There is a right and there is a wrong side.
We can choose which is which.

PattyS 07-30-2010 04:26 AM

Of course, I find there is always one person that will say, " Didn't you use the wrong side?" Ask to see their Quilt Police Badge!! I use what side I like so go for it!!

quilt3311 07-30-2010 04:37 AM

Yes, use the back side. I sometimes use both sides of a fabric in the same quilt. I've never had any of the "quilt police" even notice. Go for it!!

Ripped on Scotch 07-30-2010 04:41 AM

As long as you use the "wrong" side throughout the entire quilt you will be fine, you won't even notice that the other side was even an option.

Pegleg 07-30-2010 05:02 AM

Hey, you paid for both sides didn't you? So now the fabric is yours. You can play with it any way you please.

Pegleg 07-30-2010 05:03 AM

You can use both sides if you want. This gives you 2 fabrics to use if it is to be scrappy. Otherwise I'd use the one side throughout as suggested.

Numa 07-30-2010 05:17 AM

Almost every quilt I've ever made has a border out of the "wrong" side of a fabric. It co ordinates with the colors I used of course, but is different enough to make a border that frames the quilt.

tt_l_c 07-30-2010 05:27 AM

Nope! Use the the backside if it is much nicer and you like it! No one is ever going to know but you.

The fun thing about quilting is that you decide how to use fabric. I have seen the front, back, a bleached version of a fabric, and overdyed version of a fabric used. Only your imagination limits you. Have fun with your fabric. Use it as you see fit!!

tadpoles_62 07-30-2010 05:44 AM

i also have bought fbric like that , i used both sides , use your own judgement , it will not be wrong . :D

rwquilts 07-30-2010 05:55 AM

YOU are the boss of your own fabric...it's entirely up to you! What freedom to have double the fabric to work with, so to speak, huh? Be brave!

uniquelynancy 07-30-2010 06:05 AM

I use the backs of fabrics alot. Especially when I want a lighter tone for contrast in a quilt.

As far as I am concerned, there is no wrong side in fabric; you use whichever side works with your project!

Twilliebee 07-30-2010 06:29 AM

I just use whatever side I like the best. Several times I've gotten home with a chunk of sale fabric that I bought because it was cheap and I could use it up. Then looked at the flip side, fell in love, and gone back for more LOL.
Have fun, there is no wrong side. Just what Michele says about the Quilt Police........

sandpat 07-30-2010 06:39 AM

Its yours....do whatever you like with it and don't feel the need to "explain" to anyone!

lupinlady5 07-30-2010 06:40 AM

I even took a class about tone on tones- there are NO rules. when the back looks as good as the front-use it-all are right, you paid for both sides

steelecg 07-30-2010 06:44 AM

you can use it any way you want - sometimes the back is great for certain effects

daisydell 07-30-2010 06:55 AM

use the side you like the best. You only have to choose which makes you the happiest. Dare to be different

purplefiend 07-30-2010 07:09 AM

Tadpole,
I made a mostly plaid quilt and couldn't find a suitably
light plaid for my background. I ended up using the wrong
side of a red and white printed plaid and it works great and nobody knows unless I tell them. Here's the link to it.

I still have some of my late husband's shirts he got in
Hawaii, and he loved the ones that had been made
deliberately with the back side on top. And these weren't
cheap ones either!! Lovely, with gorgeous muted tones.
i'll get around to cutting into them some day. Still have
not found any like them in thrift stores or yard sales, or
even in regular stores. Probably have to go back to the
islands for more, if they even have them after about 35
years!

Baloonatic 07-30-2010 07:14 AM

Hey didn't you buy BOTH sides of the fabric? Use the one you like! :)

tryitall 07-30-2010 07:30 AM

Hey, there are no set rules in quilting! A lot of times I use the back side a a piece of fabric, maybe because I just like it or because I need something that is not so stark, etc.

retiac 07-30-2010 08:00 AM

no you are not wrong using the back of any material I have often found some that the back looks better or just different than the front and I have used both sides, also this is just a design preference. hope this helps

Mariposa 07-30-2010 08:03 AM

Go for it girl! Use your creative license!! The quilts will be really pretty! :)

jayelee 07-30-2010 08:04 AM

I made a miniature double wedding ring quilt once and didnt know I had used the wrong side until I went to bind it. So I made another one using the right side. Both were wonderful and nobody knew but me

I was told this in one of my early quilt lessons! It is yours and you can do with it what you please!

skavanau 07-30-2010 09:11 AM

I see nothing wrong in using "either" side.

sltiffee 07-30-2010 09:31 AM

It's your fabric. you can do what ever you want with it.

KwiltyKahy 07-30-2010 09:47 AM

Many of the national quilt "experts" use the back of fabrics on a regular basis. And they are not afraid of the quilt police. The recurring theme on this board is "If you like, do it". (Sounds like the 60s)

KwiltyKahy 07-30-2010 09:48 AM

Only one warning. be sure you used the same side throughout.

chrisvdh 07-30-2010 09:49 AM

I have been wondering about quilting from the back of the quilt, because it is hard to see markings on the fabrick, and the back is the same kind of White On White that you described. I think now I am going to actually go ahead and try it. Thanks for the idea.!!!

Playtime7 07-30-2010 10:37 AM

You can definitely use the backside... I sometimes like the backside better myself... :) I heard this on a T.V. program I saw once... just have fun with it.. :)

chamby 07-30-2010 11:08 AM

Never thought about using the back side of white on white or tone on tone. I might have to try this in the future.

matraina 07-30-2010 11:29 AM

That is called white on white. I am making a quilt with it now. On mine, it is difficult to tell which is the front and which is the back. I hope I'm getting them all right; but, if I stick a few backs and right sides both, I'm sure no one will even be able to tell.

lynmh 07-30-2010 11:42 AM

You must be talking about the "Other" right side !!! Use it often. Just "re"-started on my applique blocks and discovered I am using the "other" right side---at the time I put the fabric together there must have been a reason. This way you have twice as much fabric :)

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but I must say what someone once said to me, "you paid for both sides of the fabric, use whatever you like."

Cookie64 07-30-2010 02:53 PM

I can't say any more than the others so use the back side and enjoy it,

Cookie

Quilting Nana 07-30-2010 03:03 PM

I have made several quilts using the back side.
Sometimes I like it better than the front.
One quilt I use both front and back. It looked like two different fabrics.
Take a giant step out of that box. :-)
Then send us pics.

You've got that right!! :D

Sister Sal 07-30-2010 03:23 PM

It makes an interesting design when you can use both sides. They go well together and yet are different.
