extra yardage of the ones I liked best) AND I am also planning to QAYG, the same way you did!
I am REALLY looking forward to seeing your finished project, I've been looking for inspiration! |
Looking forward to the finished photo!
Sounds beautiful. I look forward to seeing the pictures tomorrow.
Oh, I can't wait for the photos. I love Black White and Red. Have some already to go in a quilt when I finish some of my WIP.
Looking forward to seeing it!

I bet it's gorgeous. Can't wait to see your pics.
Can't wait to see it. And it won't fall apart--your work is great!
I am collecting for a black, white and red quilt so looking forward to seeing yours...
Can hardly wait for the picture!
That is a huge quilt. I have done one like that on my machine and it was a bear. I can't wait to see yours.
Can't wait to see that one!

Any king size quilt is a bear and I agree with all of you on that. I made one for my daughter and hand quilted it on a Grace frame. Took me several months to do that and a whole day just to hand stitch the binding! It came out beautiful but I neglected to take the weight of the batting into consideration and it must weigh a ton but she loves it and that is all that matters to me. She selected her colors and was happy with the result. After all, isn't that what we strive for?

Hi
I also am planning a B/R/W quilt for my son. I just can't decide on a pattern. Waiting to see yours. |
I just finished a lap quilt on my Janome. I really had to fight with it. It is an old machine and the throat plate opening is only a little over 5 inches. I would like to be able to buy a new machine with bigger opening and stitch regulator but I don't think it will ever be in my budget.

Can't wait for the pics ditter, and I'm sure you are glad that one's over with
Congrats! on finishing it. I can't wait to see pics

I am really interested in the QAYG method. It seems perfect for those with small working areas.
Which QAYG method did you use? Can you recommend a book/author that explains it clearly. I am working on a big quilt -- and will have to QAYG. Feeling intimidated, but you have given me a push to keep going and just do it! Thanks, Ditter! Can't wait to see your pics!

Can't wait to see. My dilema also, I can only qayg, and even that gets too unweildy, there must be a better way without investing tons of money which I just can't justify. Has anyone tried the Flynn frame? Is it any good or worth it?

Cant wait to see it!!!
