I say, pick a pile and start at the top. Set a timer for 1 hour, this way you can get a little done at a time.
Go in several times a day, you can have it done within a week. Make sure you have shelves ready to put the organized fabric on.

Delta 03-02-2012 06:25 AM

Fold each piece nice and neet pile them per color then store. you can store by yardage or color. I work at Joanns part time and I fold the fabric in 1/2 long ways then in 1/2 again then fold sideways a couple times that works wonderful. good luck to ya. We all know the pain.

lillybeck 03-02-2012 06:33 AM

I am abit far away but it is a great deal for someone.

pojo 03-02-2012 06:43 AM

You have a wonderful selection of fabrics so it is time to give them their due! Set up the ironing board, put on a movie, and press as much as you have space to lay flat. Then take the iron off the ironing board and using the 6-6.5" wide rulers start folding on the iron board (fabric drapes nicely and stays so pretty). Start making stacks according to color, Civil War,
1930s, batik, blenders, however you want to organize it. It will truly inspire you but remember it may take a week to do it.
So many great ideas here on the board!

LoriMcc 03-02-2012 07:12 AM

I have a similar situation... Ugh!

Scakes 03-02-2012 07:17 AM

Will try this one more time. Keeps saying the QB is not responding and will not post my message.

Wish I was closer! I'd be glad to help. It's always more fun working on someone else's stash.

I've been doing a lot of sorting, destashing, rearranging, reorganizing, downsizing in my sewing room. I have found starting with 15 or 20 minute sessions works well. If I am on a roll and want to keep going, then I just work until I am ready to quit. Really helped and after you get some of it done, the rest gets easier.

Mad Mimm 03-02-2012 07:18 AM

Wish I could help, but I'm on the opposite coast! :) Good luck!

sewbizgirl 03-02-2012 07:19 AM

Get some comic book boards and start! You take the normal folded yardage and fold it once more, lengthwise. Then it's the perfect width to wrap around a comic book board.

You will be so glad when you have it all organized, easy to pull fabrics for a quilt.

quiltingnonie 03-02-2012 07:31 AM

What really inspired me to get my fabric organized was purchasing the fabric boards. It really helps. I also purchased two shoe cabinet/storage units w/25 slots in each. I rolled up the smaller pieces of fabric for those slots, and have them sorted by colors. A little bit of time each day....my girlfriend used to tell me "You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time!" LOL

cherrio 03-02-2012 07:32 AM

would gladly help you but I live too far away . . .

Yosamitesa 03-02-2012 07:36 AM

If I was closer, I'd be there in a flash. :)

catmcclure 03-02-2012 07:39 AM

That's all you've got to fold??? I have several times that much in boxes, stacks, drawers (about 300 yards).

Jingle 03-02-2012 07:43 AM

I did this several years ago and folded mine with my ruler. Put on shelves into my 48x72" cabinet with doors. Looks very neat and easy to choose fabrics. I had the stacks in my dinig room and didn't like the look, so I just kept at it until I was done. It took me all week after work and finished it up on the weekend. When I buy more, I wash and dry, fold and stack with the others. I have mostly 4yd pieces or larger. Smaller pieces are easier and faster.

If I just lived closer, in the same country even! Sorry, I truly wish that I could help you with that! Honestly I offered to go help my mother in law, however we don't live close either!

dglvr 03-02-2012 08:03 AM

Number 1. I live too far away; Number 2. I have enough of my own to organize; and Number 3. I really hate to organize, I'd rather do something with the fabric like sew.
But that being said, I'd love to come and sit with you and talk about what you could do with all the fabric and ooh and aah over it!

huntannette 03-02-2012 08:47 AM

600 square feet ....wow that`s almost the size of my house...ha ha ha......i`m sure you can find room....

That is a really good idea! I try to come down and do some but I get overwhelmed when I look at it.

This is only what is on the table and does not count for the two shelving units already done and the numerous drawers done. My sewing space is about 600 square feet or so. And only a portion is any where near being organized

Thank you all so much. I sure hope I can get it done soon.

I'm with you, Jen. I have at least 2 rooms that need moving and setting up.

First start sorting by theme, then color after that you can start folding and buy a cabinet with shelves, so you have a place to store it all. Learn to use labels on those shelves. I live in Idaho, so can not help. Good luck.

I rang your doorbell but you never answered,,,hummmmmmmmm ??????

DonnaR 03-02-2012 11:36 AM

I wish I lived closer. I helped a friend with her stash and we had so much fun. I enjoy the organizing. Good Luck.

sewNso 03-02-2012 12:13 PM

an hour at a time, like i did, got it done last winter.

pacquilter 03-02-2012 12:24 PM

Too bad we can't all come help you..it's so fun rifling through other people's fabric instead of your own!

wildyard 03-02-2012 02:38 PM

Here is my plan to help you! Since I am too far to come over, just take all those pinks and yellows, shove them in a box and ship them to me. I will fold them up nice and stick them on my shelves.
Next take all the reds and purples, follow the same plan as before. Repeat with greens and blues.
There you go all cleaned up and in only 3 days!!! And you don't even have to pay me for helping. Is that great or what? LOL Huggggggggs and big smilesssssss!

After folding 800+ pcs. I know what you're dealing with. I did what another member suggested; I did 15 min at a time, one bin at a time and used my 6x24 ruler. It's really amazing how little space all my fabric now takes up. I have one shelf for solids and one for prints. Now I can see at a glance where each fabric is and how much I have. Best of all though is that I'm inspired just by walking into my sewing room. Seeing the fabric helps get me going on what I can make. To help me here I started an inspiration notebook for future reference. All the bins that held fabric now hold projects. I'm forever grateful to the QB for the tip on fabric folding tutorials. They made a big difference in my world.

There's been a lot of offers .... including some that are somewhat in your area.
I hope that you are accepting some of these Ladies offers ... meet and make some new friends and have a folding and organizing party! :)
