If you didn't read my other post a while back, I want to make a quilt for a friend of the family who was diagnosed with throat cancer last year.
Pic of quilt design: The idea I had for colors was to use green and yellow since he loves the Packers. I think I want the main blocks to be green on green and then the blocks that are on point to be yellow on yellow. (was too lazy to do a yellow one on point) Last time I posted about this quilt a few people pointed out that I shouldn't use a white background because it shows dirt and dust more easily and if he takes it to treatments it might get stained (blood, IV fluids, etc). But I can't think of what would work with this color scheme and also take into consideration of possible hospital related stains. Except black, but I don't want to go with black (for once! Usually I'm in support of all things black!) Think its just a little too striking for this quilt and using black for this is kind of depressing. Ideas? |
I say go for the color scheme and the stains can and will wash out some of the draws are done before they are realy seated to have the infusion of drugs so it won't get messy. once they are seated or laying down the quit will be fine. My moms quilt held up just fine.

Maybe you could use a beige tone on tone for the background. That should hide any minor stains.
|
I say use the yellow, if those are his colors, then go for it.
|
How about a light grey?
|
mottled blue would go with both blocks ?rich blue as the squares----white is too stark--
|
Nothing got on my dad's quilt form treatments, so it wasn't a problem. I did have to wash his a bit more often, just becuse it traveled back and forth so much - but no matter the color, you'd still need to do that (else you'd stil be carrying a dirty quilt regardless of color...eewwww).
Use what goes with the color scheme to make him happy - and don't worry about the washing. After all, you're making it for him to use, not to put up and save...right? Debbie in Austin |
Maybe a mottled yellow for both BGs, but a darker on 1/2 & lighter on other 1/2. Something like Moda marbles. Comes in lots of colors/shades.
|
What if you found a fabric that contained the greens and yellows for a background. Maybe something swirly, or like a batik or tie died?
|
Love the Packers too! go for the white and yellow!!!!!!
If itstains a little, so what. its the love in the quilt that matters. |
Have you considered a small print floral in the white areas? A solid tan would work too.
I like the white but just offering another solution. Good luck with it. |
Gold with a tinge of tan in it? Still the Packers color, but maybe a little more masculine, and it would be easier to keep a clean look.
|
My only suggestion is maybe a flannel backing b/c I heard treatments make people cold.
What a nice thing you're doing :) |
There's no rule that says you have to use all one background color. Use the yellow background on the green stars and the green background on the yellow stars. A lot of teams also have a third color. Check and see what the Packers third color is and maybe use it.
|
What about a dark gray? not quite black but will still allow the green and yellow to stand out.
|
Creamy mottled fabric like the Moda Marbles would be my choice. I'm not a fan of white unless there's no choice.
|
Might also want to make a matching bag, doesn't have to be pieced, just the same fabric. If possible, line it with a slippery fabric so the quilt slides in and out easily.
|
I say use yellow, too. ANY color will show stains!!!! If you look hard enough!

what about a mottled or marbled yellowish green? I did that on my hunter's star with a very barely green batik (almost white) and I love the look!

I think the advice about making the quilt totally washable is good. One of the dangers of chemo is being so vulnerable to infection. Unfortunately hospitals and clinics aren't the most germ-free places. Having said that, I would have loved a quilt to take with me to treatments and especially to the hospital when the doctor put me in isolation because of an infection. I called it protective custody!:)

I would consider using a gray fabric. I think it would work well with the green and yellow fabrics you have chosen.
|
WOW, that is beautiful!!!!!! I would go with the white, it really makes it "pop".
What pattern is that, would you mind sharing it? Very, very beautiful!!! |
I believe Wal MArt has Packers fabric
|
gorgeous - my daughter is undergoing chemo and she still likes the look of things crisp and nice, so I would go with the white.
By the way, could you please tell me the names of your blocks - absolutely beautiful! Thanks Darlene |
I'd go with white if that pleases you most. Pale beige or grey would also work.
Were it I, I'd go with pale grey. It's going to be beautiful whatever you choose. |
I know a lot of people have suggested gray. I think it will look more like a John Deere quilt if you use gray or black. I would go with the white since it is the color of the uniforms. Green, gold and white.

How about football print? Brown goes with yellow and green.
|
How about a tan color?
|
Regular hydrogen perxoide right out of the bottle and put on blood will remove it. Learned this from my best friend who is a R.N. then wash as usual. Perxoide just eats up protein which is blood. It does not bleach out any other color. It will even work on dried blood. Best wishes for your friend.
