I managed to cut back and forth cause the fabric was trhich and i felt the cutter wasnt sharp enough,,,,, well it mite not be sharp enough for those fabric layers but it was def sharp enough to make an inch wide and half inch deep wound in my knee
|
In your knee? How did you manage that? OUCH!!!!
|
Ouch, I finally bought a guard and a suchion handle. I have had too many friends that have cut themselves really bad.
But it wouldn't have helped for the knee. I have the same question. How did you do that? |

How did you do that? well i sat while i was cutting cause i have trouble standing and since i didnt feel it cut well enough when i cut from me i tried cutting back and forth and then it just slipped cause i was just a lot more tired than i thought i was    I know i have new blades somewhere,lol............................. |
So sorry to hear of the injury... who says sewing is a safe hobby ? Take care of that knee

Oh, do be wary of the falling rotary cutters! Hope you cleaned the wound carefully and are getting the rest you need! I think I have seen cautions on heavy machinery that say do not operate if you are taking medication, I think we need them on Rotary cutters as well! Do NOT operate while TIRED!
|
Ouch! poor you! I was in a quilt shop in England the other week and the man showed me a tip when cutting - put your little finger off the edge of the ruler on the mat, much less likely to slip. Don't know how you reached your knee though!

K x and yes its very well cleaned and i nearly needed stitches but mums a nurse and used somekind of strips to hold the wound edges close so there will be minimum of scaring but it does really hurt. i am so silly and my mum says well i told u so, i told u 2 stop argggggggggggggg  |
Dull blades are more dangerous than sharp.LOL
|
Be careful. Make sure you keep it clean and don't let it get infected!!!
I used to sit all the time while cutting as well, when I was cutting at my dining room table. Now I have a cutting table and it is at a good height for standing. |
BTW Nina - hope you didn't get blood on your fabric! LOL
K x |
It is a clear acrylic guard, that attaches to your ruler. They come in different sizes. I have seen them at different quilt shops. I think I also saw them a Beverly's which is a craft and fabric shop.

K x PS, shaverg do you have any pics? |
I've had several rotary cutter injuries. None as bad as yours sounds. But they hurt!
I've also tried to sew my finger. Fortunately it didn't break off in my finger - that could've been bad... Quilting/Sewing is not a safe "sport"... |
OUCH! That's no small cut.
DH has always told me a dull knife is more dangerous. I try to remember to wear shoes when cutting. Don't want to drop the darn thing on my foot! |
I know everyone has a fit about it but I still use my wall paper knife for most of my cutting It uses razor blades...I have never cut myself with it...but then my blades are about $10.00 per 100 so I change them often...I have several rotary cutters but darn they get dull fast. I also have nicked my fingers a lot...I'm just use to my little red :D Hope your finger heals fast

I did that once, it fell and hit my leg, still have the scar. Nice to know that I am not alone. Ninnie |
Ouch!!!! I've cut myself but never my knees.

A sharp blade usually cuts properly the first time. carrieg - says to wear shoes while cutting - another good idea. Hope you recover quickly from your cut. At least it was a "clean" cut. You probably bled profusely. I cut off the very end of my left middle finger. Still feels weird. |
Nina, sorry to hear about your injury! I hope all is well in a few days. I just purchased a new rotary cutter yesterday. Can you believe I broke one? The plastic slide thingy that retracts the blade broke, so the blade was unable to retract. I was so nervous using it that I went out the next day and bought a new one. I like the new one. It's an Olfa with ergonomic handle and the blade retracts automatically!
|
You are supposed to shave your legs NOT rotary cut them.
I notice that I don't get good leverage when I sit and cut. If I do, then the blades must be sharp. Hope you feel better. |
I always stress to cut away from you. I don't want anyone committing hari-kari in my presence. I don't do well with blood. They wouldn't want me to faint rather than be able to help them.
Take care of that wound. |
Take care and get better soon. Those rotary cutters can be dangerous. I love mine but an about half afraid of it.
|
My goodness....I hope all is better....next time if you must sit when you cut get you a table at Wal Mart....for 20.00 that is smaller than a card table kinda like a tv try that can adjust to different heights.....that is what I use... a great help when I"m tired....also I use the Olfa rotarys that close when they aren't squeezed.....I go bare footed and use to drop my other ones.....talk about dancing...:-)....glad I have the other kind now ...no worries.....:-)

i know i need new blades, i will also cut ONLY away from me,lol and i will use less fabric to cut through, its better taking it a bit more slow. also i need a bigger, better cutting mat, if u have anything to recomend please give me the link( and not to expensive) and yes i m getting better but it still hurts and the knee itself hurts a lot too, silly daft me    |
So far, I like the olfa mats best. I know they are expensive, but they do last a long time.

here is a couple photo's hope this helps....I also seen this table at Lowe's which is a home improvement sotre in the states......you could probabely look on line at the Wal Mart store....:-)....good luck
|
oh my goodness. i bought one of the cutters that close when not in use unless i punch the black button. i cut my thumb years ago and it took a long time for the nerves to stop bothering me. i love my rotary cutter now but i do make sure if i'm using my long ruler, that the side next to the cutter has the guard on it. I'd turned the ruler around and that's how i ended up getting cut! careful is the word of the day.

The self closing rotary cutters are helpful it one tends to be forgetful.
I tend to be. They are a a little more expensive, but i think they are worth it. |
While I have not cut myself with my rotary cutters (yet), I have run over my finger with a sewing machine.
Quilting can be a dangerous sport. :-) |
Hope you are feeling better..just the thought of cutting myself with the rotary cutter makes me shiver. My only time i cut myself was when i first got my rotary cutter.i thought i better show my teenage sons how sharp it is...i got a bit of material and started cutting and somehow dont ask me how the blade nicked my thumb and it felt like a red hot knife going through..luckily it was next to my nail so it didnt go very deep as the nail stopped it from going further..my sons to this day tease me about it and ask is there any other lessons i can give them! It must have worked as to this day which is several years since then my rotary cutter has not been touched and it sits on my sewing table in the lounge...
|
the guard on my 24 inch ruler is one you stick on. JoAnn's had them and other stores should. come in different lengths. i had my hubby cut one longer one and i used it on two rulers also.
here is one site with one https://www.danemco.net/secure/sewezquilting.com/?a=VP&id=147]https://www.danemco.net/secure/sewez...m/?a=VP&id=147[/url] |

We used to have the computer in my sewing room and one day when I was in the other room, our son, then in his early 30's and a computer geek was there to help his dad (not a computer geek) "fix" the computer. Well, son saw my rotary cutter laying on the cutting table (I had forgotten to close the blade  ) and he started playing with it running it between his fingers and he had cuts between each finger where it meets the palm of the hand. He then asked me "Hey, what is this thing anyway?". He has since learned not to play with "my toys" and we have put the computer in another room.
See, it is not just hazardous to the wellbeing of the quilters any more. |
Oh my word...that is horrible ...I did the same thing a few years ago..but it was to my finger...almost cut it off....I could not use my rotary for awhile..because I kept thinking about the day I cut it!!!! Are you okay? :-o
|
My cousin let her index finger sit just enough over the edge of the ruler that she sliced a chunk off as she zipped the rotary cutter up the ruler! It required several stitches, so she always wears those special gloves now! (They're available at Fons and Porter, I know, but probably other places, too!)
|
I know how that goes, I dropped mine off the cutting board, hit the top of my foot just over my big toe. DID NOT feel good!!!! Have the scar still.
|
Sorry to hear you got hurt. I hope you are feeling better.
Some common sense rules. 1.) Don't cut fabric when tired. 2.) Don't cut too much fabric. 6 layers max. 3.) Make sure the blade is sharp. 4.) If you are sitting down, make a protector quilt to put on your lap to keep your legs free of danger. It don't have to be pretty, just a couple layers of fabric to keep that edge away from your skin. 5. ALWAYS cut away from yourself. 6. Watch your fingers, 1/4 inch (6mm) over the edge of your ruler can make you just a bit shorter on one digit. 7.) Put the rotary cutter down, make sure it's retracted. I like my offset handle Olfa 60mm. Let the handle go, the blade automatically retracts. 8.) There is no number 8. 9.) Wine and rotary cutters don't mix. Iron instead. 10.) Maybe if you can't stand for long periods of time, get a tall stool to lean/sit upon. 11.) If in doubt, refer to number 1. tim (all ten fingers of him) in san jose |
After having a scalpel seam ripper come out of its sheath and stab me right through my notions bag I found a neat carry case that was the notion of the month at our fabric store quilters club. I too find it safer and easier with a good handle on the ruler, my preference is the new ruler gypsy stlye as they stay on the ruler better and it slips less. That rotary cutter must have slipped big time to hit your knee as most of us dont cut on our laps! Hope it healed well
