Definitely Fons and Porter Complete Guide to Quilting. I bought the soft cover version and used it so much some pages were slipping out. I took it to the office supply store and had them put a plastic spiral binding on it. Now it lies flat when I open it. I refer to it all the time and I have been quilting for 16 years.

I have used many books, Pam Bono is the best. Her patterns fit and with proper seams etc, always match. Jolo

I agree El Burns is by far the best teacher.
For a basic book that covers everything go to Borders and check out the bargain books. I got Better Homes and Gardens Complete quilting book for 5.98 and have seen it since for the same price. It is a great reference quide. |
The Complete Guide to Quilting by Better Homes and Gardens. Klue recommended it. it is great! I got it from a site where they will find the cheapest price. I think you could google cheapest price for books and it might come up.

I just went to the library and picked out a bunch! Remember to take a bag, you'll want to borrow LOTS! I couldnt believe how many quilt books our library had, and its a pretty small one. Wonder what some of the big libraries have!

I like this one too. It's called "Your First Quilt Book (or it should be!) by Carol Doak. Another good one is "Make Your First Quilt" by M'Liss Rae Hawley. It gives you good instructions starting from the very beginning and by the time you've finished, you've made a very nice lap-sized sampler. It was my second quilt. I tied it rather than quilting it and it turned out really nice. If I were going to make it again, I'd stick with the colors suggested in the book. |
I started with Elenor Burns Quilt in a Day series. My first quilt was court house steps.

I have done two of hers now so it'll be a while before I do another! But their designing is incredible.
