Berninafoot #57 not a 1/4 inch???
 

I am confused I bought a bernina foot number 57 because I am having a heck of a time keeping my 1/4 inch seams straight. It is making a 1/8" seam, even if I move the needle to the left all the way it still does not sew a 1/4 inch seam what am I doing wrong...

The #57 foot has a guide on the right side--as long as your fabric edge is aligned with the guide, the distance from the needle to the fabric guide should be 1/4", and you should not have to move your needle position at all. If you're still having trouble, I'd return to the Bernina dealer for a quick demo.

Debbiemarie I responded to your other post before I saw this one. I drive a bernina too and I would highly suggest you purchase the #37 foot if one did not come with your machine. The edge of the foot is 1/4" and the inside of the foot edge is 1/8" from both sides. It's a perfect foot and I use mine more than any other. How long have you had your machine? I think all bernina dealers would look at your machine and help you with your issue.
Also I would suggest a straight stitch plate if you ever need to spurge on a bernina accessory ;-) it's great for piecing.

I have the new 830 with the wider width between the feed dogs, so my favorite #37 foot does not do well with it. I bought a #57, but I didn't like it. It's probably great for straight line piecing, but I rarely just put straight edges together. I didn't like it with piecing triangles to squares, etc. I use the zig zag foot and just move the needle over so that the edge of the foot guides my 1/4". I do agree with the straight stitch plate from mommysewist.

Maybe you need your sewing machine adjusted/serviced.

This foot must be adjustable as on the Bernina site it states that it can be used for 1/8" seam or 1/4" seam!

The #57 foot outside edge should be aligned along the edge of the fabric for a 1/4" seam and the needle position should be in the middle. The middle of the toe to the center needle position is 1/8". I have both feet for my 440 and the 37D for my 750 QE, and find them all to be perfectly accurate. You should not move the needle from the center position. If your machine is not accurate with the foot, I would take it in to the dealer for a check up, maybe there is a misalignment.

I have both the 37 and the 57 feet. I like the 37 foot the most. However the best thing I ever bought is the seam guide from Bernina. It is a metal bar that screws into my machine and is adjustable so it can butt up to the 37 foot. Works great. Cost less than $14.00 at my Bernina dealer.

According to my Bernina dealer, foot #57 was the one to have when piecing. Hope you get your problem worked out.
