I have been reading about the 1.00 fq's at Big lots, both negative and positive....so to see for myself....
I bought 2 fq's from them. They felt wonderful.
I brought them home, took off tags, put two Moda fq's in with them and washed them together. All four came out nicely, If I did not know the fabrics myself, I don't think I could have told the difference. With the cost of fabrics rising for now, I figured, cost is important now too. The next test is to use them with other fabric I have and then see again. Maybe I should have been a fabric tester in my real life. ROFL. HUGS

I know there have been posts on here so don't tell me to go read, I wanted to share what I discovered. I always look at them when I go to Big Lots and don't buy. Never sure. Well now I am and the next trip I will buy more. They usually only have maybe around 50 or so. I love the colors too.

So , to each his own. Just wanted to throw in my two cents worth. Inquiring minds need to know. LOL. Now I do.

Hope this thread stays positive too.

michelehuston 03-19-2011 07:28 AM

I didn't know big lots sold fq!! Will have to look next time I go..thanks!

debbieumphress 03-19-2011 07:31 AM

It's in the same aisle with the scrap books crafts , etc, They also have a 5.00 table tote that holds lots of your tools for classes and such. Wonderful canvas. Have fun there.

quiltnmom 03-19-2011 07:32 AM

I bought some a few months back and they are great. However, haven't seen any in our store since:(

Stitchnripper 03-19-2011 07:34 AM

I agree with you debbieumphress - I have gotten then at Big Lots too. There are some that are great and some I can tell aren't, so don't get those. I don't always see them when I go, and last time I found them in with the plastic containers!! Always a treasure hunt at Big Lots.

cjomomma 03-19-2011 07:36 AM

I think the ones at big lots are better then the one at Walmart by a long shot.

debbieumphress 03-19-2011 07:43 AM

I asked them about having more and she said, they get them when they get them. I also buy other things and look and some months not there and other months, they have it. Like you say, always a treasure hunt there.
Cjomomma - At our walmart, which only sells precuts now. Arghhhhhh. if you look at the tags on the FQ packs, it says Cranston Mfg. FYI. Some don't. Hope Big Lots carries more for you. ♥

Hubby laughs at me when I stand there and feel them and ooh and ahhhhh. Usually makes him go to the tool section and leave me to my touchy feely thing. LOL♥

bluteddi 03-19-2011 07:47 AM

in the past ( don't live near a big lots now) U get what u get.. Besure and always do lots of touching and feeling ( like a fabricholic wouldn't!!??) Just as with every other place... They get some good stuff and some crappy stuff...

Good find..

Yep.. Big Lots is hit or miss... this was a hit!

quiltsRfun 03-19-2011 07:50 AM

Couldn't find them when I went to Big Lots. The store near me closed so I can't check as often as I'd like.

sewgull 03-19-2011 07:52 AM

Thanks for sharing your test info. Local Big Lots has FQ.
I purchased a QUILT PINK for Breast Cancer, published by Better Homes and Gardens, for $3.00 at Big Lots. Retail on the book was $35.00, I love the book it is hard cover with loose leaf pages. Gteat patterns and instruction.

amandasgramma 03-19-2011 07:53 AM

I haven't been disappointed in Big Lots yet....oh, except when they quit selling the nut rolls!!!! I didn't know they sold FQs...I'll look next time. BTW - I bought a skillet for $15.00 -- thought I'd use it for camping. Tested it in the kitchen..........it hasn't and won't go out to the trailer. I like it better than any other skillet I've ever had!

pennijanine 03-19-2011 08:16 AM

I have two Big Lots in my town. Guess I will have to go and check them both out. Thanks for the info!!

carslo 03-19-2011 08:43 AM

I have never found any at Big Lots but have purchased from Tuesday Morning and they are fine - not LQS qulaity but fine for my quits.

Lucymae 03-19-2011 09:06 AM

Cheap minds meed to know!!

BellaBoo 03-19-2011 09:09 AM

I tested David's Textile fabric bought at Walmart. I machine quilted a piece of muslin and cotton batting to a 1/2 yard and throw it in the wash with every load. It's been washed with every load for about a year now. The muslin is not doing too good but the fabric is fine, faded of course but no shredding or holes. And this fabric is $2.76 a yard everyday at Walmart close to me. I cannot tell any difference from David's Textile sold at Walmart from the David's Textile fabric sold at several LQS shops except the price. Not many bolts of it come to Walmart but when it does it's sold out in a few days.

debbieumphress 03-19-2011 09:26 AM

Thanks Bellaboo. I stopped in Decatuer on my way home from Oklahoma and their walmart had fabric. Yeah...... I did buy some and it was wonderful. I miss our walmart. I figure it's just like shopping at JOann's or an LQS, you just have to feel it and see if you like it. I heard from several LQS they go to market and buy fabrics just like Walmart etc and put it for sale in their shops. So, we can just be aware and look carefully.

"Cheap", I don't think so....just wise shoppers. LOL.

SherriB 03-19-2011 09:30 AM

I would love it if our Big Lots got some in. The store near me seldom, if ever, sells anything to do with sewing or quilting.

sharoney 03-19-2011 09:32 AM

Thanks Deb, will check it out!

bakermom 03-19-2011 09:34 AM

We're getting a Biglots soon. I'll watch for them.

frugalfabrics 03-19-2011 10:51 AM

we all have to be FRUGAL ...if it feels good, and the price is right, I say, get it!

Thanks, debbie, I LOVE my Big Lots, too. And all Big Lots aren't the same either. I can spend hours in there. I just purchased a floor lamp like the Ott lamps and I love it. $30 compared to $100!!

I also bought the canvas tote you're talking about. And I got lucky at Tuesday Morning's and found another one with more structure for my sewing table...$5.00!!

I guess you could say I'm a 5 and dime girl!! LOL

lallyann 03-19-2011 11:45 AM

So cool that you tested them!! The last time I went to Big Lots they had about 6 fat quarters :( and none were colors I really wanted. Unfortunately I don't have a Big Lots in town, and have to travel to the next town over. So I don't go too often. However, the next time I go I will be sure to stop in and check for the fat quarters. THANKS!!

Thanks for sharing about the fabs at Big Lots...I was there yesterday (only go into town occasionally) and didn't even check. Will be trying them out now because of your positive post! :)

annieshane 03-19-2011 12:31 PM

Yeah, a new source for fabrics! Never knew BL sold fabrics, but have bought lots of scrapbooking supplies there. Off to BL I go, right after church tomorrow!

Lv2sew2011 03-19-2011 12:34 PM

I was in big lots the other day, and I didn't see any fabric at all and that's why I went in there. I search every isle.

Airwick156 03-19-2011 12:41 PM

I havent been to big lots in several years. Although I am one of the lucky ones, if I go north 45 miles which we do to take my husband to his VA appointments and if we go south 25 miles or so there is a Big Lots there too. So next time we go to town if I remember I will have to check them out.

kwilter 03-19-2011 12:50 PM

ME, TOO!

Me either.

Thanks for the info...I didn't know Big Lots sold FQ's

BellaBoo 03-19-2011 12:57 PM

I shop Tuesday Mornings at least once a month. If I need or want something for the house, it usually shows up. I bought a Moen kitchen faucet for $99 and the same model was at Lowe's for $279. Most all our new plumbing fixtures, door knobs, hardware, switch plates, I bought at Tuesday Morning over time and put up until we were ready to remodel. I saved several thousand dollars. The contractor said he couldn't get the brands I had for that cost and I said I found them at a yard sale. No way I'm having my favorite store stripped clean by contractors to resell at their prices! Oh, lots of F&P and Olfa, Fiskars sewing notions there too.

Naturalmama 03-19-2011 12:59 PM

I haven't been there in a while - I'll have to look now! Thanks for posting about this! :)

Katia 03-19-2011 01:03 PM

I used to go to Big Lots a lot. Great way to waste time and you just never know what sort of treasure you might find. However,....... my last few trips there were a big disappointment. Some stuff was more expensive then major retailers. Plus the people were so rude. I was sorta shocked. Maybe it was just the location I went to, I should probably try again. Looking for fabric is always worth a second chance.

Ann L 03-19-2011 01:09 PM

Hummmmm guess I better look the next time I go to Big Lots. I usually find a few treasures there.

Well I am glad you posted this. I am like michelehuston I did not know Big Lots sold fabric of any kind  Thanks, I will have to check it out.

CarrieAnne 03-19-2011 02:01 PM

Thanks Debbie, I will look for them. Theres a Big Lots right by my work.

cassiemae 03-19-2011 02:17 PM

I have never seen FQ at our Big Lots store I plan on going there tomorrow I will check it out and even ask. :?:

quilter1943 03-19-2011 02:38 PM

Tuesday Morning has Fons & Porter notions sometimes. They are always a great deal there.

Gosh, never thought about looking for fat quarters at Big Lots ! Don't get there often, but when I do I'll be "hunting" for fat 1/4s too. Thanks for the heads up.
