Changed the design a bit. Well, not a whole lot...got rid of the compass and added a border around the map part. I like this better...the compass created a lot of room on the right side, which is where they put an image of the controller to tell you what buttons to what when you bring up the map and how many sub-maps you have...crap that I don't want on this map, but when I got rid of it had a huge amount of space to fill in.

Trying to look for some sort of border to add in the corners of the quilt. Possibly Celtic knotwork...haven't found anything I like yet.

Still don't know how big my islands are going to be or how I'm going to add them in. I think applique is out of the question...I think if I do a decent sized wall hanging they might end up being too small to do so. And I just suck at applique...I've tried and I'm just not getting the hang of it. The only way I have thought of to get the islands onto the fabric is to screen print or print them onto fabric with a computer printer...and I don't know how to do either. Well, I kind of know how to screen print, but getting the design onto the screen is the part I don't know how to do. As far as size goes, 1/24 of the block might not work at all...have to test it out, but maybe something like 1/12 or something smaller than to scale, but still indicating "big sea, small islands".

I think I want a different font for "The Great Sea". Might add island names depending on how it looks.

Could you fuse the islands on and then zig-zag the edges?

Even if you just straight stitch at the edges after fusing, lots less complicated than trying applique. Wonder Under or anything like that is not terribly expensive and you just use bits of it--the size say of your islands or the samlll pieces you would want on the map. I wouldn't beginn to know how to print on fabric. I am doing good just to answer messages on the board. Thats about as complicated as I can get with a computer! :lol:

At this point I'm not sure if applique would even be a possibility. Because of the even sized borders the actual map had to get smaller...I think. For the moment the finished blocks for the map are 6", the map border is 1.5" wide, and the outer border is 6". The space the islands have to fit in is 2", which is bigger than actually putting it to scale, but still is pretty small to applique. I really can't go any bigger for my block size because the quilt is already like 57x57...in that respect I can't go any smaller to make the quilt smaller or my islands will be too small even with the new sizing.

Maybe you could embroider the islands. Satin stitch?
Or paint them with fabric paint?

Besides cross stitching, I'm no good with embroidery. And I don't have one of those fancy machines that would do it for me...I can imagine it would be a pain trying to program the machine to do 49 different island designs.

Fabric paint? Its not a bad idea, but I don't think I'd like the effect the paint for this quilt. It would...I can't think of the word...where the design is raised. Anyways, the islands wouldn't be flat and I want more of a map-like feel to it. And in my experiance with fabric paint, when doing large areas, I can never get the paint to go evenly.

I'm really liking the screen printing/silk screening idea. I kind of remember how to do it...basically just a wooden frame with a fine mesh on it and you place it on the fabric, put the ink on one side of the mesh, and swipe it through with a sqee-gee type thing. But I don't remember exactly how the design was transfered onto the mesh. There's the "traditional" way of doing it where you put a stencil of your design over the fabric, but there's a way you can get the design transfered directly onto the mesh. I can remember bits and pieces of it. The design was transfered onto those plastic sheets they use for overhead presentations, put onto the mesh, and some sort of stuff was put onto the mesh (I just remember it being neon green) and I think a light was shined through...something like that...but the stuff that was applied mesh would stick to the mesh and when you washed it off it wouldn't come off except where your design was. I've been trying to find a website that would show me how to do that, but I've only found one...and its video demenstrations...never will be able to see them with my internet connection so I don't even know if its what I'm looking for.
