It was in Tillamook, I posted it a couple of months ago, I am so sorry that you missed the post, it was the first time I went to this one and was blown away at how wonderful it was. It was in Rockaway actually, and you stayed at the camp, food was provided,and a place to sleep. Went with two of my friends. It's small, compared to Sister's, but very family-like. They have quite a selection of classes to take, with a good variety of skill levels. I took a class in Lady of the lake feathered star, it was definitely above my skill level, but I did learn quite a bit. My second class was called Cinco de Mayo, and it was a fancy many arced New york Beauty, and I absolutely loved the two day class, which I got to take with one of my friends. I had a blast combining colors, and paper piecing all the arcs. I only got 1 1/2 blocks finished. Did I tell you NYB is my fav. block. They have held this particular Quilter's retreat for 19 years. They even have people that have been to all 19 retreats. An the last night they have show and tell. A great time was had by all.

I started out with a project that is like 3 pictures of flowers in vases, all separate blocks. The first one is a starter level, the second one intermediate, and the third one quite a bit harder. On the picture project, I can't seem to get flower petal edges that ripple to look nice. I've tried freezer paper/starch, needle turn, back basting and none of them are great. I don't know how to get the petal edge ripples to look good as I'm stitching them down. They seem to bulk up or get too pointy instead of being flowing curves. It's a hump, dip, hump, dip, hump on a small piece of fabric, maybe 1" wide. Then it's combined with 5 others petals with the same edging to create the flower. Any hints here, I would really appreciate...I just can't seem to get it!

Have you tried the old garment makers thing of clipping/notching your curves just a tiny bit. It might relax it or cause it to be less bulky.

I personally like needle turn best. But have found on really small pieces fusing is a must however you then have to sew the edges too which I dislike sometimes, so I wait til my mood is right :lol:
I recently tried reverse applique' for the first time, fun. But I am working on a blended applique' piece which is very challenging. When I finish (if) I will try to remember to post a picture.

I'm doing my first applique which is quite a project. I don't seem to ever be interested in starting slowly. Anyhow, the only part that seems to be giving me trouble is the very tiny pieces that are less than 1/2 inch that are not circles. I'm using the template on back side and press technique. Is there a better way besides patience? What techniques are best for what type of shape or so you use whatever you feel comfortable with?

I cut them out on fabric now and actually laid them out on my flannel board in my office (they don't know it is a flannel board or what I use it for--grins).

This is the pix layout with the roughly cut hearts. Over lunch hour I will start to cut out the hearts and probably heat n bond them to the background fabric. I was "told" to do the blanket stitch on them from a friend since they like it better than needle turn. It's my fault...I DID say that I need to work on that stitch more.

Quiltbuddy, when I do very small pieces, I reduce the seam allowance and do needleturn. This reduces bulk and the edges turn easier. Don't forget to use the toothpick or sandwich pick. Be patient.

Bonnie, the fabric selection is wonderful. I know you can do a great job appliqueing since you have had so much practice.

I am anxious to hear how everything progresses. I plan to select my fabrics today and get started also.

Its a block of the month by Erin Russek, but she still has all the patterns up for each month. They are on block 10, but I'm just now starting. There are 12 blocks, with an additional center medallion type block.

She has already put up pics of the 2011 BOM, and its awesome, too!

Oh do you think a bignner can do these? This exactly what I have been dieing to start.
