That's why I am letting all of my subscriptions lapse. Sometimes I look at some in the store and if something jumps out at me I buy it. More times than not, I end up passing the mag to the girls at work.

I go to Barnes and Noble, get a cup of coffee, gather a bunch on quilt magazines and enjoy the hour! I do this a lot when it is dark and rainy.
Yes - I'm getting bored with them. This year I have decided to let all of my subscriptions except for The Quilter's Magazine (my favorite) lapse. I figure I can buy the ones I find something of interest in at JoAnn's or Barnes and Noble.
I too am bored with the magazines. I feel like they are more of an advertising agent than anything else. I don't like a lot of the fabric choices used and I let my subscriptions run out too.
there's so much available to us online..magazines no longer compare
I feel the same way. I think it's the quality of the publication. I still enjoy my QNMs and Miniature Quilts from the 1990's.

yep, they have been repeats, and overruns of the same EQ established quilts for years now....Even quilter's newsletter is now full of rubbish....I would love it to go back to being a NEWSletter...full of information about the industry, shows, etc....I quit taking all but 2 and they are ending this year..finally...

...that's exactly why I am letting all my subscriptions run their course......same ole, same ole.... Glad you noted this - I thought it was just me :-)

There are too many free sites on the net, and many beautiful quilts on this site to order magazines.
Yep. When renews have come due, I have not renewed. They need to make them available online. Add quilts that are not 100"s of dollars to make. Make them fun and simple. Quilters with experinece can add or take away steps to make them theirs.
I agree. I stopped taking any magazines a couple of years ago. Just too much on the web that's free. I still like to look through them but go to my stash that's grown for years! Also check some out at the library
i agree ,that is why i have cancelled most of them
I've taken Quilter's Newsletter for years. A couple of years ago I got a notice stating they were going to publish bi-monthly instead of monthly because of popular demand. How stupid do they think we are?

I have Quilters World also and love it. Best thing is that when e-patterns on line has a new quilt design, it's usually in a back issue of Quilters World. If you get the magazine, you can download the e-pattern for free. Love it.
I completely agree! Tired of seeing the same colors, same blocks and same tutorials. BTW----bought Quilt Almanac yesterday and it was $9.95 at the register. No more of those for me!!!! I'll pay that much for something really different but it wasn't....
Yep, I’ve cancelled all mine too. EXCEPT for one and it’s online. Actually, I’m pretty impressed with it. It is new, completely online and just loaded with usable and printable free patterns, full-size templates where applicable, etc. They’re about to release their second issue.
Here’s the best part: A one-year subscription (monthly – 12 issues, maybe 13) is only $14 or thereabouts. You can print what you want, save the entire magazine (PDF) to your computer and/or DVD, etc. They also speak to quilters at all levels, in fact, showing a “key” to quickly determine the skills likely need to do each pattern. Mostly, I love that you will likely find at least one pattern per month that you like and it will have ended up only costing you a buck. If you find more than one . . . well, you get the idea. I don’t have any connection to them, and share just because I think it’s such a good deal. Go to: www.quiltpatternmagazine.com (I don't know why the link didn't go active, but it's pretty easy to remember for just typing it in the address line.) |
Glad that I am not the only one thinking the same - how different can one get on the same patterns? Besides, these designers receive all that fabric from the mfg. so of course they can create such coordinated quilts (that is if you can see the blocks underneath all that quilting!) Did you ever try to find THOSE fabrics in your LQS? They may carry two or three - never the whole line.
I agree. Also, if you see a neat pattern, you need to buy probably about 3 issues to get the full pattern. The only subscription I have is a digital QuiltersWorld.
I decided after a year of two subscribtions that I had more quilt patterns than I ever will need. I just stopped getting them.
I also have the digital Quilt World which is great because you can go into the archives and get even more articles and patterns. The computer has certainly enriched our lives but sadly has played havoc with business and jobs.
yes. seems as though they are the same ideas mag after mag. I like the internet and quilting boards such as this better.

(I doubt they do, but they seem to all follow the same ideas.) |
I've let all my subscriptions lapse.
oh yes, and also tired of the ones that send you a notice, 6 months into the subscription, saying payment is due and your subscription is about to end...like the one I just got from Quiltmaker. Of course, there was no phone number to call, so I wrote them a little note and will mail it back to them. 6 months early, saying my subscription will end Jan 30, if I don't renew. My check is dated July, 2010. For 1 year subs.
I looked through a magazine yesterday that didn't really turn me on. It goes in spurts.
Also, I am very spoiled by all the great things I have found through QB! I have a complete library on my computer. It would be safe to say that I don't really need to find anything else. I don't have enough years in two lifetimes to do them all! LOL |
I'm thinking that I will try Fabric Trends, now that Mark Lipinski is editor. And I may try online Quilters World. Where is there room to store these magazines?! We have an exchange table at our Guild so I can often read magazines I rarely buy.
However, even if you use just one pattern, it is still cheaper than buying a single pattern. I agree that the magazines now seem to serve the manufacturers needs rather than quilters'. |

I go to the library and take the mags out.
Yep got my MCcalls yesterday.nothing in it of interest and very boring read. And notice not near as many pages in any of them anymore.
The reason they all look the same could very well be because many are owned by the same publisher, which also owns Keepsake Quilting. I would like to see some things that aren't super easy or aren't super difficult.
same here , i wait and wait for the magazine and then its a let down , disappointed
I have dropped all my subscriptions except Quiltmaker. I don't think I will even renew it next time.
glad so many agree...I really don't know what they can come up with new..I usually take a few in every month for guild and put them on the table. Free for the taking and please don't bring them back LOL...I give alot to my DD and tell her if I have torn out a pattern. I have a notebook full of potentials too. Right now I am just working on UFO's and am determined NO new stuff til the pile goes down.
I agree...they seem to be repeating the patterns over and over just in different color ways.
