I use 80/20 for placemats. My favourite is Hobbs 80/20 fusible.

With placemats or table runners, I use the wine glass test. Would a fine glass get tippy? So most of the time I used flannel. I wash it in very hot water and dry it thoroughly to make it hit the maximum shrinkage. (I am not one who usually pre-washes, but it is critical for this) This gives them just a bit of cushion without any bulk.

Do you use the sew in or fusible? I think the fusible stays flatter.

I have used a very thin polyester batting that actually was created for quilted clothing.....I can't remember the name of it I think it was made by hobs Thermore® yep that is the name….just found it...

Hello, I like to use a product called Thermore, it is lightweight and has always passed the wine glass test.

Since I found Soft & Stable (also comes as a fusible) I’ve been hooked on it for placemats. They even sell a package set of 4 already cut for placemats.

I use Pellon Deco Bond. My place mats are very flat. Here is runner that I made that still needs quilting. I put it on the table to keep it flat and wrinkle free. Here are some place mats I made for plates only we use in the breakfast room. They are not quilted.

Couldn't get two pictures in one post. Here are the easy placemats.
