Does anyone remember how to make a "quilt in a pocket?" It is from the 80s. I think you made a lap quilt and sewed a block on the front in which you left one side of the block unsewn. Then you folded up the quilt and stuffed it inside of the block thereby creating a pillow. I need to make one for my granddaughter but can't recall how to do it exactly. Anyone remember these?

I remember those but can't help with instructions. Sorry.

I've seen instructions on-line, under the name Quillow. I'm not familiar with the "Quilt in a Pocket" name, but it sure seems to be the same thing. If I can find a link to some instructions I'll add it. Otherwise, just searching on Quillow should get you some good info.

I believe you're looking for a pattern called Quillows which is a combination of Quilt + Pillow. Basically, its a lap size quilt that can be folded up and stuffed into a "pocket" on the back of the quilt to create a pillow.

Try this link about half way down the page are instructions

I certainly remember Quillows. When they came out in the 70"s I made tons of them. Still have some too in the living room. I see you found the name and patterns. Have fun.

I also know it as a quillow and I made one - or I should say that I attempted to make one. Now I realize that my fabric was off grain and the whole thing was wonky. I am not the one to give you instructions.

I remember them ... think I saw an old book in my stash of instructions yesterday ... if so, you can have it just for the postage if you'd like

Thanks everyone for the help. The links are just the help I need. Now off to Joann's to find ladybug fabric. Wish me luck!

I have a beach towel made from the same idea. It has 2 straps so that it can be worn back-pack style to the beach. The opening at the top allows me to stuff a book, my stitching, and sunscreen, etc. in there as well. I arrive at the shore hands free with all my needs in one easy to tote package. It`s a wonderful thing.

I was thinking about making quillows for my grands for the car. They will store easily and be handy for if they are chilly OR to toss over their carseats in the summer to keep the metal parts from getting so hot :D:D:D

Yeah, it's called a 'quillow' now. you can get that pattern almost anywhere off the internet for free:)

I found this one tonight.. maybe its one that you can do.

Thought I'd add my experience with making quillow a long time ago. I didn't like how they fit (or didn't) in the pocket, So, I decided to add bands to three sides. I doubled them (sewed right sides together then turned rso. I stitched them into seams of pillow on three sides. Each strip was finished so had small gaps at the corners...my thinking was that it would give more room for all of that blanket to fit in a little easier. A little tricky sewing onto quilt top, but it did work nicely and he still won't give it up! :) He just turned 17 last month.

I've made dozens and would be glad to send you my pattern if you pm your email. I think there are 3 sizes but I usually make the small one for children and the large one for adults. I'm out of town till the weekend so can't send it till I get to my other computer. I could just post the pattern in the tutorials. It's a scanned document so don't know if I can post it or not. I'll try this weekend. I'd be glad to send it to anyone that wants it.

McCalls or Simplicity has it in their newest catalog. I saw it last week. I made several of them for gifts in the 80s. |

I HAVE SEEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS QUILT - IT IS CALLED A QUILLO. FONS AND PORTER DID A SEGMENT ON MAKING THEM. CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSIT AT fonsandporter.com.

They are called Quillows. I recently made one for each of my 2 teenage grand-daughers. I had made them in the past but not for years so had a little trouble remembering where/when the pocket goes on. I also made them a little larger than the ones I used to make. (at their request) I see there have been some websites posted for you. Good luck!

I think you put the pocket on the front, bottom of the quilt--in the middle; leaving the pocket open on the bottom edge. When you turn the quilt over, fold each side to the middle, fold it into the front pocket, it becomes a pillow. Make sense?
|
I just finished making two quillows for my granddaughter and her friend for graduation. I made a 20" square pillow and a 50x60 inch quilt. (width of quilt=2 1/2 x the pillow and length =3x the pillow). Make a complete pillow and complete quilt and then sew the pillow flush to one end and centered on the quilt with the flush end left open. I tied the quillow instead of quilting it. Fold both edges to the back of the quilt, turn it up by thirds and fold into the pillow opening (that's the hardest part). Using a square pillow you can make any size quilt by making the width 2 1/2 times the pillow and the length 3 times the pillow.

I made several "quillows" years ago. If I remember correctly, it's like someone else mentioned. I made the patchwork top first. Then decided how big the finished quilt would be. I figured out measurements a bit larger than 1/3 of the width, & about 1/4 of the length to make an independent "pocket". I attached the pocket to the backing (centering it a few inches above the lower edge of the quilt). Put right sides together, stitch, leaving an opening just below the pocket. Stitch opening, tie or quilt body as you choose. Hope I've explained it well enough, as it has been many years. Have fun!

go into goggle and type in Pattern for quillow I made one for my grandson. And that is what I remember them being called

I made a quillow for my sister a few years ago. She told me it's the best gift she's ever had. She said she covers herself with the quillow pocket facing her feet and snuggles her feet into the pocket. I hope she never has to get up fast and forget her feet are in the pocket.

Just heard about this quilt and I looked it up on the internet. It is called a quillow. I found the directions but I haven't made one yet.

Granny59 that is adorable, I made one for my GD when she was 2 years old I'll have to post pictures, I still have it and she will be 18 next week.

You make the pocket one third of the width of you lap quilt. Sew it on the back of the quilt in the middle, with the pieced section of the pocket facing to the inside. When you fold up the lap quilt, you fold it in thirds, fold down towards the pocket. Then flip the pocket out over the quilt so that the quilt is in the pocket and the pieced side of the pocket is now facing out. I also put a sewn handle on so that it is easy to carry to the beach or wherever. When you unfold it all the pocket is large enough to snuggle your feet into. Hope this helps!
