Ditto to everything that has been said here about the Bernina. I have had several models since the late 70's as I upgraded over time. I have loved everyone but my favorite being my 1260. I like it so much that when I had an opportunity to buy another to take with me when I teach classes, I did it.
I also had Bernina machines in both the high school and middle school where I taught. Great machines with really hard use. Give yourself some time, learn to use it and enjoy! |
You can learn this machine and realize what you have been missing after youget to know it! I have a 830 and its lots different then the one I had but its wonderful machine and can do lots of things:)

I now have the Bernina 830 which is my third Bernina. I shared your feelings at first too but really like it and wouldn't use any other brand! The Bernina owner and his staff are exceptional!

Please relax don't hesitate to ask questions when you go to class. I feel your husband made a great choice and you will fall in love with your Bernina. I have a 730 I don't think there is a better brand on the market. Happy sewing.

You will love the machine as you take the guide classes. I have the 200 and I was overwhelmed at first but it really is not as difficult you might think. You are going to love it and what a wonderful husband.

Relax. Take your classes and enjoy your new machine. Any new machine has a learning curve, but you are going to love your new machine once you start to use it.

I have four Berninas and I wouldn't own anything else! There was a little bit of a learning curve, but like someone else said, the dealers are so helpful! Don't stress! You will be in love with it in no time! Enjoy!!!

My DH bought me a machine years ago for Christmas and totally surprised me and I didn't get classes with it, I was a little freaked out at first too but it was a mechanical machine and, with the help of the manual, I figured it out. I still have that machine. You will be amazed at the perks you can now enjoy that your mechanical doesn't have. And if the buttons for the various functions kind of unnerve you, get yourself a pencil and write the functions above the buttons, or tape little post it notes on your machine. The pencil will erase easily when you no longer need it. You'll feel more comfortable after the classes too, there is always a learning curve no matter how experienced a sewer might be. Relax and enjoy!

I was just thinking, I have been a Bernina user for 35 years. If my sweetheart gave me a Viking, I would feel the same way you do. Yes, go ahead and do what everyone else suggests, but have you thought of talking to the local shop that the machine was bought about a trade? Try selling it locally and with it new you are likely to get close to the price that your sweetheart paid for it. Then go buy your new Viking. If it were my challenge that is what I would think about.
For the record I have a Bernina 830e and the Quilt shop I bought it from in SD never gave me a class. I use youtube alot. I love it. Good Luck and let us know if you become a Bernina user or stay with your Viking. |
