Perfect!! What a great idea and you can easily see exactly what you have.

Nanjun 07-22-2010 06:46 AM

QBeth. You really have a stash!! It all looks very nice.

DeniseP 07-22-2010 06:58 AM

Leave it to a quilter to find the perfect way to organize. I have a big problem with organization: it doesn't happen. When I do clean it just gets messed up again. I can't sew if the sewing room is clean. I need the chaos!

What a perfect way to store your fabrics--and btw I LOVE your stash!!!

When I saw his empty, I screwed up my courage, dreading what the cost might be, and asked if they were for sale??

Yes! They were for sale and at very reasonable prices. Long story short, I have space for only one in my sewing room (although I was tempted to buy the second unit and re-purpose it) so bought only one. _:thumbup: _

Sorry the picture is a bit blurry (hate this camera!). Is this cabinet to die for or what?!! When the fabric is folded using the ruler method, it fits perfectly. At this point, about half of it is folded correctly. The shelving unit to the right (which will be moved shortly) is what I was using but things kept toppling over and, because the shelves are deep, I kept putting other things in front of the fabric which completely defeated being able to see it at a glance. _ :-( _

So, what do you think of my solution??

In all that fabric, not one veggie pattern until you sent me some! Just sent you a PM.

For everyone asking about dimensions.... I'm in work right now so don't have the cabinet in front of me. If you look at the picture of the cabinet, there are seven slots which I'm guessing are 7-8" wide based on the fact that I used a 5" wide ruler to fold the fabric and, 7 x 8" = 56" or about five feet wide. I believe it's just over six feet tall.

This particular cabinet can be broken into three pieces: the top, pull-out shelf, and bottom. It's heavy guage so it took all of my and Bob's strength to get the top and bottom pieces upstairs to my sewing room. The pieces screw together which makes the unit very sturdy.

As I said, the doctor still has another cabinet which, if I remember correctly, is about the same width but a little shorter. That one has dividers that can be repositioned on the shelves.

This was an opportunity that fell into my lap. But, I have to believe there'll be other similar cabinets some where out there. Good luck on your hunt!

Chaos? I have no clue what you mean!

What I didn't show you is what the rest of my sewing room looks like right now. I decided to re-organize everything so, starting at the wall with the stash, I pushed everything else to the other end. It's an unbelievable mess right now, as you can see below. Even I had to laugh when I looked at the pictures again! :) :)

Yes, there is a sewing machine somewhere!

Oops, pushed the button twice.

Very happy for you. Great idea.

QBeth - Lucky You! Love your new storage cabinet! Now on to the really important stuff - your STASH! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! I agree totally with you about how we feel about our stash of fabric - love to look at it and touch it! Thanks for sharing!

Joanie2 07-22-2010 07:42 AM

Great Idea! Love the way you have it organized and although we can't see the fabric prints I can tell you have some nice colors. It's always nice when someone comes up with a great idea and shares it. Motivates others to think how they can store their fabrics.

aneternalpoet 07-22-2010 07:55 AM

Haha, you made me a very happy camper, but my construction son thinks I am nuts! But, bless his ever-buildin' heart, he just said he would build me one to fit my wall space if I feed him meals for a yearl or two! haha.. YEA for you, my new inspiring friend!

JudeWill 07-22-2010 08:07 AM

Awesome! What a fabulous idea!

klgreene 07-22-2010 08:12 AM

I am very impressed and jealous of all your fabric. I have my fabrics all over the place, and just is not real convenient. I will keep this in mind.

sylslight 07-22-2010 08:42 AM

I knew I had a lot of fabric of certain colors (I've been saving for a blue & yellow quilt) but didn't know I had quite SO much! And, yes, the cabinet is all but full which tells me to stop buying and start sewing. It's just so tempting to buy new fabric as it comes in, isn't it?!

Pattiannie 07-22-2010 09:29 AM

WOW, what a great storage solution. I've been searching for book cases that would assist me with being more organized and visible so I can use the collection I have. No one seems to be selling items like you have. If you hear of them again, please let me know. If it's close I'd love to have something like yours. PS. My hubby is getting really tired of looking as my "mess" in the sewing room/computer room.

If anyone else has suggestions feel free to share their ideas with me. Thanks all. :)

Beebee 07-22-2010 09:56 AM

Wow what a find!! Really makes you feel good when that happens. I was feeling guilty about my stash until I viewed yours. Now I have to go shopping in ME again this week/end for my fabric deals 'cause I no long am on a guilt trip.

baglady65 07-22-2010 10:12 AM

I love it! I have no space for that in my sewing room wish I did!

great aunt jacqui 07-22-2010 12:20 PM

Tweety2911 07-22-2010 12:25 PM

Oh how clever. Great job, great stash.

Can you explain what "folding using the ruler method" means? My husband is planning to build me shelves in my closet, and I would like to know the dimensions of each of your "cubicles". What size are your folded fabrics?

I'll try to remember to measure the cabinet tonight, when I get home. The fabric folding method has been talked about on the Board before and I'd be hard pressed to explain it better than they did so, please, use the Search feature at the top to look for "folding fabric." Basically, you wrap the fabric around a 5" or 6" ruler so everything comes out a uniform width.

Irishlady 07-22-2010 01:51 PM

Forget about the storage unit, I'm drooling over all that gorgeous fabric you have.

pgthom 07-22-2010 01:52 PM

I too had way more fabric than even I realized. Until I moved, and had to unbag, sort and pack it all. I have set aside quite a lot that I can live without, and have tried to better organize what I did keep. I also sew garments and other items beside quilts, so I sort by fabric type rather than color family.
Love the repurposing of the medical record racks. I formerly worked in a large medical practice. Wish I had thought of that when they went to electronic medical records.
Love your pics!

Pretty creative, I think. You know what they say "Takes a woman-----."

Luv Quilts and Cats 07-22-2010 03:13 PM

What a great idea! I never would have thought of that. I bet you can get some good prices on shelving like that at an office surplus store.

Ann L 07-22-2010 03:20 PM

Wish mine looked as neat as yours. Great idea.

jals loves to quilt 07-22-2010 03:41 PM

I did a similar thing some years back. I bought 1 of the drawer units for hanging folders at a salvage yard. My son used it for his dresser in his room and took it off to college. the drawers were deep, the walls were metal for magnets and stuff, and the best thing was that you had to completely close one drawer before opening another. Hence his room stayed neat. I got 2 more but these had a shelf on the top and then 4 drawers. I put a different color fabric in each and stacked them so that I could see each fabric at a glance. Works great!
