I did the same thing for a piano key border for a scrappy quilt. I had enough for two quilts so I am in the process of making another one.

Good idea with the orphan blocks. I give them to a group that make small quilts to go with stuffed animals for children.
I love your Puppy. I had one just like him a long time ago. Now I have a white one. The one I had was named Scamp.
