Yes, I have, but Norton was replaced by other security software. The tech guy said Norton was well known for causing 'internal conflict' within a great many computers. It was causing blue screen on an almost daily basis and made the system virtually useless as a result. Haven't blue screened since Norton moved out. :D

I'm not at all convinced that what's happening is any kind of bug at our end of things. We'll see if Patrice is able to find anything out from Admin's investigation, but it's just too coincidental that it's happening to a number of us on this board as well as groups of people on other boards as well. Thursday was the last time it happened to me...immediately after I posted my first comment on this thread and mentioned the name of the offending advertiser. Coincidence?

that's a pretty good indication that the advertiser is the source and culprit. the offending adware must be very cleverly written.

i use symantec, which is a Norton product (i think). i'm always logged onto the board, so my computer is always here even when i am not. i haven't had the problem. (knock on wood and wood byproducts.)

fingers crossed i didn't just jinx myself.

Actually Norton is a Symantec product, but I get what you mean. After I'm done working tonight, I'll scrub the entire system again and see if anything shows up this time. Thanks.

No problems here, maybe you could ask admin if there is trouble anywhere else

the problem is definitely not coming from our board. if it was, we'd all have it.

i know the question has been referred to the techs because i sent it in myself. i don't know whether or not they'll be able to track down any information that will help fix it.

sewcrafty 02-06-2011 05:01 AM

Boy I hope something gets found, its driving me nutz!! (not a far step here! LOL) I've done my scans and still happens. In fact, the first time I clicked on here - pop-up!

Tinabodina 02-06-2011 05:14 AM

Run a virus cleanup program.

Is this happening to anyone else?

I think you may have malware on your computer. I had one that was trying to sell me their anti virus program and I had to contact justanswer.com. which is a company that links a number of experts in particular fields to help. In this case, I was able to eventually remove the malware but it does cost. I didn't, however, have to take my computer in for repair.

cindyg19 02-06-2011 05:29 AM

btw, i had norton, which didn't even detect the malware. i had to go thru 3 different online antivirus programs to finally get rid of it. unfortunately, the company accessed my charge card info and billed me for what they say is their anti virus program. i quickly changed my card.

can somebody post some screeen shots for us so i can see what this monster looks like?

this is outside my area of expertise, but unless i see it i can't even begin to guess.

The screen shot would be the web page of the advertiser, at least for me (...my...web...face w/o the dots) and I'm not going there, nor would I recommend anyone else do so.

One of the other forums having this same issue with the same advertiser is the Snopes forum. It may be the same type of roll-over redirect worm that has spread throughout twitter and facebook. You don't have to click the ad to become infected, just roll your mouse over it. Scarey!

gale 02-06-2011 12:13 PM

When the window pops up click your print screen button and then paste it to a new document in word. It should show the page you're on and the popup page. You don't have to click on the popup.

ghostrider 02-06-2011 01:03 PM

It is not a pop up...it's a redirect to another page. The entire QB page redirects to the "other" page. (i.e., this page turns into that page...entirely) If you hit the back button, you go back to QB and then right back to the advertiser again. The only way out is to close the browser altogether and then open it again.

I know how to do a screen shot, there's just no point in this case. It would simply be the web page of the advertiser. I don't know how else to explain that.

dixiechunk 02-06-2011 04:16 PM

No, but seems like several posts (threads) have been removed. So, what's that all about?

the two things are not related.

Annz 02-06-2011 06:28 PM

A lot of times I have advertisements coming up over where the reply is so I cann't reply to anything on the board and this is very frustrating. I don't know how to correct it except to get out of the board and click on again sometimes for a number of times before it clears up.

gale 02-06-2011 08:23 PM

If it's a redirect then it must be malware or something. It isn't happening to everyone so it has to be on the computers that it happens to (horrible grammar-sorry).

gale 02-06-2011 08:26 PM

Are there certain threads it happens on or just on the main forum page? I just went to the board with IE, which does not have adblock, and so far I'm not getting any redirects or pop ups.

somebody sent me these clues by pm:

Hi Patrice, just at the beginning of the post about ?(slamming) it happened to me. I immediatly tried to get rid of it, by using the red X and it just came back. I checked my popup site down at the bottom of screen and found that it was off! I always have it ON. It happened again in our site so I checked and again it was off. Clicked OFF again & so far so good. Don't know if that is what happened to others but since I fixed it the second time it hasn't happened on the rest of that same post.

this indicates that whatever it is has made it past your firewalls and anti-virus/adware/malware program(s) and might be turning off your pop-up blockers.
**************

When I am reading a post, the screen will automatically navigate to a page such as the following. I have gotten different pages, but they are all from http://mywebface.mywebsearch.com.

The most recent instance was when I was on this post:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-95753-1.htm

However, when I now open this post in a different browser window, I'm not being redirected.

http://mywebface.mywebsearch.com/dow...203327_3380074

the question is whether both conditions described are coming from the same website (mywebface).

no matter which anti-virus/adware/malware program(s) you use, do a manual software update to ensure you have all of the latest versions and updates installed. if your program(s) don't automatically update themselves replace them with program(s) that do. even then, check them often to see if they've been updated. in addition to that ...

In Windows Internet Explorer:
--Check your pop-up blocker settings. Choose the highest security setting.
--Check your In-Private Browsing settings.
--Make sure the SmartScreen Filter is turned on.
--Check your Security settings in your Internet Options. set your Restricted Sites to the highest security level.

i use FireFox, too, but not often enough to have become at all familiar with the security setting options. maybe somebody else can help us with that.

sewcrafty 02-07-2011 05:34 AM

Thanks Patrice! Have reset everything let's see what happens.

kathidahl 02-07-2011 06:45 AM

When you all get this cleaned up try Chrome. Check this out:
http://www.theblogismine.com/2011/02...o-hack-chrome/
Chrome wins the hacker challenge in the past and likely will again.

topics are deleted if they are not in line with our rules. those rules are in place to protect the best interests of our members and of the board.

topics are moved if they are in the wrong place. (this isn't usually considered a "no-no". 999 times out of 1,000 it's just an accident. )

Patrice we appreciate all the efforts to keep the QB "the informative, fun, fair and well-cared for website we love. Thanks to you all.

the "help" is for members to read and follow proper procedures.

i don't want to sound harsh or snarky. cross my heart. we love you all to pieces, even when you make mistakes.

but the facts is the facts.

Oops! sorry, I didn't scroll down far enough

MYFACE is the same site i have been having a problem with. It only happens on this forum. my husband ran some software yesterday and it hasnt come up since, but today i was getting something different. I tried to page back and it wouldnt work and then i was getting this background noise that sounded like a video game. No picture pop up or page change just the noise like i was on another site. If i can get a screen print of the address i will send it. I could see it flashing on the bottom of the screen but it was going so quick i couldnt get the name
Very strange... i wish they would stop targeting this site if that is what is going on.

patricej 02-12-2011 05:10 PM

have hubby check the scan logs in the program he ran yesterday. he might be able to figure out where the virus has stored itself on your hard drive and what to watch for from now on.
