That is a good price. Wish I had the money right now to get the sets they are an awesome price.I have a Brother QC1000 and it pretty much likes what ever I put in it. Gutterman, Coats, Connecting Threads. But I do like variegated.

Anyway, I'm no thread expert, but is this what I should go with? Or are there some alternatives?

I use Aurifil a lot and love it. But I also use John Flynn's "So Fine". I have some huge cones I got at quilt shows. It's very smooth, fine and burys nicely inseams. You can also get smaller spools for a nice display! :)

PALS65 05-21-2010 04:47 AM

All I use is Aurafil. It lasts for every and I never have a problem with it.

Dkm 05-21-2010 05:55 AM

Surf the net. there are several places that sell at a discount. My quilt shop also recommends the same. I buy the light gray and use it in almost everything. Bottom line(light gray) in the bobbin. It's costly but it goes a long long way, wouldn't use anything else.
I have a 153 and have used Coats & Clark in it for years. Then bought a 640 tried using it and the lint was terrible and that ended that.

SNUGQUILT 05-21-2010 06:17 AM

I have a Bernina, and I use Superior thread, basically because I've found it to have less 'lint'. I'm going to try some Aurifil though! Thanks for the website for the discount! I do use Isacord for embroidery with Bottom Line in the bobbin.

OmaForFour 05-21-2010 06:18 AM

I see there is a 28wt, 40wt and 50wt Auriful. Which one do you use? What is the difference?
Right now I am using Guttermann and am going to try the Sulky polyester invisible thread on a project.

Most any thread will work. Aurifill is good but not necessarily the best. I have used all kinds including old thread in my Bernina and they work great. the suggestion about cost per yd or foot is a good one and is really economical in the long run to get the larger spools in those colors that you use the most of - light gray, white, off white, beige, etc. I have a friend who pieces with light gray and uses a large cone. don't let the shop secuce you into believing "there's is the only one". This has happened to me when I needed just a little of a color and bought a large spool that I used one time. The local quilt shop is a dumping spot for sewers and quilters cleaning out their threa

Holice 05-21-2010 06:23 AM

their thread collection and it included some 25 cent spools from Woodworth. It worked fine for what I was doing.

Michael: Do you know about another web site for men quilters. It is one of the Yahoo Groups under QuiltGuy.
Join us. Good conversation and exchange of info, ideas and fat quarters and even round robins.

Some machines are thread picky. I had a Singer that would not use Dual Duty. My HQ16 will only use Maxi Lock. Another site is atlantathread.com. It's a small company actually less than 20 miles from me. You can even pick up, but it's guaranteed same day shipping. Thread colors sitting out are very pretty, but they can collect dust very quickly.

I use the 50 wt. for piecing(thinner) THe 40wt. and 28 wt. would be used for quilting the quilt.

What a super site for thread......thank you! I have it bookmarked. I'm so tempted to order that 24 spool doorbuster set. Oh, the Devil is playing with me.....LOL!

THANKS! I will go to that site and take a peek. I agree about dust. I have enough of that to share if anyone is interested in some. LOL

Wow! Great price.. I love aurifil thread both for piecing and quilting, although I don't use it exclusively. Thanks for the info..

Good find! I have an Aurora 440QE and I use the threads I find at www.connectingthreads.com

This site was recommended to me on this board and I've had no trouble at all with it. When I took a class to use my embroidery module, the shop told me only to use OESD stabilizers--which, of course, they happen to sell. Since then I've learned of other less pricey stabilizers and they work just fine. A warning though, everything Bernina is pricey. It's good quality, but pricey nonetheless.

Quilting Nonnie 05-21-2010 07:42 AM

I used Aurifil exclusively for the first few years of quilting. Just a while back I ordered some of the sets from Connecting Threads and I really liked them. It's 50/3, Egyptian cotton and you get 20% discount when you buy a set. A single spool (1200 yds) is $1.99.

That is really a good price on their 24 spool case!!

Dodie 05-21-2010 08:24 AM

Guess I am the only different one here but I have a Pfaff 7550 and a Bernina 440QE and the both love the essentials threads from connecting threads order in lots they are big and come in lots of different colors I do all my quilting on my 2 machines and I use these threads both for piecing,
quilting and oh yes some applique too they are great threads and 1.99 a spool

BellaBoo 05-21-2010 08:50 AM

I read that the Genziana Cotton Mako thread is thought to be be better then Aurifil. I don't think it's sold anywhere in the US. The Tristan site sell it.

dixiechunk 05-21-2010 09:05 AM

I guess I am the odd man out here but Star Thread is my go to choice for piecing and machine applique. I use it on my Bernina 440 and all my vintage Singers. But maybe I will try aurifil next time I see some.

So Fine is a Superior Threads thread; they're having a special on shipping for retail accounts right now. Try me Specials has regular sized spools at a good discount; I didn't see Flynn's So Fine though

euclid 05-21-2010 10:35 AM

I'm sure they want you to buy the thread from them. I use aurifil a lot and it is awesome thread-very little lint shedding-never a slub or uneven spot-lots of length on the spool. However, there are many good quality threads on the market. Just make sure you clean and oil your machine often and you will be fine. (My Bernina shop pushes Aurifil as well.) Try one spool of aurifil when the store has a sale and you'll see why it has such a good reputation. Can find it much cheaper in common colors if you shop around the web.

GailG 05-21-2010 12:27 PM

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen Aurifil thread in stores. Of course that doesn't mean it's not out there. This thread has caused me to want ot go LQS-ping to look at the threads available locally.

I'm still trying to use up all of the threads I had purchased to go to the sewing school in Huntsville. I had bought every thread recommended on the shopping list. I use mostly neutrals for piecing -- creams, beiges, and grays.

Don't know if the shipping will make the difference, but it's $2.00 a spool less.

Hey, what, are we not good enough anymore?? What does that group have that we don't?

peaceandjoy 05-21-2010 02:01 PM

When I orderd from Tristans, I ordered 2 of the 24 spool boxes. Total, with shipping to US, was $110. A lot of money to sink into thread, yes - but since I use Aurifil anyhow and pay $9.50 - $10.50/spool locally, $2.30/spool was too good a deal to pass up. While I will use much of it myself, some spools will also be given to friends and probably a couple will end up in my guild Christmas package. I can't buy C&C for $2.30/spool, so I'm very happy!

Hmmm, wonder if there are women's only groups?? jk, jk.

Hi,
I hear Aurofil is a good thread, but yes, it is pricey. My Bernina dealer said I should use Mettler thread, which is less money but a smaller spool. I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

GIVE THE GUY A BREAK.

sewbeit 05-21-2010 03:42 PM

i also have a bernina 440 and i worked at a lqs..so i had an opportunity to try a variety of quality threads..i found aurifil to be the best..my machine loves it...lasts forever..will not break and no lint buildup either...i would suggest you try 1 of each..such as mettler..sulky..presentia..and so on..you willo be able to judge for your self..good luck..and nice machine you got there

tcnmom 05-21-2010 05:27 PM

Thanks for the website. Great prices.

April454 05-21-2010 05:56 PM

Last year I discovered Superior Masterpiece thread. I love it and now use it for all my piecing. The 3,000 yard spool seemed so expensive at about $25.00 but after a year of sewing I still have about a third of it left. I bought the off-white and can use it for most of my piecing. What I love about it is so little to no lint and the stitching is perfect. Some of the other threads I've used seem to be too thick and my stitches aren't as nice. I just invested in a couple of other colors for darker fabric. I know I'll not run out of thread for a very long time. It's worth every penny. My Bernina loves it. Now what to do with all the other threads I've bought over the past 6 years of quilting. I'm spoiled now.

April454 05-21-2010 05:58 PM

I also love Aurifil, it's excelent and definately goes a long way.

Sorry I can't help. God bless. Penny

Suzy 05-21-2010 06:50 PM

I have some aurifil thread and some other brands too. I do have to say of those that I use, aurifil is by far the better thread of choice. It doesn't build up much lint and it doesn't take up any space in the seam allowance like some other threads even tho they are 50# threads can make the quarter inch seam more bulky? I don't know how else to describe it. It is very pricey but worth not having to clean the bobbin area very often. The other one I like is mettlers silk finish works somewhat like aurifil but doesn't seam to get the mileage you get with aurifil. Just my personnel opinion.

Suzy

reach for the stars 2 05-21-2010 06:52 PM

I think it's to pricey and my Janome and Viking didn't like it. I do use Gutterman a lot I like that.

dlf0122quilting 05-21-2010 07:26 PM

Check out www.sewforless.com because they have a great sale on it for $2.50 for a 5,000 meter spool in many different colors.

I couldn't find Aurifil listed for sale at the site you linked to...

Lizzygail 05-21-2010 09:17 PM

I love to use the Aurifil for batiks. Gives a nice small footprint for a crisp seam with the dense fabric - otherwise, I'm not overly choosy about my piecing thread 'brand' other than getting a nice 'twist' so it doesn't shread.
