I saw a woman at my guild last night who had taken a class where they made a bag from a square quilt. It was folded in such a way that one corner of the quilt ended up covering the opening of the bag and the other corners formed pockets on the outside (and maybe the inside?). I wonder if anyone has seen this bag and knows of a pattern it. (I could ask the woman, but I don't know her name and left the meeting without hunting her down.)

Don't know but it sounds interesting!
|
I would love to see it. Never heard of a pattern like that. Next time you see her you have got to ask about the bag.
|
That sounds so interesting. I just can't picture it. I hope you see her again and can get a pattern. Keep us posted.

I think it is called Sunday Sachel. I have it at home, but haven't made it yet.

Try this website. I think this is the pattern you are looking for. Good luck!

I saw this bag being made at a LQS. A quilted square of any size was folded and stitched to form pockets on the inside and flaps on the outside. I bought the pattern. Check you PM.

The pattern is Jiffy Totes
from Pearl Louise Designs. I posted about how easy this patten was to make a few days ago but Admin took it off the main board. |

my LQS had this pattern a while back.... they were giving away the directions if you bought the material. I didn't need the material as I wanted to use my stash, but I looked at the bag they had and kinda made my own from memory.
I sewed strips together and quilted it so it actually came out a little smaller than I wanted (duh, forgot to allow for shrinkage due to quilting - LOL). I gave it to my granddaughter for last Christmas.... she loves it! reversable pink/purple purse |
Thats a really neat bag!

Great bag! It's very similar, if not the same bag. The one she had was larger. I suppose it all depends on the size quilt you use. I've been looking for a simple bag to carry actual quilts in--even large ones--when I go to my guild meetings. It's not all that important, but it might be classier than a plastic bag from Joann's.
As I told BellaBoo in my PM to her, I'm always amazed at the ingenuity and generosity of people on this board. |
The one I know how to make is called an Origami Purse - same concept I guess. Use a square or rectangle double sided quilt or quilted one you make yourself and turn like a diamond, fold bottom up, sew down each side, flip corners over the center, fold flaps down in front and back and add straps! You can make them any size.

I made one for Halloween once. It was easy to do. I didn't have a pattern my LQS told me how to make it.
After Halloween I unpicked it and used it as a table cover. |

thanks, i was about to order a jacket pattern from Nancy's notions. will get the bag one also.
|
I think both patterns are put together the same way. The purse may have used firmer batting. The bag uses cotton batting and has drawstrings added to form the bag. I'm making lots of the bags to sell at our guild table at a quilt show. My DD took the one I made her to work and said the girls there all wanted to buy one. If they want one they'll have to come to the quilt show.

i got the pattern from Nancy's notions but think i'll return it. printed the jiffy tote instructions instead. the pattern isn't very detailed, so i see no reason to pay for it.
