I understand it's because the smooth side has a scrim, and that helps prevent the batting from poking through to the back, besides keeping the batting from bunching, separating, etc.

I was wondering about doing something like that but was afraid it might bleed to the front of the quilt. If I just lightly touch it on there will it be ok?
