It looks perfect please trust in yourself, the recipient and especially the baby/child will come to love it. Quilts are dimensional, once they are quilted. Beautiful choice of colors you have a great eye and YOU CAN DO THIS!

theresa.redington 02-04-2011 03:13 AM

Looks good to me. Can't wait to see the finished pic. Have fun!

Welcome to the board. You're off to a very good start. Your points look wonderful. And, your choice of fabrics are superb. I think this is going to be one humdinger of a pretty quilt. You go girl!

OmaForFour 02-04-2011 04:21 AM

Go to Missouri Star Quilt Company Tutorials. There are a gazillion tutorials and you will get great help. I refer to it any time I have a question as well as asking board members who are fabulous quilters, so helpful and friendly.

Also, don't worry so much about everything being exactly perfect. Have fun with it. Your family members won't know that you have something just a tiny bit off from time to time.

I just made two large quilts for my twin grandchildren for their birthdays. They will get them tomorrow. They won't know there are errors in both of them. They will love them.

Don't be so hard on yourself. The evidence is in the star picture you posted. You are very good at quilting.

I have put together sooo many quilt tops and taken apart sooo many quilt tops and struggled for years with quilting. I am sure I have made at least 10 to 20 tops and taken each and everyone of them completely apart because I just wasn't sure of them. I don't have any family that lives nearby and I currently don't know anyone nearby that quilts. My husband was starting to get frustrated with me and he suggested that I look for some help and get up and over this mountain that I seem to be climbing. I promised my husband that this would be the year that I learn to quilt from start to finish ~ even if I have to pull out a bazzillion or more stitches.

So, here I am...I am currently waiting for the start of a quilting class and I am currently working on a top for what I hope turns into a baby quilt for my husband's cousin. This quilt is supposed to have a huge star in the middle of it. Then it will be framed with two different widths of border and then binding. I am enclosing a photo in hopes that some of you might take a look at what I have done so far and give me some feedback.

Are my squares and points lined up close enough? Am I on the right track? I really need all the help I can get right now, so I thank you all in advance for your feedback, both positive and negative.

Welcome from northeast CA., so glad you joined us. I think that it looks great, you're doing fine. There's a lot of friendly, talented people on the board that if you have a problem, just ask and someone will be able to help you. It sounds like though you think your quilts have to be "perfect", I don't think it can be done. You're off to a great start.

karenpatrick 02-04-2011 04:42 AM

Looks good to me. I love the fabric. Don't be so hard on yourself. Quilting is supposed to be fun. You can drive yourself nuts trying to be perfect. Perfection is unattainable. I know. I've tried. Whoever you gift your quilts to will only see the hours of work and the love that went into them.

edensgaite 02-04-2011 05:53 AM

I think it looks awesome...great job!

I agree. Take apart a seam or two if they're really off and don't fit in the block. But if you've gotten as far as finishing a top, DON'T TAKE IT APART!!! It's probably just fine!. Quilt it (or have it quilted) and love it or give it away. Let us see it first! :)

featherweight 02-04-2011 05:58 AM

I think you are doing great!!! I live just south of you in Westminster, almost neighbors..

lillybeck 02-04-2011 06:43 AM

Great job and beautiful fabric. You will be just fine.

maryb119 02-04-2011 06:45 AM

It looks good to me!

GABBYABBY 02-04-2011 06:51 AM

You are doing a fabulous job!!!! The colors
are beautiful. I am putting this on my to-do list.

Nona 02-04-2011 07:14 AM

the paraphrase my sister in law, the object is completion and not perfection ( perfection comes years later) Don't sweat the small stuff. 90% of the people won't even recognize an imperfection....because they can't sew a stich. Finish it...If you are really unhappy donate it to a Charity program...They would be happy with any quilt.

redeagle 02-04-2011 07:23 AM

Recently there was a topic about too much emphasis on perfection. When a person looks at a quilt they look at the whole completed quilt. They are not looking to see if points match or are nipped off, etc. unless they are a quilt judge. After all you have been thru with quilting, I'm surprised that you are still soldiering on. I would have quit long ago. There are a few basics to quilting, obviously, but there are no real "right" or "wrong" so lighten up on yourself, relax and enjoy your work. After all, you can always come here for some encouragement!

Billyjo5 02-04-2011 07:29 AM

I think your star is beautiful, good job

bink 02-04-2011 08:14 AM

your junctions match up very well
Be careful that on the tips of your stars you need a generous
1/4 inch allowance, so as to not lose your points when you sew your blocks together.
Colors are terrific---keep going -- you are doing great.

Queen Deb 02-04-2011 08:23 AM

Looks great! Love the colors :)

and hello from another Loveland person!

matraina 02-04-2011 08:32 AM

I certainly can't see anything wrong with your quilt. I think it will be beautiful. Make sure to post a pic of the finished quilt.

joyce888 02-04-2011 08:45 AM

You've got a great start and your fabric choices are beautiful. Your points are right on. I was always critical of my work too until I talked with many wonderful quilters at my LQSs who told me I was being too hard on myself and most of what I could see others did not.

Cyn 02-04-2011 08:47 AM

It looks perfect to me :)

LOOKS PERFECT TO ME

weezie 02-04-2011 08:59 AM

You're doing great! Just 2 pieces of advice:

1. Check each block (often) during construction to make sure that your points match, as in equal distance from the edge of the block ... 1/4" seam allowance is ideal, of course. A key thing for me is that each point matches each other, so that when I sew the blocks together, I'm not chopping off any points or leaving gaps between points & seam. In your picture, it looks like the left fabric star point might not have enough seam allowance (white fabric). That would be a really easy fix, though.

2. Don't sew when you are tired. Yesterday I was "on a roll", but I got tired. I had sewed with no mistakes for several hours, but I got over tired and did not stop when I should have; I ended up having to un-sew several seams.

One more thing I'd like to say. I agree with everyone that you should not be so hard on yourself. HOWEVER, if yours is a personality that cannot live with "just good enough" and imperfections, it's part of who you are. You are not going to develop a different personality or a personality trait and should therefore strive to develop your quilting skills to a point that satisfies you, as your husband suggests.

katieranch 02-04-2011 09:05 AM

It looks good, your squares and triangles match nicely. The only point I would worry about and it may just be the way the picture shows it, but you want to make sure you have a 1/4" of fabric beyond your outside points. I struggle with this also!

GammaLou 02-04-2011 09:14 AM

Oh, pretty fabrics. Should make a cute baby quilt! DON'T unsew any seams unless really bad. Non-quilters don't see the detail that you do. Your piecing looks perfect. Relax and enjoy the process

Willa 02-04-2011 09:23 AM

Do you do everything in life perfect? If not, why start now with quilting? Not even store bought pieced quilts are perfect. Just do your best and be happy. Honestly you'll get better the more you sew.

Marvel 02-04-2011 09:48 AM

Your points match perfectly. Also I see colors that go together for a nice top. The other important thing I see is that 1/4 inch allowance at the edge of your block. Great start. You have learned a lot more than you thought. On here you can see a lot of things that will inspire you. All questions asked.Welcome from Ok. Marvel

Bluequilter 02-04-2011 10:18 AM

The star looks great and I love your fabric choices!

scraphq 02-04-2011 10:22 AM

Looks very good to me. The quilt police will not be knocking at your door!

huggabug123 02-04-2011 10:57 AM

Lol...yep, the 1/4" is almost nonexistant on some of the points. My daughter came up with a great idea. She says, why don't you finish and then embroider little catterpillar's on the points or the areas where you see a possible mistake. So, I am going to make the catterpillars crawling in various directions if the points turn out looking kind of square. Maybe a small butterfly toward the center so that it matches with the buttefly / caterpillar fabric. I would do them in a solid color of course since the piece already has a lot of patterns and colors in it.

Also, the store on Denver Avenue in Loveland is where I am taking my classes. They are really nice. I had my first class and I did my home work. I compared the class pieces with what I made for the baby quilt and I am really pleased with how they both are turning out. Now I am struggling with wanting to run off in different directions with more ideas now that I have a bit of assurance that I am on the right track.

Right now I am off to get my walking foot as I had to order it and it has come in. I have gone from anxious to excited. Thank you all again sooo much. ~~Happy Quilting~~

~ Carol ~

It doesn't get much better than that! Keep up the good work.

grannypat7925 02-04-2011 11:28 AM

You are definitely on the right track!! Looks perfect so far!

Tweety2911 02-04-2011 11:37 AM

Your block looks perfect to me. Well done! Ditto on the great advice already given!

Momof3Es 02-04-2011 11:40 AM

I think it looks great!! Don't give up! Keep going. I think you are like a lot of us on this board and you are just being too hard on yourself. Most people here don't lie. They tell you what they honestly think!! If they see something that you could do to fix it I'm sure they will pipe up!! Just don't give up!

penski 02-04-2011 11:49 AM

looks like you are off to a good start to me !!! no one learned to quilt in a day or more !!! a lot of people have been quilting for years and are still learning, dont be so hard on yourself and go for it learn by your mistakes and come here for some help when you are not sure , i have learned a lot from this site

watson's mom 02-04-2011 11:53 AM

Hi Carol...your star looks great, love the colours. Everyone here on the board had to start somewhere, we're all in that boat together. We have all made mistakes, big and small ones. Don't be so hard on yourself and don't strive for perfection. There is no such thing as a mistake anyway, we like to call them design changes. Have fun and happy quilting. Carol....also.

noveltyjunkie 02-04-2011 11:58 AM

That quilt is going to be lovely. Don't you dare rip anything. Just relax and enjoy it!

Butterflyblue 02-04-2011 11:59 AM

You picked lovely fabrics for this baby quilt.

It sounds like your problem isn't that you don't know how to make a quilt, but that you don't trust your work and expect a lot of perfection.

Maybe set aside some time/materials to make a small string pieced quilt or "wonky star" quilt, something that doesn't require precise seams and matching, to learn to accept and maybe even enjoy imperfection?

Believe me, I am not a perfectionist when it comes to quilting, but I enjoy myself and the quilts I give as gifts have all been well-received.

janb 02-04-2011 12:04 PM

Looks great to me. Points, colors, just get on with it and give it with love.

FroggyinTexas 02-04-2011 12:08 PM

Adopt this rule: If it can't be seen from a galloping horse or a speeding train, it is perfect. Have fun. froggyintexas
