Another thing that bothers me about today's quilt magazines is the quilts they show are more toward beginners & have the "city" look to them. I still like traditional done in new ways. Maybe we've seen it all by now. And like many others on here I really prefer to brouse on-line. Also agree with quiltingaddictUK bout Quilter's world. I just recently learned that you don't have to take the subscription just to get the digital.
I am glad I did not renew them. lots of advertisements and the same ones all the time.
I have to agree, they are all same....boring.
I wish there was one like Cusine they have no advertisers at all.
I have stacks and stacks of back issues of 3 different ones. I only like one these days, the rest are too repetitious. So yeah, I'm with you. I love my Quilters World E-subscription though
Bored, not so much, just overwhelmed. For a while I was taking five quilting magazines, and it just got to be too much. So, I've decided to let them all lapse - it's not as if I didn't have enough ideas already - I have enough for at least two lifetimes -and as if you folks didn't keep me revved up about some new project every time I come online. <G> Who needs magazines?
I don't take any quilting magazines anymore, and very rarely do I check them out of the library or even glance at the when at the grocery store. I have never made a project from one...it seems I get more than enough ideas at the LQS. And, it seems like the last time I leafed through one, it was mostly ads. Can't say that I miss them.
I need to agree. It's been very disappointing, especially those on the shelves right now.
It's more fun to search the internet for something new. |
i have so many books i dont know what to do with all of them . Same ole thing in everyone of them. i have some really old ones that my great Aunt gave me they have ever thing that the news ones do , just better pictures . hmmm bored with them also . Barbara in Tx
I used to buy them all as soon as they came out. Was looking at a couple today and thought "same old thing, nothing really grabs me" and walked away! Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way!
I've let most of them lapse. I still like American Patchwork by Better Homes and Garden because they throw in some nice purses which more than make up the cost of the subscription. I would never give up Sew News and pick up Threads at JoAnn's on occasion, but they aren't quilting magazines.
I get F&P and hardly look at it anymore. I feel they are getting to be very one sided----their side! So if you dont care for their taste there isnt much in it for you.
there was a link here about 2 weeks ago for a 6 month free emag subscription to the austrailian mag maybe someone remembers it

Reading this thread, I am learning a lot that will be very helpful for me with my new online magazine. I would very much appreciate your input as to what you want to find in a quilting magazine. I hear a lot of negatives, so what are the positives? What do you find exciting in a quilting magazine? I have a list to get started. To help me out, what part of quilting do you enjoy and why?
Is it cutting fabric, quilting, designing, patchwork, applique, crazy quilts, art quilts, penny rugs, hand piecing, machine piecing, foundation paper piecing, english paper piecing, hand quilting, machine quilting, embroidery or something else? Thank you so much for your input! What a great group this is! Cindy Mccoy http://www.quiltpatternmagazine.com |
I agree. I'm trying to weed out my magazines and making a real effort not to buy more. I currently have two subscriptions and will probably discontinue those renewal is due. It would take me several lifetimes to make the quilts for which I have patterns.
Yep I feel the same way. I first started getting them about 2 years ago because I was just getting started in making quilts. Thought it would help if I could see through other peoples eyes and their ideas. Well, it's been interesting but for the most part, what I see in these magazines are not something I would want to do. On an occasion, I will see something that draws me in but for the most part, nope I find better stuff going shopping that will strike an interesting design or layout that I can draw up myself.
Yes. No more subscriptions for me. They are not interesting anymore. Same ole same ole.
Have not renewed any magazine subscriptions this year!
My favorite magazine lost my interest when Helen Kelley died- her article was always the first thing I read! Also, I was super tired of trying to figure out when the subscription ran out-either it wasn't on the again, or had two dates, or the company kept sending me invoices even though my subscription wasn't due! |
With me having close to 400 magazines (give or take a couple), I haven't had a subscription in years. They were given to me by my sisters MIL before she passed away. The dates go a couple from the early 70's to 2009. Sometimes I think the older ones are the best because they have the full patterns drawn in and copied over. I love the articles and the trips back in time. I wanted to sell some of them but I'd feel guilty charging for them...make scense?! Besides, I wouldn't know how much for how many and then the postage....to much to handle. Maybe later I'll try selling, who knows.
I have noticed they bill you 3-4 months before they are due. If you do not keep track, you are paying like every 6 to nine months. So they are really ahead. I am beginning to see the trend of same stuff in most of them. The internet does have much of what I need. Will probably let this years run out but keep what I have. When I want something different, I thumb through till I get an inspiration. I do like that McCalls now have a disclaimer for using their patterns so we are not hit due to the patten law.

The only subscription I had was American Patchwork. It offered a very diverse selection. Not only quilts, but quick little things too. But then they started giving the patterns away for free on their website, allpeoplequilt.com. Every single pattern in the magazine that I was paying for was listed in the exact order they appear in the magazine! Why in the world would I continue paying for something they were giving away! I do enjoy Quilts & More and Quilt Sampler, but these are both seasonal.
I still gain from Quilting Arts mag but don't subscribe to any others. good subject
As far as I'm concerned, since last year, see one you see them all. Up on prices and nothing new or intresting.
Me too!!! I look thru them at the grocery store, nothing there that I haven't done. haven't bought a mazine in months. elise
That's just hilarious! I got two magazines yesterday and thought the same thing. Being a member of this board has spoiled me for thinly veiled advertising. Did ya ever notice that most magazines feature fabric from their advertisers only? I think that is part of why I am bored with them. I'd much rather see what real quilter's (in the trenches, as it were) chose to do with fabric combinations. Finding your own 'colors' make a quilt so much more your own. IMHO...

I do, just a recycling of pattern, colors, etc.

Many of the current quilting magazines today are owned and managed by the same company. Over the past 4 years, they have begun to look and feel more alike. In addition, most of the 10-12 issues per year have converted to 6 issues per year. i certainly did not see an increase in my subscription expiration time, when they switched to half as many issues!
I decided in Oct. 2010 that I would allow all of my subscriptions to lapse. I have taken Q. Newsletter since the 3rd year it started in publication. Sort of sad... It would be nice if there were more machine quilting mags. I have noticed that several of the regular quilt mags. have started focusing a bit more on the quilting recently. :hunf: :-( |
I like the library idea. had thought of it one other time but didn't follow thriugh. Now I'm going to try that! Thanks
There are so many free patterns on line that, once my subscriptions lapse, I won't renew. Nothing much inspires me anymore. I volunteer with a quilt ministry at my church and we recently received a ton of donated magazines from the 80's and 90's and those are really interesting to look through! Times sure have changed!
Problem is, they also start repeating themselves after awhile.

Hello All, I was wondering when one subscribe to the digital magazines. Is it downloaded onto one's computer or is it stored online and one has to log into the website to access the magazines? :)
I've been getting subscriptions to several Quilt magazines for several years and now I am not renewing because the all have the same patterns different fabric. Look at my old ones and they are the same as the new ones . New ones are full of ads

What really annoys me is when I find the EXACT same quilt (fabric, designer, etc.) in more than one magazine!
The only reason I buy them is because my boss' daughter sells subscriptions for Girl Scouts but I didn't buy one this year. I figure if I find one quilt I like in a magazine when JoAnns has 10% off, then it's no more expensive than if I bought a single quilt patter in the LQS. So I think I'll start browsing again and only buy one if I REALLY want something in it. |
Never. The more the merrier.
Never. The more the merrier. I can usually find one or more patterns to incorporate into a quilt.
Yep, ditto on all the previous posts. Not renewing McCalls or The Quilt Life (Alex Alexanders), they are the current running out magazines. Did the same with garden magazines several years ago and narrowed it down to 3 that I still take, even they are becoming available on line, so will see what happens.
