What a beautiful 'find'. I also think from the 30's. I have a butterfly quilt w/BF's exactly like those I bought in an yard sale that is from the 30's. It has yellow sashing between the blocks & REALLY heavy batting. Whoever made it, made it for warmth - but is still pretty.
Looking forward to see pics of the finished product. |
I think the 30's. They are gorgeous. Great find!
Looks like to me they are from the 30's and 40's. Thats my guess, they sure are beautiful, I can't wait to see the finished quilt made with them.
My guess is the 30's to 40's fabrics...what a great find!!!
I have seen them before, not sure where...I think 1930-40
I have some fabric scraps from the 30's and 40's that I got from my grandmother years ago. It is not enough to make a quilt but I have some more fabric from my mother from the 50s and thought it be nice to sew a quilt with both fabrics in rememberance of both of them.

Beautiful! Great find ;-)

My mother made a quilt like this in the 50's-60's, but hard telling how long she'd had the fabric or kit or whatever she had to make this quilt - and yes, it was beautiful when it was done - she hand appliqued all the butterflies onto the blocks and then sewing with the machine - but the quilt top together; but she always tied her quilts - using nice pretty color yarns; the little "tails" she left with the ties, looked like baby butterflies to me when I saw the quilt - so pretty, and inviting; but being white background became a Sunday only quilt on the bed and no one ever laid on it to get it dirty... not sure what happened to it as years went on - wish I knew!
No idea on the year. but, I have to say those are beautiful.Great find ! I can't wait to see what you do with them!
without actually seeing, touching, could be 1990's...they look like 30's, but you have to realize that reproductions have been around for a while!
and just because the fabric is old, does not mean the blocks are! I making a dresden plate right now using True vintage fabrics, on vintage muslin, by hand...it will appear to be a real vintage quilt when finished! However it was made between 2005 and ??? so one just never really knows... |

You know, I am not sure, but I really like them...maybe from the 30's. Hope you post a pic when you complete the top!!
Wow! Those are pretty! Lucky you!
I believe it is the 30's. I have seen that pattern and it said the 30's.
Those will make such a pretty quilt. Love 'em.

In 1948 at the age of 9 I had leg surgery and could not walk all summer. My Mom taught me how to make this exact butterfly pattern! Some of the prints shown are also what I used. She worked in Eureka Print Dye works and brought home small pieces.
The quilt never got quilted- just blocks sewn together and used for a "beach blanket". In 1978 my DH took the kids swimming when I was in the hospital. It began to rain so they left for home leaving the quilt on the beach. I often wonder if the person finding it appreciated all the hand work I had done as a child. |
the prints look too pretty to be vintage. if you take a close look at vintage, the color combinations are usually more ODD than not. also, the spacing is more modern.
the fabric in that photo looks too nice! see how important your labels are on your finished work??? |
They look like the fabric in a Alphbet quilt my grandmother made for me in 1929
I believe somewhere in the woods of the 40's. My grandmother had a few of those butterfly print, until she made her own
30's or 40's - Kind of look like feed sack material.

I'd guess 1930's from what I've gotten from my grandmother and my mom
Ohhh ....don't know but I like.
The person who put all the work into those butterflies would be happy to know they are finally going to be a quilt! Remember, these were probably made without die cutters, etc...

Hart Cottage Quilts has some good information about fabrics from the 30s.

They mostly look like 20-s and 30s. Butterflies were a popular motif then too
What a coincidence. I have some of the identical butterfly patterned blocks from an auction and 2 have the very same fabric as yours. They're on my to-do list for fall. Hope you enjoy yours, too!

I say 40's but.....
I had clothes made from 2 of thoser fabrics so that would be the 50's
since the bodies and the wings are all made from one continuos piece of fabric, i'd say repro. they come out of asia and you can find them on ebay as sets. they're very nice anyway. and you really can't beat the price for handwork.
also, the white is thinner than the white fabrics i've seen from the 30's into the 40's. i think these are supposed to look like the 30's and they do. if you trim them down to the smallest size, match all the black handstitching on the bodies and sash them, you'll have a great quilt, either for a wall or for a very special baby. edit: the butterflies appear to be die-cut. i am an authority on butterflies, after all. ROFL    |
I would guess the 30s. Butterflys were popular and the fabric look like feed sack.
I do not think they are feedsacks. A little later period maybe, 50's/60's?
Look like the 30's.

My grandmother had a similar quilt - the butterflies outlined with a black blanket stitch. So charming! :) |
