Hi Suz, Applique was not one of my favorites until I learned the back-basting method, after that it was off to the races, as they say. One of my quilting friends has been after me to try a wash away fusible ...... so early this summer I made a baby quilt for my great niece and it had some applique. I did use the wash away fusible and it does wash out but it was a little hard (at times) to needle through. I might try the fusible again.

The wedding quilt that I made for my youngest daughter was 95% applique and the quilt that my hubby has claimed as his is about 50% applique. My soon-to-be applique project is Edyta Sitar's Dreamcatcher.

I've tried different techniques, but my favorite is to use freezer paper and then baste the edges down. There is something really zen about hand appliqué. I love it.

I love appliqué and use Sewer paper available at Home Depot in the plumbing section. I sew it on the back and then turn it and appliqué it on my fabric. It is very light weight and works like a charm. If you use it make sure to only press with a warm (not hot) iron

I recall a quilter who was stitching leaves in such a way to cause the outside edge to be scalloped. Very interesting! I want to review same and try to use her method. Again, thank you.

I also love applique and all kinds I took a 2 day work shop from Harriet Hargrave a lot of years ago and loved her method also did one from Eleanor Burns from her book quilt in a day different method but fun and another I have done is to cut my pieces a little larger and stitch on the traced line and they turn very easy using the stitch line for turning raw edge certainly has its place but I to like to carry hand work and I am thinking of stating a hand applique one right now I am hooked on those row quilts and I am doing them using heat and bond light using my applique blanket stitch for my quilting You might also try an applique sampler I took a class on tha many years ago and can't remember the name of the book but it was hearts and each heart was done using a different method then you can fond out which one you really prefer just dive in and have fun I have always like sun bonnet sue and there are many of her patterns for free.

I too am a lover applique but I do the wonder under and the hand blanket stitch. One of my favorite site is fat cat patterns.com she has tons of free patterns and does BOM every years another site that has a good one is fat quarter shop.com
