I've had several subscriptions to different magazines and let them all lapse. Then I got one from Quilter's Home that I enjoyed for a while but it's not holding my interest much any more. I guess because I can find almost anything I need on-line if I'm willing to look long enough. I do look at what our library offers when I go there.

neonparrot 01-30-2011 09:52 AM

I just looked into quilters world, as mentioned above. That's a really pretty heart quilt on its front cover.

Derla 01-30-2011 09:57 AM

I also let my subscriptions lapse - I have too long a list already of quilts I want to make. If I want to get better ideas on how to do it right, I will either come here or to YouTube. I may be old, but I still have an awfully lot to learn.

Oh I agree....I've stopped renewing my subscriptions.

sewmom 01-30-2011 10:02 AM

i've been getting FandP LOQ for several years. i used to look thru them and ohh and ahh. or "this one I'm gonna make" I don't seem to be ding that anymore. Letting it lapse. i was checking out past mags. from the library til they said I didn't return one and are now charging me $16 to replace it. I think not!! so i can't check anything out anymore w/my card. I really have enough books, patterns and inspiration/links from here to keep me busy til the Lord calls me home. That said-I'm making sure when I go to the quilt show this spring that i have the time and money to look thru the mags. and books for sale.

Pickle 01-30-2011 10:03 AM

I think they are too full of advertisements. I do not order any more, especially since I joined the board, I have enough trouble writing down all the names of the quilts people share and trying to find those patterns.LOL Pickle

Iamquilter 01-30-2011 10:04 AM

I've also let all my subscriptions lapse. Most magazines don't have a quilt in it that I like. I have so many books that I would have to live to be 200 to make one quilt from every book.

Tropical 01-30-2011 10:08 AM

When I first got interested in quilting a couple of years ago, I bought any and all mags. I could find. My DH was getting tired of waiting patiently while I hunted them out. Never said anything though. Now I don't even look at them often in the stores. I'll finish my F&P subscription and not renew. I do like Quilting Arts and Fabric Trend but they are expensive and I like to spend my money on fabric and tools.

misoop 01-30-2011 10:10 AM

think I'll let mine subscriptions run out and use the money to buy the Austrailian magazine.....Love it!!!

MamaYitu 01-30-2011 10:17 AM

I have let my subscriptions run out for that reason. I realize I get just as many ideas from just going on this Quilting Board as I do from the magazine and a whole lot cheaper!

What I did this year was to buy a digital subscription to this one: http://www.quiltersworld.com/ it's great as I don't feel guilty by throwing half a Brazilian tree forest away, and it's reasonably priced.

Great idea. One of many I've got from this fabulous forum.

judykay 01-30-2011 10:31 AM

Completley agree, did not renew any of them, prices have gotten too high, more advertising & nothing that I want to make so I feel it is a waste of money and trees.

cosyquilter 01-30-2011 10:44 AM

I haunt the 2nd hand stores and thrift shops, hang out here a lot, search for specific patterns on line. Felt I might miss something because I'd rather use my limited funds for fabric. So, you all have convinced me I really don't need a subscription.

Most mags, regardless of genre really are more an advertising vehicle than anything else. Check it out: most mags are 2/3-3/4 adverts, AND, the editorial content is driven by the advertisers. For example, the mags that advertise cigarettes will not print articles that talk about the dangers of smoking. This is industry wide, just the way it is. So, of course the articles are going to tout a line of fabric, an expensive new tool, etc. It's all about selling.

wendiq 01-30-2011 10:49 AM

When I was new to quilting, I devoured every mag I could get my hands on and saved a ton of patterns. (Haven't made but one or two). Now that I am in my "old"years of quilting, I find them less interesting and fill my need for new ideas from the wonderful blogs here in the internet. I am not renewing any of my mag subscriptions anymore.

Tennessee Suzi 01-30-2011 10:50 AM

It seems the quilts are all dark anymore. And the ads drive me crazy. I stop a lot of subscriptions because of all the ads. I know the mag needs the ads but How many do they need?

theifner 01-30-2011 10:51 AM

yes and I think they are too expensive

Tennessee Suzi 01-30-2011 10:53 AM

Amen!

Nanamoms 01-30-2011 11:04 AM

I think a lot of the print media is losing out to the internet. I don't subscribe to any quilt magazines but I have one regular mag that I receive. I will flip thru it when I comes and then it goes in a stack which I eventually donate.

Luv Quilts and Cats 01-30-2011 11:06 AM

I have only kept two going, Quilter's World and Quilt Maker. Those two seem to have the most projects that I would do.

Diecy 01-30-2011 11:26 AM

I'm about over magazines. I have a gift subscription to McCall's Quilting and the issue I just received does nothing for me as many of the magazines are about the same. Nothing knew or inovative. Rather spend money on the fabric with the money saved from not buying magazines.

hikingquilter 01-30-2011 11:40 AM

I used to get 4 mags, now I only subscribe to one. They are repetitive. I may browse through them in the fabric store or book store, but I will only buy if I see something I think I may really want to try. They are too expensive, too.

marthahelen 01-30-2011 11:41 AM

I do the same thing and have 3 binders full of patterns. I calculated that I'll have to live to be 132 to finish all of those projects. Now I go to the thrift store and if there is a magazine I haven't read, I buy it for .25.

I,m letting all my subscriptions lapse, too. Got McCalls 2 days ago and as usual, nothing of interest in it. Will keep Quiltmaker as long as Bonnie Hunter is there. When she is gone, so am I.

crankygran 01-30-2011 12:09 PM

I think the main reason I am getting bored is the ugly fabrics(IMO) they are using. I am so tired of the colors!

Nonna2 01-30-2011 12:12 PM

I, too, have stopped all quilting magazines for reasons already posted. I also get upset when they offer the 2 for 1 & wish they would reduce the price of my own subscription.

MsDesigns 01-30-2011 12:28 PM

Wow! I did not know there were so many that felt the same way I do! I am so happy I am not alone.

I heard about this discussion and ran over to see what it was all about.

In the past few years, I too have become greatly disappointed in the decrease of creative, fun projects in magazines because of their need to make space for more advertising. Equally as disappointing is the fact that pattern instructions are kept to such a severe minimum due to resulting space limitations.

This inspired me to create a new magazine that will provide quilters with more patterns, more quilting articles, and more value for their money. "The Quilt Pattern Magazine" is unique in that it is totally online.

If you would like to investigate something totally different in the magazine world, I invite you to visit "The Quilt Pattern Magazine" at http://www.quiltpatternmagazine.com. You can view the contents of our first two issues.

This is a quilting magazine designed by a quilter for quilters. We are not a big company, but a small group of quilters that want to provide more to the quilting community. 8o)

I'd agree except that I just went through my latest copy of McCall's Quilting and there isn't one project in there that I don't want to do! This is one magazine I look forward to and this issue sure didn't disappoint.

Maribeth 01-30-2011 12:33 PM

I, also, keep seeing the same thing over and over again. I am letting all of my subscriptions expire.

Iamquilter 01-30-2011 12:38 PM

Maybe what we need to do since so many on here let their sub. expire is the next time we get a notice from the magazines is to write them and tell them why we are not renewing our subscription. Maybe they will change .

sewbigd2858 01-30-2011 12:38 PM

I found a bunch of 2001 thru now for .50 & 1.50 At the Goodwill store. I looked at Fabric Trend Sat. I liked it but I ended up buying McCall Quilting.

Mumzbear 01-30-2011 12:43 PM

I have stopped getting mine. There are so many free downloads for beautiful quilts and the quilting board is so great to keep us informed on neat things. I look at them on the racks and if one is really interesting, I will just buy one now and then.

tutty 01-30-2011 12:47 PM

I go to the library sale room and buy up the mags and books ! I did let my subscriptions go too till I was a ble to get 2 yr for the price of 1 but I still only got the 2 I'm most interested in ! Was surprised others felt this way too ! AND I'm still pretty new to this !!!!

maryhopkins39 01-30-2011 12:52 PM

I always look forward to getting Quiltmaker in the mail, but am cutting down on my subscriptions...I had 6 at one time! too many back issues-I will never use them all!

greaterexp 01-30-2011 12:57 PM

I was so excited when I got back into quilting. I used to love to look at quilting magazines, and I bought up several new ones. They all look the same - same fabric combinations, colors, patterns. I won't be buying any more either.

colleen1978 01-30-2011 01:27 PM

I used to have several subscriptions and then picked up even more if something on the cover struck me as interesting...I've dropped all of them! All of you are right...same patterns in different colors. I went through all my old magazines, tore out the patterns and articles I like and organized them into binders according to technique. I think I must have enough patterns that I want to make to last me three lifetimes...so I really don't need doubles or re-runs that are in the magazines! I really am trying to justify this cut from my hobby budget...sounds good doesn't it???

polly13 01-30-2011 01:58 PM

Funny you should bring up this topic. I did not renew my F&P subscription. They keep trying to entice me with deals. They are mostly ads anymore.

Bergereink 01-30-2011 02:00 PM

I still love them. I just can;t afford them so a friend passes hers on to me. Anything quilt is good with me.

capsew 01-30-2011 02:04 PM

Like so many others, I go to B & N and look at quilting mags thinking maybe I'll find a good one to buy. HA! None at all in months; thinking the same as I've been reading here. Too expensive, too. The current issue of Stitches looks pretty good this time, for a change (to my likes); also too $$.

Australian quilt mags look good to me and too $$. And, I like some of Quiltmania - $20 @ B & N. So, I wonder - is it, perhaps, that the grass looks greener on the other side? (hehehe) It does seem the Aussies are getting creative quality in their quilt mags.

The quilty blogs have a lot of very creative and sharing people and fun to find.

The QB seems to keep me most up-to-date and educated from wonderful sharing and giving people. As well, I enjoy getting a different perspective and point-of-view from my limited thinking. I'm thankful for all of you.

polly13 01-30-2011 02:12 PM

Do you ever find that just when you're going to stop renewing a subscription they have a beautiful quilt on the cover that you just HAVE to make, and then the future copies have nothing you are interested in?
