My first and second quilts were crazy 9 patches. Nothing was supposed to match up and didn't!! Loved it! The second one I must have left out a step cuz all corners did match! Funny....but fun! I've not done the Yellow Brick Road, but it might be a good one too. I'm really into 9 patches, though! I did two disappearing 9 patches that were a hoot! A lot of fun to do! I'm doing something "my style" this time around. It probably has a name somewhere but I've not seen it done and just dreamed it up, literally!! Have fun, don't stress and get 'er done!!!

After my grand daughter learned to make a straight 1/4 seam. she made a turning twenty top. she loved it and was so pround of it. she was 10 when she made it . So was easy for a beginner.

So many of you have these cute little animals etc that move on your posts like the one of the kitty with the ball of yarn.
I would like to know how to do that. Can anyone help me? |
Baby take 3 or take 5. It uses good size block and can be done is 3 hours, 5 for the take 5.
|
Yellow Brick Road was my first and I really enjoyed making that pattern. Was not difficult at all.
|
I made the Philadelphia Pavement Block Quilt for my first quilt and didn't have any trouble with it. http://quilting.about.com/od/blockof...ck-pattern.htm
|
I have done the disappearing 9 patch and it is fun and easy, but don't count out BQ. Several good things about BQ: Large pieces, easy instructions but the best is you will impress everyone because it doesn't look like a beginners quilt pattern. Everyone will think you've been quilting for years.

Would YBR work as a table runner?
|
I hear you talking about:
Turning Twenty & Warm Wishes Will someone please post a pic or pattern of these. |
My first was a nine-patch and rail. I had no problems and I ended up with a quilt I'm proud of.

BQ probably stands for Baby Quilt
|
Does anyone have a picture of Yellow Brick Road? I am not familiar with it.
|
You could try the one I did for my daughter (below).
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-60895-1.htm It was very easy, the blocks were large and it took very little time. (I did make a queen where the pattern called for a lap quilt). It's from Pat Sloan's book "I can't believe I'm quilting beyone the basics" here is the book on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Sloans-Believe.../dp/1601406827 What ever you decide, I wish you the very best! It's great fun! |
Nine patch is good.
|
I found the friendship star to be quite easy. I make my blocks so they are 12" x 12".

My first quilt was a 9 patch. That was so long ago that I don't remember if my corners lined up or not, probably not. How about a 4 patch alternated with a -plain block of the same size. Plain blocks like that can be surprisingly attractive.

I like rail fence. Your focus there is on sewing a consistent seam and cutting accuratly. I think that is enough skills to practice for a new quilter.

Let me know what you think and if you found anything.OK? Good luck  |
OKAY I'm new too. What is BQ?
|
I think BQ may mean a quilt patteren company....maybe referring to Big Quilt Blocks....not really sure...on page 3 of this thread was a referrance to the BQ.....but it could mean Beginner Quilter....or even Baby Quilt....would be nice if it was expalained....especially if you are new to quilting....I'm no expert but I would like to know what they mean too.....:-)....I is confussed....
I also think the nine patch is a good beginner just because you are to work on getting your seems to match...and if you learn the method of pressing to the inner or outtie....it can help...it gets you ready for the next step in quilting...but most important have fun and enjoy....hope you do...the ladies and gentlemen are here to help if need be.... :-) |
I am fairly new myself I made the nine patch and it was very easy.
I have made one throw and twelve more blocks. This site is a great place to get answers. I love reading the comments. Thanks to all. |
www.youtube.com is a great place place to watch video tutorials.
|
When you find your pattern, Break it down to smaller parts. ( ie make 4, 6, 8, etc. sections of the quit first, then put them all together.) Happy sewing.
|
I also think short stacks is an easy pattern that uses fat quarters.
|
Start with a small quilt for yourself, and pick the fabrics you really like. This way you will finish the quilt.
Lots of pattern ideas, and really nice when you have an internet address for a pattern |
for retired 2pa... would love to see your avatar up close.. what is the name of that quilt please?

The first quilt I made was rail fence... nothing is easier than that... just sewing three or four different strips together then cutting them to the same length as the width... turned out lovely... |
My first quilt was a 9-patch at a quilting class. It turned our awful because of the fabrics I picked out. I went to another quilt shop, got some solid fabric for blocks and lots of help from the shop owner. It took me 3 years to finish it but it is on our bed now and I'm proud of it. (Costs an arm and a leg too to get it quilted.) If I had it to do over I'd try a rail fence first. Take classes if you can afford them. It really helps and your confidence will build quickly.

Joy...I got the pattern from e-patternscentral.com. It's called Diamonds Bargello. It was my first bargello and I only had a small amount of batik in my stash so I only did 17 rows across out of 28.
Glad you like it :) |
BQ stands for "Big Quilt". There are several versions of this...BQ, BQ2 and BQ3. You can find these patterns for sale at www.mapleislandquilts.com. You can make the quilt in different sizes and the pattern also includes BBQ, which (hee, hee!) stands for "Baby Big Quilt".
