Anything fundamentally wrong with this layout
1 Attachment(s)
I am color challenged AND new to quilting, so am looking for advice...attached is a proposed layout for my quilt. The missing squares will be plain off white. Please tell me if I am breaking any kind of color contrast matching rules...I have laid it out so many times, nothing says THIS IS IT, yet nothing is awful. I just want to be sure I shouldn't have thought of something important....but I have no idea what that might be. May I please have some words of experience before I sew this baby together?
It looks good to me. Scrappies are tough to lay out. At some point you just say the sentence i use on my matchy-matchy daughter, "It all goes together when it's sewn together." Very nice workmanship.
I like what you have there. Don't see anything glaring that needs moving. Sometimes with scrappy quilts you just have to say "looks good enough" and go with it.
It looks well balanced to me!!! Colors and values are nicely spaced out.
Your blocks are nice but if you look at the colour of your design wall, that will be about the same as the off white squares. I might go for a little warmer colour similar to the others. Or I might go wild and crazy and do those squares in a plaid or paisley that picks up some of the other colours.
looks good, in my book, there are no color rules.
I like it and the colors except the background - Something like a natural colored muslin would keep the warmth. (doesn't have to be muslin, but that color). Its a very "friendly" quilt.
It looks good to me. I would maybe switch out one of the blocks in the lower left quadrant where you have matching fabric. And I wouldn't use a light background. I'd try scrappy tone-on-tone fabric blocks that read solid-- rich chocolate deep forest green, coral, red clay, sand, pumpkin.
Scrappy is hard to balance because there is always something not perfect, yours is pretty close. Just me, but I would trade the striped section, first row on the left, third one down, dark outer strip with a light inner strip, with the green stripe next row over on the bottom. The dark strip is so similar to the square of the next block it reads as one stripe.
This is turning out wonderful. I don't thinks there is any real problems.
Take a look at the second block down in the first column, The lighter shades are one the outsides of the strips and there are two other places like this. All the other strip blocks are darker on the outside and lighter on the inside. They aren't wrong or anything like that but depending on what shade the center fabric is going to be, they might wash out the pattern if the colors are too similar. I really like the overall look of the quilt and would be personally very happy with this accomplishment. I love scrappy quilts and I think even being color challenged as you say, you have a good eye for scrappy quilting. Congratulations. peace |
what a wonderful fun and warm looking quilt.one you want to wrap up in. I do agree that white would be too blaring and needs a subtle middle blocks and with it being scrappy maybe various tans/beiges/warms.

This quilt feels not so much 'scrappy' to me a "country" or "homespun" or 'cabin-y'. The colors "can be" very masculine. I think tartan hit it pretty close when she made the suggestion to consider other than white for your plain squares....I believe that is what is hindering your "it's perfect" impression.
Something warmer like tan, or ecru, or a pale muddish peach, or other similar hues and values would probably fall right into favor with you. It's a great block pattern and the finished quilt will make you so proud! hope you will share what you did when you finish. Something like these maybe: (They are less muddy and more bright than I expected, but perhaps you get the gist.) Jan in VA |
Looks good. Go for it. :-)

i think w/ the wall having that blue print throws everything off.

Looks good to me.
When I am pleased with a scrappy, I sew it together. They will keep someone warm. |
When I make a scrappy I try to not have the same fabrics real close to each other. I see two instances where you have the same fabric going up and sideways with the same piece (top center-ish and bottom right corner) If that doesn't bother you - go for it. I also agree with the others that white is too stark. I'd go more with a tan.
Love your pattern and color combination.
Your white squares and border may be a little too bright. Try replacing them with a "tan nothing" -- that is a tan on tan or a beige on beige fabric and see if that doesn't make your wonderful quilt a little warmer and homier. The softness of a beige or tan may make your colors pop a little more.
I agree with several other members, you might consider another fabric in place of the white squares and border but I like your layout and use of scraps.
The two pieced squares with the cream and dark brown down the center are on the left side and bottom need to be in the center area...all of your outside squares have a darker color with a darker "bar" down the middle.....to be consistent with all your outside squares, I would move those two and exchange for colored squares...hope this makes sense......love your quilt!
Totally agree! Your quilt, your choice.

I agree with Tartan. I love your colors and layout, but want those large, single-fabric blocks to be something warmer than white. I'd choose a color I love -- not too bright and not too pale -- for those blocks.
I think it is fine - my suggestion though, is to try and put your blocks on a design wall somewhere that you can stand back from it - I do this in the basement where i can get 15 or 20 feet away. You get a much more "cohesive" look and blocks that aren't quite right will be more readily apparent.
I think you did a great job. All colors are very well balance.
Looks good. I think scrappy quilts are awesome. No matter how I try to get things perfect, they never are and everyone thinks they are great. I have a hard time not pointing out what I think should be different but am learning to just say thank you. Enjoy your quilt it is going to be beautiful
There are no rules for scrappy quilts that I know of, and just don't let the "quilt police" in when they come calling! Seriously, your layout looks great! Just move on and do it.
Some people pointed to a block that didn't seem to fit. I think it was the second from the bottom in the second row to the left. That 9-patch could be changed to light in the four corners and it would make more contrast with the surrounding colors. You would just need one more light square to fix it. Or a color that is close for the center of the 9-patch would work.
I see no one likes your design wall as your center squares. LOL I love the quilt and it will be beautiful when finished. |
I think your quilt is great....however I might have made the plain blocks out of eggshell or light ivory instead of white.
This looks pretty well balanced as is, but before you sew may I suggest that you take a look at the following change: in rows 2 and 4, interchange the blocks in columns 1 and 5.
Love scrappies! I tend to think to that a warm color for the center blocks would be add to the warm, cozy feeling.
I have made a couple small scrappy quilts-there is a knack to it! BTW-Nice job! Taking a note from painter Bob Ross- Plant your tree where you please-something like that... |
Your layout is gorgeous, but I'm with Tartan. I don't think off-white is warm enough with your beautiful fabrics, or interesting enough. I also like her idea of plaid or paisley, leaning more the paisley.
I think it looks fine. If I were to change anything it would be to swap the first split rail in bottom row with the third split rail in bottom row just because the first and second block have the same fabric. But, it isn't a big deal. As someone else said, scrappy quilt layouts can drive you crazy if you let them - there are so many, many, many ways to lay them out. All the colors you have chosen give this quilt a very warm, cuddly feel. Good job.
The light blue squares and background don't match the intensity of the other colors. I would pick out one of the darker colors you have used and use that for the inside squares. Possibly the red or the green.
I like how you fussy cut the center squares. Your layout is great! I wouldn't change a thing.
I really like your scrappy quilt, but do agree with Tartan, Kitsie and others that a warmer background might work better. Can't wait to see your finished quilt!
It looks fine to me. Very scrappy.
I think it looks great. As Irish rose 2 said, scrappies can be tough to lay out, but I like how yours is put together.
