Have been admiring the attic window quilts with the Michael Miller panels, is this hard to do. Also wandering if anyone has done any of the stained glass hangings, this is something I would like to get into. Would like to hear your comments on these.

I'm attempting to do an attic window.
Just waiting for the black fabric that I ordered to come in, if it EVER comes. Seems like it has been on back order for ages!

I have a pattern that was sent to me, so I'm just waiting on fabric.

Tell you what, you go first, let me know how it was, then I will decide whether or not to tackle it myself! lol

amma 05-18-2008 06:47 PM

I am going to make an attic window, only instead of the Y seams I am going to use a 1/2 square triangle in the corners. Yep, it is cheating but if I plan the quilting correctly it should not show at all :D

I helped a friend of mine with a stained glass wall hanging. It was fun, we made our own bias strips, sprayed the backs of them with quilt basting spray and invisible stitched them down. We used a stained glass coloring book page and enlarged it to the size we wanted. These are really easy to do :D

I've done two stained glass hangings, but no attic window as yet.

I posted pics of them in the pictures forum, but some time back.

amma 05-18-2008 07:25 PM

I remember you posting these, Cordelia, they are very pretty! :D

Cordelia 05-18-2008 07:51 PM

Thanks. I was hoping you'd post pics of yours.

I've got two more in the works I'm thinking of posting. I have to snap pics of them.

I've got hundreds of design patterns I bought from Paned Expression Studios.

One was a paint by numbers kit I saw at the craft store. But, it turned out to be so much work, I can't ever seem to finish it. Instead of using bias tape, I was actually satin-stitching it. I'm not very good at that, so it's been my practice project.

amma 05-18-2008 08:02 PM

We did not have a camera :( and I was helping her make a gift so she does not have it, the wall hanging is traveling around the world with her sister.

Cordelia 05-18-2008 08:25 PM

What was it a wall hanging of?

Check out Paned Expressions' web site and check their CD designs. I've bought like ALL of them.

There's no way in the world I'll ever do all those. But, I'm a "tropical" enthusiast, so I like tropical scenes and they have lots of fabulous patterns for those.

I like rustic North American outdoors stuff, and they've got lots of patterns for that.

Here's the site:

You know, there is another interesting technique that can be done to mimic the appearance of stained glass, and that is to use a black fabric background.

Then, cut the pieces of the pattern and arrange them on the black background leaving a small space between the pieces that the black background fabric shows. That gives the effect of the bias tape or "leading" in the stained glass window.

But, it only really works well wtih simple patterns. Complicated patterns with lots of lines don't work so well that way. You have to use the bias tape.

I have been sketching out one of these designs, I am trying to keep it simple. One is of a cathedral window and the other one is a wrought iron fence and gate to use with the Michael Miller panels. I will check those other websites out tomorrow, thanks for the info. The one we did was of a daisy and we used all batiks. I like all kinds of subject matter and could get really hooked on making these

Amma, I know the black garden gate you mentioned for the Michael Miller panel. I found them on a website months ago before deciding to do attic windows, they are lovely but so very expensive to buy ready done. Please let me know how you get on with yours, I am not too good with fiddly things.

Alex Anderson recently had a program on attic window quilts called Attic windows 3 ways . The half triangle was really easy.

That looks great, very original too, its amazing the beautiful effects one can get with attic windows.

Very nice Patty, it has a wonderful under water effect, like looking through the glass at an aquarium :D

I will, I seen how expensive they were too, and decided to try this on my own.... I won't be doing much with this until I get back from vacation :D

thimblebug6000 05-19-2008 08:48 AM

How about some nice soft wavy looking seaweed designs?

Cordelia 05-19-2008 11:11 AM

Those tropical fish are sooooooo cool.

And I love the fabic choice you made for the borders.

Just fabulous.

Hi there, Can only go my what our Group as been doing and 2 or 3 have made the stained glass windows, they say they are easy and I must say the affect if amazing.

Someone else tried out the attic window, made a small pincushion, super affect but she said that it was a bit fiddily, could have been the size that she was doing it in though.

Cordelia those are amazing stained glass panels you did and that site I have earmarked for ME Elle

Never knew there was so many shades of black until visiting quilt shop in Amish country! Hope you get enough plus!!

Will have to look into this, have yet to hear of this style.

I just received an email, scroll down to the "bay window" rendition of an attic window, it pretty cool looking.

It is probably the only way I will ever get a bay window

How I wish you had not posted this, its got me thinking now

Can anyone fathom out how to cut the panel correctly to get the angle on the outside windows????

   I have a BIG roll of newsprint, and I am going to roll out a piece and see if I can draw it out on that..... I am NOT a mathmatician and if I can't figure something out, I may have to send it to one of my brothers    I thought it would be fun to see if I could make the bottom area bigger like a window seat and maybe applique in some cushions and a cat laying on the seat????

If you can do such a beautiful job on the attic windows, I think you could make lovely stained glass quilts, too :D It is like the applique work you have already done :D

MAXIES2 05-19-2008 02:49 PM

That would be lovely Amma, I have done the traditional attic window with that panel, and I do have another one of that design that I could use, but I am rather concerned about the angles, but if I print a large copy out then match the window panes on the photo to the actual panel I maybe close.
I now have something to worry about in bed .

Let me give you the site where I got the patterns for the dolphins and the orca wale. I've posted this website before and several people liked it, but I don't remember if you ever saw it.

You know those folks at Paned Expressions are real pros, serious artists. They made this pattern for me:

Barb M 05-19-2008 07:01 PM

Wow, i've never done an attic window, the bay window looks awesome. I think if you take the bay window and save it to your photo section, enlarge it a bit, and print it off, yes, the dimensions will be smaller, but all of the angles will be exact, and you can take the angles from that, or you can cut the photo into smaller pieces, and have them enlarged...hmmm, something like that lol

amma 05-19-2008 07:37 PM

Wow, that is awesome how they did that for you! That is a beautiful stained glass picture!

Barb M 05-19-2008 11:29 PM

Ooooh, the stained glass is awesome!

I've been working on an Attic Window Quilt also, my niece gave me the shark material and the Hawiian print and asked if I could make her a quilt, this is what I came up with and its not a hard one it goes together pretty fast as I made the squares 5" x 5"

amma 05-21-2008 06:53 AM

Beautifully done! Love the fabrics! :D :D

vicki reno 05-21-2008 10:05 AM

Amma: I tried using the half square triangles. Worked great! I did a test block but it sure beat those awful "Y" seams!

beachlady 05-21-2008 10:12 AM

Great job. All these attic windows makes me want to try one. I also saw an explanation the the 1/2 square for them looks much easier.

this is the attic window I've been working on for some time now.

Bill'sBonBon 05-25-2008 06:40 AM

Hello, I am doing or trying to do attic windows too. Each the internet for attic windows and came up with this site. :)
It actually works   :D :D :D . you have to follow the directions, then it is so simple. It is faster because you don't have to stop, look for the 1/4" for the Y seam. I hope I did this link correctly.
