Baby quilt layout?

I Finally sat down and started a project! :) I haven't sewn any blocks yet because I'm not 100% sure I like where some of the colors ended up. Overall though, I really like the way this is coming along! I think my daughter will love it!

Since this will be my first quilt, I could use some advice.
Does the fabric have enough balance? (Big, small, light, dark, placement, etc?)
Should it have a border, or just binding?

I think it is beautiful your colors are great. Can’t wait to see it done. For a beginner you are doing great

Looks lovely! The only thing, I might audition a little stronger value colour on the light grey bottom left triangles.

Beautiful quilt block. If you have a smart phone, take a picture of the block. Edit the photo to be black and white. You will be able to see the contrast between the fabrics that make up the star and those that make up the background around the star. If you see areas that blend too much for lack of contrast, change that fabric to a lighter or darker shade. Keep us posted on your progress. You are doing great!

You're doing great for a first project! You've got a lovely star going, but I would replace the bottom left pink/grey block and make it a pink/stronger color block as Tartan suggests.

Looks good. I think it will need a border.

I agree. All the star legs need to have the same value. That grey look more like a background color. It's a beautiful pattern, I love it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! Biggest reminder - do not try for perfection, go easy on yourself. With each project you will learn and you will get better. I have been quilting for over 40 years (sewing for over 60) and I still learn things with each project! With this top, your colors are fine. I might suggest switching the 2 on the left, move the dark grey/blue to the lower left corner and the light grey/pink to the upper left corner. Then leave the room and re-enter a few times. How does it look to you? This is why we audition fabrics/blocks/borders. Does it look better to you than the first one? If not, move it back - YOU ARE THE BOSS! Other than the 1/4" seam rules, there really are no rules and you get to decide on what is right or wrong and you'll learn what works and what doesn't. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

It looks good. I think a border would look nice.
