Asking for pic where you sew...

not pic of your beautiful sewing room BUT your functional sewing area. I have feeling most of us like the letter L.

What do you mean?

PaperPrincess 11-01-2014 05:18 AM

I think she means that we have a table perpendicular to our sewing surface, so an "L" shaped work area.
We have a sub forum under pictures called "Mission Organizaton" for photos of work areas showing storage & work rooms:

I think the letter "L" means 'living room'.I hand sew and do redwork in the living room so I can share time with my husband , but for machine sewing I go to our converted two car garage ( my new sewing room). No pics yet, camera broken.

tessagin 11-01-2014 06:34 AM

I hand sew at the computer, DH office, living room, kitchen, outside, car. I have a designated sewing room that is like many but have some yardage getting ready to true up and starch and cut. Covered by tablecloths.

Abby'smom 11-01-2014 06:44 AM

Sorry, no picture -- but my main sewing area is L shaped, upside down!!

Rose Marie 11-01-2014 07:38 AM

Mine is strait along one wall. But next to my sewing machine on the other wall is my flannel area for my blocks to hang up. This way all I have to do is stand up to get the blocks I want to sew togather. This is very handy and easy to use.
I just had to replace my computer and now I cant find my pictures of my sewing room. All my pictures are in strange places.

Okay but it ain't fancy. My son is making me a surround for my machine for FMQ but hasn't had time yet. I am in panty production for Christmas right now.

joe'smom 11-01-2014 09:29 AM

I don't have a table right next to my machine. A shelving unit is to my left, and a chair with a radio setting on it is on the right. I'm constantly getting up from the machine to pin, press or cut, but this works well for me, as I can't sit for too long at one time because of back issues. So my machine is on the west wall, my table is on the north wall and my ironing board and design wall are on the east wall.

Tartan, could you explain how you got your photo posted only once, instead of twice? Also, is there a way to reduce the size of photos? Mine always come out huge. Thanks!

Tartan 11-01-2014 09:39 AM

I take my photos with my iPad and it goes into my camera roll and then I just click on the little tree icon above the reply box. I follow the prompts in the tree icon and click upload. The picture appears in the post after I click submit. I never did learn how to post from my computer.

joe'smom 11-01-2014 10:05 AM

Thank you, Tartan. It sounds like basically the same procedure. My photos show up small in the reply box before I hit submit, but then they're huge in the thread, and all post twice.

I've got a unit with casters and I push/pull it forming a L shape to iron while piecing. Very handy!!!

Jackie Spencer 11-01-2014 02:23 PM

My sewing table is 4 ft. by 8 ft.. My sewing machine is set in a well so its flush with the table top. On one end I have a large cutting mat, and there is a double tier of shelves underneath.

My design wall is on my right between two bookcases of books and quilting supplies. My cutting table is behind me and I set up my ironing board nearby. Works for me. (And thanks Tartan for the instructions...I finally know how to post a pic.)

I have an L but the L is backwards for helping with sewing. I do really like my configuration but plan on making it a "U" shape when I move into my daughter's room after she is out of college.

QuiltingByFiona 11-02-2014 02:22 AM

I use quite a high cutting bench for my machine to sit on. I found that on a normal height table I would bend my neck towards the machine and end up with neck pain. Now I use a high bar stool on wheels and am almost in a standing position. Works for me!

zennia 11-02-2014 02:36 AM

No picture but yes mine is L shaped. Long sewing table my husband made and ironing station on the left side. The other L, the living room, yes to that to.

When I'm using my HQSixteen to free-motion quilt, I move my cutting table and put it to the left, and my ironing board with the Big Board and put it on the right. I'm able to adjust both of them down to table-top height to hold the bulk of the quilt that I'm working on.

When I'm finished with free-motion quilting, I move the cutting table and ironing board to other locations.

sewmini 11-02-2014 07:56 AM

I have a U shape arrangement and works really well for me.

I've taken over the dining room...and it's a mess. I'm making quilted bags at the moment.

AngelinaMaria 11-02-2014 10:26 AM

sewbiz girl--that is certainly a lot going on. I love the look and fabric of your bags. My dining room would make a nice sewing area but we invested a lot into our table, chairs and china cabinet plus the room is very open to the rest of the house. How many bags are you making?

borntoquilt 11-02-2014 10:34 AM

SEWBIZGIRL - cool looking bags! What r they ? Also like your Bernina Record 30 lurking in the corner. I also have one and she is my work horse.....

borntoquilt 11-02-2014 10:35 AM

oops ! that should read 830 not 30 (smacks self in head **!)

Terry in the ADK 11-02-2014 01:02 PM

JENNR8R, do you have a contraption to take the weight off the quilt while using your Sweet 16? If so will you tell me more about it, please?

Yes, those are dog grooming arms with clamps attached to the ends of the straps to hold the quilt up off of the table. The arms attach to the back of the HQ Sixteen table perfectly with fasteners that came with the dog grooming arms.

I read about them on the "HQ Sweet Sixteen Quilters" Facebook group. I haven't had them very long, and I'm not totally sold on their usefulness to me. I think they would be more helpful if I didn't have so much table space that already supports my quilt.

Terry in the ADK 11-02-2014 01:31 PM

Do you have a suspension system for your Sweet Sixteen, JENNR8R? If so please tell us about it.

nanacc 11-02-2014 01:39 PM

A pic right now would be too embarrassing!! I have settled in a nook of our living room. My work area is L-shaped, if you don't consider the quilt frame behind me.

beksclen 11-02-2014 01:48 PM

Mine is U shaped and I can walk around my cutting/ironing table.

I like a high work surface too, Fiona, even though I'm only 5'3". I can sew all day and all night with no back or neck pain at all.

My cutting area and sewing area are combined on a hollow core door. I can cut from the left end of the door if I need more than the 30" width of it. The studio is set up in a galley arrangement with a floor frame, ironing board and storage running parallel to the sewing/cutting area.

When we were working on this room we drew it on graph paper, trying to squeeze in all I needed. The only thing that moves is the ironing board, it swivels side to side, but is usually farthest from my sewing machine. It sort of forces me to get up to use it.
I guess it's sort of a mangled U

This is my sewing shop. It measures 15' x 30'. It is located in a garage type building. My husband has his shop in the same building. I love it!

Thanks to Jeanie G.'s explanation of attachments in the mystery quilt thread, I'm going to give posting pictures a try. It's fun to see everyone's work area; there are some beautiful work spaces there! These are from when I had just embarked on the quilting adventure and we first set up my sewing room; I had almost no fabric!

I cranked out 12 this weekend... for a craft show next weekend. I already had a few so I should have a decent selection.

I knew you meant 830... This is the second one I've had. I love them and have been sewing on them for at least 30 years if not more. A couple of years ago I got the Juki, and it's just THE BOMB for quilting!

The bags are just quilted organizer bags... like for eyeglasses, makeup, traveling. I just make them up as I go along, all different sizes. They are all zippered, quilted, and lined.

The "L" has it! Love being able to use my grandparents old kitchen (everything) table! Bread making Saturdays with Nana! *sniff*

Love seeing everyone's sewing spaces. My sewing space is my dining room table...so not much to see. My fabric is kept upstairs, and just the current project comes down to the DR. I do have a corner I keep my threads, rulers, accessories.

I agree, cool bags. I am even more thrilled to see your sewing area looks just like mine, except mine is worse.
