JUNEC 02-23-2011 07:14 PM

really as good as everyone is saying?

I noticed that Joann Fabric has June Taylor Basting Spray 12 oz can is on sale - for $5.49.

Is it worth trying? What does everyone feel are the pros and cons of using this instead of pins.

Thanks

sandyo 02-23-2011 07:15 PM

I looove it

Maggiemay 02-23-2011 07:19 PM

I love it too. Just make sure to protect the areas around your quilt (floors, tables) from overspray with newspaper or sheets. I do a bit of pinning with it, but my quilting has much improved with the spray for my quilt sandwiches.

Qbee 02-23-2011 07:21 PM

uh-oh....the can is open...here comes the worms...LOL http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...um/popcorn.gif

I love basting spray ,I;m trying to finish a quilt that I pin basted, never again

Bottle Blonde 02-23-2011 07:25 PM

I love basting spray! The trick to using the June Taylor spray is to shake it really well. Shake with one hand until your arm is tired...then shake in the other hand until that arm is tired! Then it is perfect! After you spray - let it rest a few minutes to get tacky before you begin layering the quilt sandwich.

erstan947 02-23-2011 07:26 PM

Love, love, love it!:)

charmpacksplus 02-23-2011 07:28 PM

Yep! It can be messy but it sure beats pinning.

thepolyparrot 02-23-2011 07:29 PM

Yes, you do have to shake the June Tailor one til your arm is tired - a full two minutes!

I basted six quilts in two days a couple weeks back and even though I was very careful about aiming the spray, I have a mist on virtually everything in my living room, including my glasses, which were sitting on a shelf two feet above and five feet away from my basting table. That's not so funny, and I will never use it in my house, again - only in the garage.

But, it is SUCH an easy way to baste - I wouldn't give it up! And that price is really great - I think I paid $11.49 each for the last two cans I bought.

LindaM 02-23-2011 07:30 PM

I love the basting spray too!

Be sure to ventilate well! One of our guild members managed to get a good dose of the fumes and ended up very very sick.

JUNEC 02-23-2011 07:48 PM

So there is no pinning needed

Goldie 02-23-2011 07:53 PM

I love it too, but I do prefer the 505. It is pricey, but it has much less odor and I think is very forgiving of re placing and delays in getting the quilt done. Patsy Thompson recommends and she knows her stuff!

quiltingcandy 02-23-2011 07:54 PM

I love it too - but I always need another person to help me to avoid unwanted wrinkles and we wear dust masks to keep the glue from going up the nose. The ventilation is important also, but the mask is very beneficial.

Lilrain 02-23-2011 07:55 PM

you need to tape down your backing, and make sure to be in a well ventilated area. Not good for asthmatics though

I also prefer the 505. I've used Sullivans, June Taylor and 505 and all work, but I prefer the 505 for less smell and easier placement. I will never pin a quilt again!

Blue Bell 02-23-2011 08:10 PM

I highly recommend it.

purplemem 02-23-2011 08:22 PM

I love the 505 and buy the big cans from jhittle.

I use a few pins, just because. . . . But make sure that where ever you spray it, have GOOD ventalation. I have asthma, and that stuff just about kills me, but it works great!!

BETTY62 02-23-2011 09:25 PM

Thanks for the tip. I will try this product.

justlooking 02-24-2011 03:19 AM

I love it!

teacherbailey 02-24-2011 03:23 AM

I can't find a con except maybe that it's messy when being sprayed. I spray on a tarp (used just for this) in the driveway on a non-windy day. And walk on the three layers when they're together with sock feet.....I have absolutely no problems with quilting later. I really like it since it's FAST!!!!!

dilyn 02-24-2011 03:34 AM

I LOVE it!

lynnsv 02-24-2011 03:40 AM

I love it, but for bigger quilts, I still pin, too

weatheread 02-24-2011 04:44 AM

Its great just keep away from machines when spraying

DirtyPaw 02-24-2011 05:35 AM

If you can find a way to baste outdoors I would do that. It will be better for your lung health and easier to clean up any mistakes. Garage can be a good area with the door open if you have a table to set you stuff on.

Minnisewta 02-24-2011 05:41 AM

I love it and I lay the quilt on a BIG old sheet to avoid overspray.

hobbykat1955 02-24-2011 05:41 AM

I'll be the one 'no"...too messy, need to go outside to do so I'd rather just pin or use fusible batting...

msawicki64 02-24-2011 05:54 AM

I'm glad I clicked on the second page of this thread because you answered my question. Also I like your idea of doing on a big tarp. That's what I'm going to do on my next big quilt.

Nope. no pins required. I usually pin the edges anyway so they won't get stretched with all the handling. I also prefer to use the spray outside because it will make a mess in the house and the fumes are obnoxious.

Jeanniejo 02-24-2011 05:57 AM

Love it !! Gave my pins away !!!

Arleners 02-24-2011 05:57 AM

I only like 505 basting spray. June taylor spray smells too much for me.

Jeanne Fauss 02-24-2011 06:01 AM

I bought a can of basting spray but for my last quilt I was afraid to use it. I am new to quilting, and sandwiching it is so difficult for me. I would love to see a tute for doing this step. This last top was hard to center for some reason. I was wondering if there is a method of doing it. Maybe it was the static in the air, because once I placed it, it wouldn't shift easy, and I kept getting my borders short on one side or the other....know what I mean. Maybe I was concerned about the backing looking square as it was always looking tilted. I hope I'm making sense.

Jagsd3 02-24-2011 06:13 AM

I both always spray and pin. Then thru out quilting when on my domestic after I have quilted so far re-adjust if needed and pin some more.

grannypat7925 02-24-2011 06:42 AM

I just paid $12.99 at JoAnn's. Haven't used this brand before, but I do use basting spray a lot and love it.

pollyjvan9 02-24-2011 06:43 AM

Spray baste is the only way I baste. I use any brand, whatever I find on sale. I really can't tell the difference.

Shirlrh 02-24-2011 06:48 AM

I really like it also. Need to be very careful of the overspray. I use lots of newspapers.

abc123retired 02-24-2011 07:00 AM

I love it! The only problem is figuring out where to do it especially when the quilt is large.

Holice 02-24-2011 07:16 AM

get a small can and try it. you may or may not like it.

Holice 02-24-2011 07:20 AM

it appears that space to do it is always the problem.

Mkotch 02-24-2011 07:34 AM

OK, I'll be contrary and say I absolutely hate it. It gets all over everything - your hair, the room, etc. Do it outdoors when there is no breeze.
