Attic Windows
 

I,m trying to make attic windows and am having a hard time making them look, "3D".
I have looked at several patterns and made two, and still they are not right.
I have read, re-read and re-read the pattern and still I can't figure what I,m doing wrong.
Can someone tell me if there is a "simple" pattern, without Y-seams that is available.

Do you have a dark then light fabric? If you look in my album I've pit up two pics of attic window quilts. That should help you.

It is the contrast of light and dark that make them pop.

Thank you. That's the perfect answer to making a wall hanging from a cat panel I have and didn't know what to do with.:)

I have made them two ways - one, using light and dark brown for the window components, and all different prints in the window "panes" - the other, different light and dark prints for the window components and a "night sky" (navy with tiny white stars) for the panes. Both nice, but the second one - WOW!! really 3-D.

Yes, doing a HST instead of a "Y" seam is certainly easier.

I hope to make one sometime.

My avatar uses this technique. I did 1/2 square triangle in the corner. Color is key to the contrast. The greater the contrast the better the effect. I used three colors. Dark green for the sides of the box, light green for the bottom of the box and a narrow black strip of black for the edge of the box.

The pattern I used was a free download for a wall hanging and I just added more squares to make a lap quilt for a friend. If interested you can google cat in the attic for several links. These cats are not appliqued nor paper pieced so you have a lot of little pieces to work with.
