Hey - you bought it so it's now your fabric - use it whatever way you want :P

gwanma 07-30-2010 03:54 PM

I'm from Hawaii and we love our Aloha Shirts...but those prints can be pretty wild sometimes. Most of the shirts that the local guys wear are made from material that is sewn wrong side up. gives it a nice muted look. :D

Tudey 07-30-2010 04:11 PM

I've done that before---sometimes the "wrong"side really IS the right side!

tooMuchFabric 07-30-2010 05:26 PM

I am using the backside of a white tone on tone right now in a little mini that I am handpiecing.

Also, I have often used the back as well as the front of a given fabric, if I like the effect of the (usually) duller backside, or if I need some kind of contrast that I don't have in some other fabric.

Incidentally, Kaffe Fassett said on an episode of Simply Quilts (so how long ago does That make it!) that he also does that whenever he wants to.

annette1952 07-30-2010 05:30 PM

Yes, you can use the back for the front! No right or wrong way here! Just have fun!

theresa.redington 07-30-2010 06:02 PM

Go for it! I've heard of quilters using the back side of materials before. SO JUST DO IT!

sewingrams 07-30-2010 06:06 PM

I've done the same thing just making a dress for my grrandaughters. Now days it's fashionable( is that a word)to use the wrong side instead of the right.Go for it.

Ragann63 07-30-2010 06:36 PM

It's your quilt! Use whichever side you prefer.

penski 07-30-2010 07:39 PM

i have used the back side of material plenty of times

Gerbie 07-30-2010 08:08 PM

Nah, I have used the back side of fabric when I like it better. Sometimes the back if prettier than the front. It is still the same fabric, so use it however you want to. No one will know but you and it's your quilt, quilt as you want to.

Annya 07-30-2010 08:13 PM

No! you can use what ever side you like. Some times the color you really is on the back side. So go ahead, I know I would. Happy Sewing :D

Judie 07-30-2010 08:45 PM

When you bought that fabric you paid for the front side and the back side.. Use whichever side you want.. they're both yours!! I've done that many times... sometimes the back side is softer and prettier.

Once I made a Hawaiian shirt for hubby, and a matching dress for me.. (can you tell how long ago that was?) I had the hardest time keeping the back side out.. you know we always put right sides together. That's the biggest problem you have with using the back side!

JCL in FL 07-30-2010 09:13 PM

I've done it several time.

AnnaK 07-30-2010 09:27 PM

I think many people use the wrong side if it gives them the effect they are looking for. It's your fabric and your quilt--do with it what you want. Oh, and show us the results!

IBQUILTIN 07-30-2010 09:58 PM

You paid for both sides of your fabric, use whichever one suits your fancy

amorerm 07-30-2010 10:16 PM

I've seen on TV shows where they reversed the fabric. Not a problem.

quiltin mimi 07-31-2010 02:58 AM

I completely agree. Once you buy a piece of fabric, it belongs to you, and you get to decide which is the "right" side.

newbee 07-31-2010 05:12 AM

A teacher in a quilting class that I attended said to always look at both sides of a fabric--you might like the back better than the front! I have used the back of fabrics in landscape quilts. As others have said here, there are no rules. Enjoy and have fun!

Sewze 07-31-2010 05:21 AM

There are no rules, no quilt police, and no wrong if it's the right side for you.... Go for it.

MISHNJIM 07-31-2010 05:26 AM

(You pay for both sides of the fabric). I Love that saying!!!!

Annz 07-31-2010 06:12 AM

You certainly can use the back side. What ever looks best to you can be done with the white on whites.

pjinflorida 07-31-2010 06:17 AM

Hi,

Don't know if it is right or wrong but I do it all the time. Your fabric sounds exactly like what I got at WalMart and I too loved the back better.

GL and enjoy your quilting

Shorebird 07-31-2010 06:58 AM

Use the side that you like.............

Quilt Mom 07-31-2010 08:05 AM

The comments about Hawaiian shirts reminds me of a prom dress I made for DD. The pattern called for using both side of the fabric - it was cut on bias and formed swirls around the DD down the length of the dress. Wonderful effect! Use the side you like!!!

Jeannie 07-31-2010 11:32 AM

I do it all the time. Sometimes it looks like an entirely different piece of fabric.

I love it.

dyer804 07-31-2010 03:36 PM

Use the side you love. No one else will know.

zz-pd 07-31-2010 05:55 PM

You can use both sides of the fabric, ir=t is made the same, so go for it. God bless.

Dee 07-31-2010 05:59 PM

I have used the wrong side many times, as it was much prettier than the right side. Use the side you like.

Quilter2B 07-31-2010 07:35 PM

Used to be that the "right side" was always on the inside. Now a days its rare to find material packaged this way - maybe thats what you found? But like others said, you paid for both sides so work with what you prefer.

RuthiesRetreat3 07-31-2010 07:36 PM

I LOVE your 'name'; my heart started to pitter-patter when I saw it. This was the nickname I gave my son 39 years ago and he was Tadpole (even at school) until he was 6 or 7. After that, he became Tad and I still call him that. But every time I see the name Tadpole, I think of my darling son.

grammyv 08-01-2010 05:59 AM

use whichever side you like-just rmember if you use the wrong side to consistantly use it that way!:) i once used tone on tone as a background for a scrap quilt that was applique and when i got it all done and was ready to put it on the frame i realized one of the blocks was on the wrong side! oh,well-as my mother would say-you're the only one who knows there's a mistake.i have shown that quilt a qillion times and no one has ever seen the mistake in it.
by the way, many quilter's choose to put a mistake in their quilts.the reasoning is that only god makes things that are perfect....;) just an old quilter.....

Quilting Nana 08-01-2010 06:47 AM

I don't have to purposly put a mistake in my quilts. I have plenty of them there without trying.

I do too, most of the time I don't see them until the quilt is all finished.

Yea I know LOL

JackieG 08-01-2010 11:54 AM

people do that all the time. It's whatever you like best.

GrammaNan 08-01-2010 12:28 PM

Do what you like! No one will know and if they do, so what? I have used the back before to get the impact that I wanted. I am sure it will be beautiful when it is done.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-01-2010 12:35 PM

Use the back if you want. There is nothing that says you can't! I have used the backs of fabrics when they have given a more muted color that I liked better than the front.

Ritas Relics 08-01-2010 02:12 PM

I think it is a great idea to use it. Only you will know.
