Surely I'm not the only one to make a quilt for a pet. I have made lots of quilts for grandkids but I have one unmarried dau who has a golden retriever. It was sort of a joke. She complained that her sisters all had quilts because they had kids and she felt left out so I made a 45x45 quilt for her dog. Every a.m. she spreads the quilt out over the dog's bed and every nite the dog remakes the bed. She digs the quilt up into a pile and when the pile is to her liking she lies down with her head on the pile of quilt. Now if THAT isn't appreciation, I don't know what is! LOL
P.S My dogs don't have quilts. They use mine which is on my bed!

Welcome to the board from Southern California.

No, you are not the only one. I have not made one for my dogs but there are many on here who have made them for their pets.

Quilter7x 01-06-2011 11:22 AM

When one of our cats died, I made one for the casket my hubby made for her. Our other cat had many "cat mats" as I like to call them. The animals love them and we people love that they can dirty that up and then just throw it in the washer!

Welcome to the board. :)

Kate Knoeck 01-06-2011 11:22 AM

I am glad you made one for a dog. After all Dogs are part of the family too. Why should they be left out. However I hope you used thick fabric otherwise you might be making another soon. :-D

Ramona Byrd 01-06-2011 11:28 AM

I made quilts for each of my two rescue cats, but they only use them when I'm in the same room with them. When I go to bed, so do they, right beside me in bed.
Should I go to the bathroom, both of them hurry in front of me so that I don't get lost!!

Check out my current avitar here. That's Ranger on his new quilt, when we first brought him home. In the pic I am posting are quilts for the other two. One with purple is for our old lady Beagle, Katie, then the one with red is for my pup, Harley, & yes, they love their quilts & know who's is who's. It was fun making them too, lol....

Well of course I make quilts for my Great Grand Doggie. She is a choclate lab and was the ring bearer at my Grand Daughters wedding. She did so well. I made her a neck scarf and embroidered her name on it. She took it out of the box and drug it around the house until it is now a piece of fringe. Love all my Grand doggies and Grand kitties.

AngieS 01-06-2011 11:41 AM

I don't have dogs but that is sweet! :XD:

bjnicholson 01-06-2011 11:44 AM

My son's dog used to lay on his bed with his head on the pillow and his paws all curled up like a little kid. He was a huge German Shephard. It was too funny!

JulieR 01-06-2011 11:49 AM

I would, but two of my dogs would just chew them to bits anyway. Instead, the BEST thing in the world to them is a bowtucks handle. I make long ones just for them and they drag them EVERYWHERE!

I have made numerous quilts for my basset, Otis and chocolate lab, Moosie. My sister-in-law thought I was wierd because I made a special trip to a quilt shop to buy fabric for a flannel quilt for Otis. Otis has about four quilts around the house - two on his night bed and a couple more on his bed in my sewing room. He has both summer and winter (flannel) quilts. I think he appreciates my quilts more than anyone!

Hi Karen, I can almost see you waving from central IN. We spent most of our time in southwestern OH.

Candace 01-06-2011 12:20 PM

I made a quilt for my dog. He sleeps with it every night.

EasyPeezy 01-06-2011 12:29 PM

I wish I could make a teeny tiny quilt for our budgie but so far I haven't
found the appropriate pattern. Don't think the gold fish would appreciate
one in his bowl.

Is the dog in your picture a basset?

dsb38327 01-06-2011 01:14 PM

I didn't make it, but my dog had a baby quilt. I called it a blanket. I could put the blanket anywhere in the house and tell him "Go get on your blanket". He would find the blanket and lay down on it.

Raggiemom 01-06-2011 01:19 PM

My darlings have several quilts. The problem is that they think every quilt I work on is theirs!

vjengels 01-06-2011 01:21 PM

My Greyhound has 4 quilts for sleeping and a coat made from an antique double wedding ring. I was just thinking of making her another quilt , maybe a 'minky'

hperttula123 01-06-2011 02:17 PM

your not the only one. I make little quilts for my cats. I put them in their favorite spots to lay so the hair collects on them and not my furniture. So easy to wash those instead of the big quilts in the house. :)

LAB55 01-06-2011 02:26 PM

Hello from Western Maryland !!
My girl ( avatar ) has a jean & flannel quilt she uses in the living room, I also made her a coat from denim & flannel. She just loves them ! :-)

Stitchnripper 01-06-2011 02:27 PM

Oh no, you're not alone. First I knitted some small afghans for my grandpuppies but one of them found it tasty. Then I made some small quilts which they like very much.

CarrieAnne 01-06-2011 02:34 PM

LOL, redeagle. So funny!

barefoot quilter 01-06-2011 02:39 PM

are you kidding i love making quilts or other thing for pets of all kinds

redeagle 01-06-2011 02:41 PM

I just got word that the golden retriever that I made the quilt for is on her way to the vets for the BIG shot. She would be 12 yrs old in a couple of weeks. She has cancer. Having made this trip myself several times over the years, I really bad for my daughter.

featherweight 01-06-2011 02:43 PM

I am so sorry. That is the reason we don't have a doggy right now. After having to do this same thing, We just couldn't handle doing it again. It was like loosing one of our Children!!!

My heart goes out to you and your daughter. These precious beings become family, no longer just pets. Loss is difficult. I am glad you have a wonderful memory of her and her quilt.

Stitchnripper 01-06-2011 03:12 PM

How sad. We had to take our beloved German shepherd for that shot a few years ago. While it was the right thing for him we are not over losing him.

OneMoreQuilt 01-06-2011 03:19 PM

Welcome from Illinois. My puppy likes to share with me!!! When he's old enough to appreciate a quilt of his own, I'll make one for him!

raedar63 01-06-2011 04:48 PM

No She is still with me, she is the best dog I have ever had, I just don't know what I will do when she passes. The dog I burried with his quilt was a a very special akita named brut he was a great dog too but not a snuggler like the basset.

Welcome from AZ! I currently don't have any furbabies, but I have made several quilts for friends and family's furbabies. Seems as tho the more the word gets out about them, the more requests I get! Furbabies know a good thing when they see it!

kbs 01-06-2011 07:49 PM

My dog thinks the quilts on my bed are his, so I guess they are.

littlehud 01-06-2011 09:27 PM

My cats love my quilts so I guess I should make them some of their own. Sounds good to me.

Jim 01-06-2011 09:33 PM

all our 4 legged babies have quilts or mats...even my grandogs get them...we also make them for our vet to use in crates..I use scraps to make them of all sizes for all the 4 legged babies..They esp. love flannel ones

Quiltaddict 01-06-2011 11:06 PM

I have been wanting to make one for my cat but haven't gotten to it yet. For now, she lays on all my quilts.

QM 01-07-2011 12:15 AM

Many people have animals with quilts. My dog has one, which she has to move around before sleeping. I did have a tied flannel quilt, until my DH's parrot carefully untied every tie!! He liked to use the edge of the quilt to climb onto the bed, UNDER the quilt, sneak up on me, then go to sleep with his head just sticking out. Sorry no pix. My allergies got bad and the parrot went to another home.

Helenq 01-07-2011 03:06 AM

I have made ALLOT of quilts for dogs. When I had gotten my mid-arm machine I wanted to practice learning all the fancy stitches (I still do). I had read somewhere that you can make cage/dogs quilts. I have given allot to the kennel where we got our dog and also to the kennel where we board our dog when we go away. It is nice to walk in a see all these lonely dogs waiting to be rescued laying on a soft warm blanket. Some dogs get so attached that they get upset when the quilt is removed to be cleaned. Makes me feel good!!!!
