batting from JoAnn's???

did anyone buy the batting JoAnn"s had on sale in a big roll around Christmas time? I bought two rolls it is 60 wide by 20 yards and was like 49.00 I think, so it was like 2.50 a yard.. I finally opened and wow it is ever thin, it said on the package ..Value 60..lightweight Poly 7 lbs..I don't know if I should use it as is or double it, which will not have saved me any money on buying this batting

Dose anyone use this batting for there quilts? single

patski 01-31-2016 08:35 PM

one of the employees at JoAnns told me not to buy it. I buy a big roll for 1/2 off just after Christmas and that lasts all year. I only use the warm & natural

quiltlady1941 01-31-2016 08:37 PM

I wish someone would have told me not to buy it, but I have it and will have to use it ..thnaks for your reply..

Bummer. Sorry. I bought Warm and Natural too. It was recommended from a few people so I tried it, loved it and am sold.

pojo 01-31-2016 10:31 PM

I only buy warm and Natural too.

LavenderBlue 02-01-2016 02:22 AM

You could probably return it for a refund....I would certainly try.

toverly 02-01-2016 04:03 AM

I think I remember that sale, what brand did it say it was? I stick with warm and natural but I have been tempted before with other rolls. I would see how doubling it would work on a small piece.

Aurora 02-01-2016 04:11 AM

Due to lack or storage space, I only purchase packaged batting and only Warm and Natural. I am definitely a batting Snob.

quilterpurpledog 02-01-2016 04:21 AM

I most always use Hobbs 80/20 and have never had poor results. When I want to do a really special project I use silk or wool-also Hobbs brand. I use packaged batting because of storage space. I am always very skeptical of "special sales". They most often are inferior products in some way.

Sandra-P 02-01-2016 05:08 AM

Darn, I don't like that when you buy something and then when you finally open it find it is not up to par. I love Quilters Dream batting. When I first started out I used Warm and Natural and still use it for some projects but find the QD is so nice to use.

mike'sgirl 02-01-2016 06:08 AM

I'm not sure what you bought , but a friend and fellow quilted showed me some thin poly batting at JoAnn's, and said she reached liked it. Said its very light and very warm. Maybe its the same stuff.

luvstoquilt 02-01-2016 06:27 AM

I love Warm and Natural and Hobbs 80/20. I am in a hand quilting group and just worked on on with wool batting (Hobbs) and it was great to work with.

susie-susie-susie 02-01-2016 07:06 AM

I use Warm & Natural all the time--I love it. I usually buy 20 yards or more that are 90 inches wide. It lasts me a long time and I use a coupon at JA so I only pay for 10 yards. I usually need 2 yds for a quilt. If I make a quilt with a lot of white I would use Warm & White, but I don't use a lot of white.

I bought a roll of this stuff:
http://www.joann.com/pellon-siliconi.../11976487.html
It's the same dimension roll as you quoted and was the same price, but don't know if it's the same stuff. Needs to be quilted 4" apart. It is thin, but the thickness is consistent and I rather like it. It quilts easily, the amount loft shows the quilting and drapes well. I used a single layer. Wouldn't use it on an heirloom quilt, but for kid's draggers or home dec (runners, toppers etc.) it works well. I would make up a practice sandwich, quilt it, and see if you have a change of heart before you discard it all together.

NoraB 02-01-2016 07:30 AM

I would also try to return it. They probably won't give you a refund, but hopefully, they will give you a credit and you can purchase the batting you really want...Warm & Natural. Good luck!

I would also try and return it. Maybe you could take it to a local Joanns and make an exchange?

This is the batting that I bought, I am always looking for a bargain but I think this time I didn't get one. I don't have the receipt as I bought it back in Dec, so I will just have to use it..most of the quilts I make are ones that I give away, but still want them to look good, I'll try and see how two layers will look, Thanks everyone , but don't buy this batting even tho it looks like a good deal..

kylenstevesmom 02-01-2016 09:36 AM

I bought a roll similar to this several years ago and I really lIke it. I use it for baby and kids quilts and no one has complained yet...

mom-6 02-01-2016 09:44 AM

There are times when a thinner batting can be just what you need, but it's really disappointing if you were expecting sonething different.
Can you exchange it?

Same here, after quilting I didn't notice a difference. My quilts are made with love and are loved. That is good enough for me.

garysgal 02-01-2016 10:15 AM

I bought some of it in the past and still have a lot left over. I use it for tablerunners or wall hangings or rag quilts. Sometimes you make a quilt that needs a thin batting and this will work.

jazs2 02-01-2016 10:28 AM

They use to sell Hobbs, but the quality that they sold was seconds so Hobbs discontinued doing business because they didn't want their brand to be like that.

This quilt is going to Florida so maybe a thinner quilt will be fine and I will use the rest for baby quilts..I have the quilt clamped down to the table ready to pin for FMQ, it does seen thinner then I am use to but I hope it will be fine after I quilt it..

No, the batting I bought is different. It came in a box clearly marked with the Pellon brand. Looks like this is made by Fairfield.

lynnie 02-01-2016 11:19 AM

I've used it and I never had a problem with it. I have even a thinner one on my bed, hand quilted and it's fine in the winter and summer. the one on sale, I've machine quilted and haven't had any problems with it. worked up great.

ManiacQuilter2 02-01-2016 02:43 PM

I only buy Hobbs 80/20. Just bought a roll 120" wide on eBay for my Xmas present so I can get some of these charity tops quilted by our LAQ at church. I was taught by Harriet Hargrave to always buy the best fabric, batting and thread that you can afford.

Reba'squilts 02-02-2016 04:26 AM

They usually let you return things. Buy the w&n with a 50% coupon. I buy some off the roll or the packages. I do not have enough space for a whole roll. Good luck.

grann of 6 02-02-2016 05:09 AM

I have gotten this batting several times. I have a longarm and do lots of charity quilting. It works great on the longarm, makes a nice lightweight quilt. You don't have to quilt super dense, so it comes out nice and soft after washing. For larger quilts I use Hobbs 80/20 by the bolt.

Karamarie 02-02-2016 05:29 AM

Oh - I hate it when things go on sale and the quality is less or it is expired (food items). The old saying I guess is true - buyer beware. Ugh!

I have used ONLY Warm and Natural cotton - it is warm and cool! Holds together very well and like the old saying that goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I usually buy when I need (it's my luck I'll croak if I buy a roll!) Would love to say "I bought a roll of Warm and Natural". Sounds so rich!!!!!!!! Hold off on the batting you bought for table runners or baby blankies (they outgrow them) and save the special quilts for the W&N. Now if you will excuse me, have to head out shopping before the big one hits us!!!!!!! Sometime after lunch! Edie

Here is some information on how Batting is described: Polyester batting thicknesses are 10 oz is 1" (one inch) thick. 6 oz is 1/2 inch. 8 oz is 3/4 inch, and 4 oz is 3/8 inch. The thin batting is for garments, such as for the lapels of jackets and coats. BE AWARE of what you are buying. TALK to the clerks. When buying online, ASK QUESTIONS, and get answers before you buy.

shasta5718 02-02-2016 07:02 AM

I have bought that batting and it was ok. Not as good as the more expensive, but it did work and My son has a quilt made od it and it washes well.

If you've already cut the batting, it's not returnable. Anything sold that has a measurement will be re-measure and a refund will be given only with the original receipt

pocoellie 02-02-2016 07:25 AM

I believe I have used the same batting, bought a couple rolls actually, because of the price. It quilted up fine and although I would prefer the 100% or 80/20%, I can't justify the price for quilts that I donate.

Jo Anne B. 02-02-2016 08:13 AM

When I took my Learn to Quilt class we used 100% polyester(it was donated) It was horrible. I have tried Hobbs 80/20, I was not impressed with it and I know it is a favorite on this board. My favorite is the Warm and Natural too, which I purchase at JAF's with coupons. I am eager to try Hobbs wool batting and Quilters Dream varieties.
If it were me I would try to return it, if that didn't work I would donate it to charities who quilt for donation.

rjwilder 02-02-2016 08:14 AM

The back of the JoAnn receipt states it will make a refund at the most recent lowest selling price of the item if you do not have the receipt. Since you purchased it at a low price you might want to try to return it. Also, there is no date stating a time limit for returns on the receipt. I have cut fabric and then returned it because it was flawed and received a full refund. I've even prewashed fabric and it shrank so much I returned it and received a refund. I always deal with the manager, am polite and have no problems getting refunds with or without receipts.

quiltlady1941 02-02-2016 09:51 AM

I have use warm and natural ones a long time ago [I think someone bought it for me] and it was great quilting but it is a little costly, but now after getting this batting for a deal I think I need to rethink on what I buy from now on.. I'll have to keep track of the coupons fro JoAnn's and make sure I get some of the good stuff.. I'll use this for some of the baby quilts that go to the hospital and some table runners..Thanks for all of your help..

Warm and Natural seems kind of thin does it puff up after washing it, or is there different weights in that as with the Poly

This is excellent information! Thanks. I've cut and pasted it so I don't lose it.

QuiltnLady1 02-02-2016 10:39 AM

I have used that batting -- it is good for light weight quilts (with foot problems I have to be careful about the weight of my quilts) and because it is poly it is warm. I prefer Warm and Natural and Hobbs 80/20 but if I have a blanket and a quilt on my bed I need light and this worked. It washes well (though I don't use hot water).

Last fall they introduced Warm & Plush. It's 100% cotton, no scrim & it's about half again as thick as the W&N. I like it a lot. Because it has no scrim, it needs to be quilted much more closely than W&N, I think it's 4" vs. the 10" for W&N.
