Having had two foot surgeries, my foot doctor and I are well acquainted. Several month ago, I noticed that he'd emptied two "filing" units that were used to store medical folders (his office is going electronic). Many times, in many offices, I have coveted / yearned for / craved / ... one of these units!! When I saw his empty, I screwed up my courage, dreading what the cost might be, and asked if they were for sale??

Yes! They were for sale and at very reasonable prices. Long story short, I have space for only one in my sewing room (although I was tempted to buy the second unit and re-purpose it) so bought only one. _:thumbup: _

Sorry the picture is a bit blurry (hate this camera!). Is this cabinet to die for or what?!! When the fabric is folded using the ruler method, it fits perfectly. At this point, about half of it is folded correctly. The shelving unit to the right (which will be moved shortly) is what I was using but things kept toppling over and, because the shelves are deep, I kept putting other things in front of the fabric which completely defeated being able to see it at a glance. _ :-( _

So, what do you think of my solution??

New system

Old system - still have some cleanup to do

dkabasketlady 07-20-2010 06:27 AM

WOW!! I would have never thought of that kind of storage cabinet! I think I would have bought the other one too!!! I'd have found the room somewhere for it! A PERFECT solution for storing your fabrics!!

Thanks! I can't tell you how pleased I am with this system. It actually gave me the urge to clean-up my sewing room which has been a disaster for toooooo long!

As you can see, I'm just about out of room so I really wish I had room for the other cabinet. But, no can do.

One thing this has done is force me to look at just how much fabric I do have. Too much was in bags or elsewhere. I don't over spend but have been collecting for a lot of years. What's the saying..??.. out of sight, out of mind?!

cjomomma 07-20-2010 06:30 AM

That is a fabulous idea. If I ever get a sewing room I am gonna have to remember this idea. Thanks for sharing.

wichypoo 07-20-2010 06:31 AM

hhhmmm, wonder how heavy it'd be to put on large casters so you could double stack them and move them around when you need fabric...

Grama Lehr 07-20-2010 06:33 AM

Awesome!! What a creative inspiration!

Chele 07-20-2010 06:34 AM

It's gorgeous! My kind of eye candy! I recently got my stash out of tubs and onto shelving. It really makes it so much easier to see what you have and create more. You're going to have so much fun!

CarrieAnne 07-20-2010 06:34 AM

WOw, that is a great idea!

My blessing have been abundant, praise God. One is I have a job where I could afford a house (small but comfortable) with several small bedrooms, one of which is my sewing room. There are times I'm afraid I have the hoarding gene but then I remember that, at the of 59, I've collected a lot of stuff that doesn't get used very fast and, that I'm good at preserving. Maybe that gene is really a thrifty Yankee gene?? :)

DebraK 07-20-2010 06:36 AM

enviable ;-)

eparys 07-20-2010 06:36 AM

What a great find and looks great as well! I envy you!

montanablu 07-20-2010 06:38 AM

WOW!! I thought I had a stash, but yours is to die for!! Just showed DH your pics & he's decided I'm not so 'bad' after all! lol
You scored a big one w/this storage system - holds lots & looks awesome! Nice going!

Double stack them?? How high are YOUR ceilings?!! _ :) __ Now I'm envious!

If I thought I could fit that other cabinet in the house, it would have come home with me, too! As it is, this one is in front of the closet; those silicon sliders under it allow access. Would you believe I only paid $175 for this and, if I'd bought the two of them, it would have been $300 for the pair?!! I almost fell out of the chair!

Thank goodness both my boyfriend and I are fairly strong! This thing weighs a ton!! Well made, sturdy. What you can't see is a shelf that pulls out about halfway down; guess it's so doctor's can write in the medical record before storing.

littlehud 07-20-2010 06:40 AM

Wow, that is the perfect place to put your fabric. What a great idea on your part. And to be able to get it at a good price.....even better.

Candace 07-20-2010 07:32 AM

Great idea.

HeatherQuilts 07-20-2010 07:34 AM

Awesome!!

Lady Shivesa 07-20-2010 07:38 AM

That is so awesome!! I love how it's arranged by color, not only does it look easier to find what you want - but it looks gorgeous all by itself. :)

msariano 07-20-2010 08:08 AM

How clever of you to see the potential in those filing cabinets! I'd love to have all of my fabric stored just the way you have it but my sewing room is just too small. Loved the pictures.

mrsdralshhadeh 07-20-2010 08:49 AM

can I come shoppping in your fabric???!!!! looks perfect!!!

You'll have to beat my sister to it... she thinks my house is the local Wally World! _ :) _

nativetexan 07-20-2010 08:52 AM

Oh that's wonderful. what a wonderful way to be organized. I have plastic drawers and containers. some of which will go to charity soon with fabric inside. quilting charity that is.

What a great shelf!! So glad that you were able to get it from them at a reasonable price!!!

tolepainter54 07-20-2010 09:22 AM

What a find! Glad you asked if they were for sale. I too, would like to shop in your stash.

dyer804 07-20-2010 09:25 AM

Wow! It looks just like a quilt shop.

cjtinkle 07-20-2010 09:26 AM

Ooooh, definitely drool worthy... nice score!

thequilteddove 07-20-2010 09:27 AM

Those medical record thingies are absolutely purfect!!! Great idea!

QBeth 07-20-2010 09:34 AM

Must warn all of you .... my commando kitties defend my stash against all!!

:-)

mrs. fitz 07-20-2010 09:40 AM

A genius solution - congratulations on this fabulous acquisition. If the second one is still for sale think seriously about getting it and sticking it ANYWHERE until you can find the right place for it. It looks like a quilt shop, enjoy the convenience.

Charleen DiSante 07-20-2010 09:41 AM

Love it!! So glad you got the courage to ask! Have fun getting the rest organized.

FancyFoot 07-20-2010 09:58 AM
