Am I the only bare foot quilter out there?

It has gotten colder here in DE, and I got concerned about my cold feet, then I realized that when I enter my sewing/office nook I leave my slippers at the door. I tried to use my machine with my slippers on, it is an entirely different feel. Just couldn't do it, yesterday I bought slipper socks (with those little rubber things on the bottom) and am struggling to get used to them. What do you all wear on your feet when you are at your machine?

nygal 01-19-2013 05:30 AM

I take off my sandles when I sew at my machine. I don't like the feel of having shoes on when I am pushing the machine pedal. I feel I have better control of the pedal without shoes on.

donnajean 01-19-2013 05:32 AM

I have some lighter weight & very flexible slippers I use to sew with. Definitely too cold to go barefoot this time of the year.

Joset 01-19-2013 05:35 AM

i use socks this time of year but summer i am barefooted. i cannot use shoes
on the foot pedal i just dont judge it right when pushing down.

Dyan 01-19-2013 05:36 AM

I take my shoes off as soon as I walk in my door, I always sew barefooted...I do once and awhile wear my socks if it is cold, since my machine is in front of a large picture window...

Always sew barefoot. Can't control machine well with shoes now.In FL almost always barefoot. One of the small pleasures of being retired.

lillybeck 01-19-2013 05:39 AM

I am a barefoot kind of girl. Now that I am older I do put on socks occasionally to wear around the house.

QuiltE 01-19-2013 05:43 AM

Shoes on!
(sandals in the summer, and they stay on)
YIKES ... I could never go barefoot ... and find pins on the floor! OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!! :D

GemState 01-19-2013 05:56 AM

Socks in winter, barefoot in summer.

Iamquilter 01-19-2013 06:23 AM

Can't walk without shoes , so shoes on all the time.

rebeljane 01-19-2013 06:27 AM

No shoes or socks in the summer but I wear thick bed socks in the winter

Mariposa 01-19-2013 06:27 AM

I usually go barefoot, but if cold, I will wear footies or socks.

I'm the same way

mltquilt 01-19-2013 06:40 AM

Barefoot or socks for the most part. Spent too many years going barefoot as a kid.

BellaBoo 01-19-2013 06:41 AM

I put on shoes every day as part of getting dressed. I don't take them off to sew.

Minnesewta-sam 01-19-2013 06:46 AM

If I'm in the house I wear slippers (year round). I can sew either with them or barefoot.

bunniequilter 01-19-2013 07:17 AM

I end up with left foot encased in socks and or slippers and right foot bare for the machine pedal.

QuiltnNan 01-19-2013 07:17 AM

i always sew barefoot at home. when i quilt away from home, though, i do wear shoes, although i really want to take them off :)

mighty 01-19-2013 07:21 AM

I wear slippers in the winter, and flip flops in the summer.

Me too. I love my fleece socks in winter!

That's what I do too!

nycquilter 01-19-2013 07:59 AM

Barefoot 99% of the time, socks the other 1%. I have to take off my shoes to test a machine--the owner always laughs but knows I do this. Even at retreats, the shoes come off. I simply cannot sew with shoes on, never could, and likely never will! I get teased about this a lot at retreats.

GrandmaNewt 01-19-2013 08:01 AM

I am not a fan of being barefoot, so I always have some sort of footwear on. When I use my sewing machine, I can't sew comfortably in most of my shoes so in the winter I have one special pair of sewing slippers, and in the summer I have a special pair of sewing sandals.

NJ Quilter 01-19-2013 08:04 AM

Barefoot here unless it's bitter cold then best case it's just socks. I even wear my flip flops outside in the winter unless I'm out for an extended period and it's really cold. Hate shoes!

pyffer3 01-19-2013 08:05 AM

I can't sew with shoes on either. I sew with a slipper on the left foot propped on a small stool and right foot bare. When it's really cold I have one of those tiny cheap heaters I put in front of my feet for a little added warmth. I never thought others had this same issue....I feel like there is more control with my bare foot. I like to drive barefoot too, but can't always do that! LOL

majormom 01-19-2013 08:09 AM

Up until the cold weather, I'm with you, I sew with bare feet. When it gets cold I wear sneaker socks. Keeps my feet toasty!

Lyncat 01-19-2013 08:36 AM

I'm always barefoot! I learned years ago how to put my feet down on carpet as I walk so if there is a pin or needle lurking it won't go deep into my foot. Now I have tile floors so it seems safer!

wolph33 01-19-2013 08:36 AM

bare footer here.my sewing room is carpeted and over the basement which has a wood furnace-so I am lucky to have a warm floor.

quilter2090 01-19-2013 08:42 AM

I use my athletic shoes. I never run around barefoot, ever. I have dificulty walking so I need the treads on the bottom of my shoes to keep me from slipping and falling.

crafty pat 01-19-2013 08:43 AM

Flip flops are my main choice around the house and I take off my right one when I am ready to sew. When you live in Texas you have to be careful of what might be hiding in the carpet than can give you a nasty sting if you step on it without something on your feet.

sewmary 01-19-2013 08:45 AM

Always was barefoot in the house so sewed barefoot. Now have to wear something due to feet/back problems. Have a nice pair of clog type slippers with arch support. But they come off in the sewing room.

Sew barefoot or in my socks at a public place.

]my sister and friend takes shoes a socks off???

codyormoe 01-19-2013 08:50 AM

I hate shoes so I'm usually barefoot, winter or summer. In extreme cases when my feet are just freezing I have a pair of fleece socks I'll wear, comfy and loose. I was ALWAYS barefoot as a kid and have some nasty scars on one of my feet where I stepped on a broken bottle and sliced my foot open right where the big toe meets my foot and also my iner arch. Had to have many, many stitches and still remember it to this day.....yet I still never wear shoes if I can help it. I'll even run out to the car barefoot in the winter if I need something, it's such a waste of time to put on socks and shoes for a 30 second trip outside.

It doesn't feel right pushing the pedal with anything on my feet, I feel like a clod if I try to sew with my shoes on. Maybe it's all in my head but socks and shoes make me feel so confined.

nannyrick 01-19-2013 08:52 AM

Either barefoot or now that it cold, socks. Don't have a problem with socks

21quilter 01-19-2013 09:06 AM

Put me on the socks or barefoot list. I feel like I have better control with my foot pedal.

Never have been much of a shoe person anyway.

DOTTYMO 01-19-2013 09:12 AM

As a child I had to wear surgical boots in white . Soul key my parents understood why they were always dirty. When I went into the house just took boots off. Since then when I come home I take off my shoes and never put anything on. I even nip to car go into garden and to neighbours without shoes. I hate shoes inside. Socks well I may in very -0 degrees cold but at night I always have feet outside the covers no socks. I not only like using sewing machine without shoes but I do prefer to drive without shoes but it is illegal so I don't.

LynnVT 01-19-2013 09:20 AM

As a Vermonter I have very cold floors much of the year, so I'm rarely barefoot. Also as I've aged it has become uncomfortable to walk without something on my feet. I think it's collagen loss in your feet. Anyway, I occasionally sew on my Janome' smooth plastic pedal in the summer without shoes, but the Featherweight has two bumps that I think really hurt the ball of my foot without shoes. So do you all drive a car barefoot, too? Isn't that pretty much the same thing? I just don't get it. Guess it's all what you get used to. Mom taught me to sew and I don't every remember her sewing barefoot. Besides, there are always pins all over the place when I sew. Ouch! To each her own.

patchsamkim 01-19-2013 09:31 AM

I keep my house cool...64...so can't go barefoot in the winter...but have gotten used to slipper socks...never can quilt in a shoe...all summer is barefoot time for me...and as much of spring and fall as I can.

This is me! (And so many others!)

I don't like wearing shoes in general...last thing I put on before I leave the house and first thing I take off when I get home! So it's only natural that I sew with either bare feet or socks.

TerryQuilter 01-19-2013 09:52 AM

I have to "feel" my foot pedal, I barefoot it or wear a thin runners sock.
