I have four different colors and each have 1 1/2-2 yards each. I am a beginner quilter and would ask your help with an easy pattern you can recommend. Do you think larger blocks would be better? I want something that is not difficult so I don't get discouraged. Thanks so much!

Turning Twenty pattern or Yellow Brick Road are great beginner patterns. Hang in there, you will get alot more advice teh longer this is up.

burnsk 09-08-2010 04:55 PM

Rail fence - fast and easy.

franie 09-08-2010 04:56 PM

BQ is fast and easy too. Large pieces.

erstan947 09-08-2010 04:58 PM

Rail fence, Nine patch, are good patterns to start on. I would not go Too large, also, not real little. Find a beginner book to help you get started. you might check at the library or at some free patterns web sites....Google "free easy quilt patterns". As questions here too.

Twisted Quilter 09-08-2010 06:12 PM

First quilt, I vote for the 9 patch.

retired2pa 09-08-2010 06:42 PM

I remember many years ago my first quilting effort was a 9 patch. I was so new to quilting that I cut out and sewed every square one at a time...LOL. Needless to say, it took me a long time to put anything together and NOTHING lined up!! Imagine that :) I almost gave up on quilting......glad I didn't and learned a lot along the way :)

Good luck, Beachbaby :)

bearisgray 09-08-2010 08:53 PM

What is BQ?

brenda21 09-08-2010 09:01 PM

I have never understood why people say that the 9 patch is great for beginners....I agree with *retired2pa* that it's hard to get everything to match up the first time and it can be discouraging....a pattern like Yellow brick road that doesn't have to be so exact on matching would be a much better choice in my opinion :)

tlrnhi 09-08-2010 09:05 PM

I'll 2d and 3d Yellow Brick Road.
It's one of my favorite patterns to make, especially for kids quilts.

Beachbaby12 09-09-2010 05:10 AM

Thank you all so far for your pattern recommendations. I have fussed with the nine patch and agree it's not the easiest to line up as a beginner. The rail fence may be better? I also do not know what BQ is? I will see if anybody else has any other recommendations and do appreciate all of your help.

Beachbaby12 09-09-2010 05:13 AM

I also felt like you did with the nine patch and felt like giving up but I am still going! Currently hand quilting Grandmother's flower garden and love it (with 1930's fabric). The next project is machine quilting with a pattern. Any other pattern recommendations, help is appreciated!

gollytwo 09-09-2010 05:36 AM

It's probably not good to use initials familiar to seasoned (how's that for avoiding older) quilters when offering advice to newbees

grandme26 09-09-2010 07:52 AM

Rail fence, 9 patch, really try anything.

Wow...not too many agree that this pattern is for a beginner! Now I'm really impressed with my first, a disappearing 9 patch.

Thanks guys.

I entered the world of quilting using a big block free pattern with 4 10 1/2" blocks, a sashing in between each of the four rows. Side borders and a smaller 5 1/2" block corners. It is very simple and only where the corner blocks need to match up is required. The finished quilt is 50" X 65". The pattern came from a free website and is from Claudia's Quilt Shop listed as for Absolute Beginners. I love to use this pattern over and over and it sure makes quilting go fast. I have even altered the pattern to be smaller for a baby's quilt. No stress using this pattern.

cwessel47 09-09-2010 09:05 AM

I'm voting for Rail Fence. I'm assuming that your four fabrics all work well together. No fussy seam matching. Good luck with whichever you choose.

retired2pa 09-09-2010 09:58 AM

Whatever you choose to make for your first quilt, please post a pic for us when your top is together:) If you need any more help...just ask :)

Looks pretty difficult for a real beginner

retired2pa 09-09-2010 04:40 PM

Gollytwo...I agree!! Why would this be considered for a beginner??

Lady Shivesa 09-09-2010 04:51 PM

My first two quilt tops were rail fences (this was about two months ago). I highly recommend it for an easy beginning quilt. :) It goes together quick and is very simple.

laughingquilter 09-09-2010 05:05 PM

Rail fence........that pattern is so easy and yet looks great when it comes together. You just don't have all the points to line up and worry about, etc. Whatever you choose, don't get discouraged....
stick to this board, you'll learn SO many tricks. Good luck! :D

retired2pa 09-09-2010 05:53 PM

Yes, Rail Fence is a great beginner quilt....no seams to match :)

Pickles 09-09-2010 06:03 PM

I would look here for a pattern that you would think of as
easy for a beginner :D

BellaBoo 09-09-2010 07:43 PM

Rail Fence is not that easy! Lots of seams to match when putting the rows together. I would recommend a no matching seam quilt like this one:

I am in the process of starting a quilt with 48 12" blocks with three colors and three fabric designs. I went to Quilter's Cache and checked on the size of the block and then I went to each design and found how many colors were used and picked out my 48 blocks. It is a sampler, however, you could pick out one design and do that one. Each block tells how many colors you need and it works like a charm. Edie

it also lists the difficulty..1 "pin" easy or beginner. and you can look by name of the block or by the size! great site!

You are right - it also mentions, paper piecing and shows if it needs templates or not. I don't do either yet (probably because I am too impatient, but it is there if you need it.) Edie

Why do you think Bq ia not easy.
Its only 1 121/2 sq of fabric and some strips.

Maybe that looks easy to you but I am new to piecing and that looks really difficult to me. Mind you everything looks difficult at the beginning even though I have worked with fabric and sewing for eons.

I am going to start with a disappering nine patch having watched the video on you tube, it looks as if it may be forgiving of mistakes.

vicki reno 09-10-2010 03:29 AM

The library or internet are great places to find ideas. Quilter's Cache has lots of patterns in all skill levels. Good luck!

Pam in WV 09-10-2010 03:43 AM

If you want to do blocks, take a look at www.thequilter'scache. There will be something there, I'm sure and they have a rating from easy to impossible.

My very first bed-sized quilt was a Rail Fence, and though I made a few 'boo-boos', it is still being used & loved, 15 years later!

steelecg 09-10-2010 04:44 AM

I had fun with the Turning Twenty and the BQ - fun and fast

I also like "experienced" quilter.

jenna p in ga 09-10-2010 05:04 AM

I have a book called "Sew One and Your Done" quilts from one block...one block made large. It is great for beginners because the pieces are large! I made the triple bear paw for my first and aside from making sure the "toes" were going the right way it was easy!!!
