I've seen a lot lately about where to get the best prices for quilting fabric, but nothing about where to find the best prices on quilting notions (such as needles, rulers, marking pens, etc). I am teaching a homeschooler hand quilting class and I need to get supplies inexpensively. TIA!
I know I get coupons from Michael's crafts and Joann's fabric to help with my cost of supplies.
I use my coupons from Joann's too or sometimes Walmart.
If you have a Hobby Lobby, they usually have a 40% off coupon (about every other week). As it gets closer to Christmas, their 40% coupon is every week. At least it was last year.
I get mine at JoAnn's when they have their notions wall 50% off and that is coming up on Labor Day wknd, I think.
jhittles
Joanns also has an educators discount card. Gives you 15% off anything you don't have a bigger coupon to use. Go to Customer Service and have something to prove you're an educator. If you don't (volunteer position) ask them what they would need. (I would call and ask to speak to store manager)
If you have a Tuesday Morning near you they often have notions at a good price, but it takes just checking on them often.

I second Jhittles Wholesale Sewing Supplies. Best prices and shipping is really reasonable. Make sure you know what you are buying because they charge a restocking fee.
Joann's with coupons or some online sites will have sales or give free shipping with a minimum purchase of 35-50 dollars like connectingthreads.com or fabric.com or joanns.com, you just kind of have to shop around and see where it would be cheaper

Anyone know anything about www.createforless.com ? Are their prices worth it? How do they compare?

Joanns raises prices to compensate for coupons.
One ruler I found at the local quilt shop for 11.50 not on sale and Joanns wanted 15 dollars for it. It was cheaper with a coupon but the shop also had a coupon so the shop was cheaper. |
I buy most of my notions at Joanns. However, there are some notions that are limited to sell only in quilt stores. Then I have to bite the bullet and pay full price or wait for one of their infrequent sales!
the Hancock chain also has 40 or 50% off sales on notions and they will honor Joann's coupons too actually I think all competitors

JoAnns is a great place to get all your quilting notions.
Get on their mailing list and use the coupons they send out, usually 40% off. They also list sale items which is very often sewing notions, as well as rorary blades, thread, etc. |
once in a while I get to use the 40% at hobby lobby but 99.5 % of the time every thing in the store is marked 30% off what a bummer!
I have shopped at createforless. Prices are not bad at all. Shipping is average-depending on what you purchase. Most of the time, though, you can get your items within a week. Good luck!
The Hobby Lobby here will let you use a 40% coupon on sale items. They give you 40% off instead of the sale price.
This was a recent discussion on sewing notions too:

Joann's coupon sale, Hobby Lobby coupon sale. Thrift stores. Deals and Dollar General. They all have something to use.
I buy alot online from http://jhittlesewing.funoverload.com/sewing/catalog.php
have had very good luck with them. |
Jhittles online site!

I agree with the other customers of J Hittles -- very large selection of product types from dozens of different makers, excellent pricing, reasonable shipping, and orders arrived fairly quick.
But it always pays to do your homework and compare. Remember to include shipping costs when you're figuring prices -- some companies charge based on the dollar amount of the order or number of items, others by shipping weight (the most equitable method IMHO). EK White Mtns of Arizona |
The best places I've used so far for notions are,
http://www.createforless.com/ http://www.discountembroiderysupply.com/ http://www.quilterswarehouse.com/ http://jhittlesewing.com/visitor/index_jhs.html http://www.quilting-warehouse.com/index.html There isn't a JoAnn's any where close and the closest Hobby Lobby is a little over an hour away so I shop online. |

When I need notions if I don't have a coupon or they are not on sale, they walmart in my area has the better prices for mats and rulers. Bobbins and needles I stock up on those when Hancock has sales. Hobby Lobby will be opening the end of October so I have to wait till then to see what I can get at what price.

JoAnns and jhittles, primarily. Sometimes the LQS when they are having a sale.
I am planning a trip to Mary Jo's Fabrics in Gastonia NC and was checking their website to see if it would be worthwhile. They do have quilting notions that seem reasonable enough to make the trip. They also have more fabric than I can take in in a day. You can also shop online with them.
walmart and coupons for craft stores
Haven't read the answers yet, but I like the Home-Sew company, and J Hittle is good, especially if you want to order in quantity.
