Big Oops

I am so upset! On my beautiful blue angel quilt I got half way down in quilting and discovered two blocks have the HST in the wrong position. I checked and rechecked before I put it on the frame. Don't know how I missed it!!! It is too late to take off the frame and rip out stitches. Thinking maybe to embroider name and date or some data in the oopsies. What do you suggest. It was to be for my DSIL. I guess I will have to make a smaller quilt for her.
Thanks for letting me vent and for any suggestions.

Bobbielinks 04-18-2012 04:02 PM

This probably is not as noticeable to others as it is to you. If it is too late to correct it, I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure you want the quilt to your SIL to be as beautiful as possible, but, she would probably never notice the "goof". I would just quilt away and enjoy the process and she could accept it with all the love behind the gift.

ckcowl 04-18-2012 04:08 PM

no one is going to have any idea you made a mistake unless you tell them & point it out! any (non-quilter) will look at the quilt as a whole- beautiful quilt and believe you made it exactly as you planned- only a *judge* would really notice ---often other quilters don't even notice our (oopsies) unless we tell on ourselves & point them out-
so finish it up- if you truely can not live with it- decide then what to do about it- but chances are once its all done- quilted & bound- and you lay it out and stand back you will find it is just wonderful ---
did you know if the 'Amish' quilting world they will on purpose turn a piece backwards or even (in-side-out) because- only God can create perfection---
and when you look at their beautiful quilts you do not notice the (oopsie) unless you really study the quilt & know what to look for-
if your Dsil is not a (picky quilter) she will see the quilt as a whole & love it--only you will know it is not as you originally planned....unless you choose to point out your error & make a big deal over it-
best at this point to accept it is as it's supposed to be- and continue on-worry free.

nativetexan 04-18-2012 04:10 PM

Since no one on this Earth is perfect, why should a quilt be? I'd finish it and let it go. I"m sure it's lovely.

Why can't you remove it from the frame, fix the blocks and put it back on? Or have you quilted it already? I would have to rip it out, but that's just me:<

Mom3 04-18-2012 04:31 PM

Wellll........ I would think seam rippers work well even with a quilt on a frame. You could remove the offending sections and then, keeping it on the frame, hand stitch them back in properly.

Oh my, life is short I try not to waste my time worrying with the small stuff, I use my time on the big things like "where did I leave that quilt top?".

cmrenno 04-18-2012 05:04 PM

Carol Doak, a very famous quilter, puts a mistake in her quilts on purpose. I usually do too, but not on purpose.

Another Amish quilt in this world. I am sure it will be ok. As Carol Doak's mother said "nobody will even notice".

dunster 04-18-2012 05:44 PM

If it took you this long to notice, chances are that no one else will notice. Even if they do, would they care? Would you care? If someone gave me a quilt I would be so thrilled that I wouldn't be upset by any "novelty" in its design.

Dolphyngyrl 04-18-2012 06:03 PM

I would give it, non-quilter's almost never see your mistakes, she'll love it either way

luvstoquilt 04-18-2012 08:07 PM

My mother always turned one piece the wrong way on purpose..she said that was how they could tell it was "home made". She swore she did it on purpose. I treasure the ones I have that she made and so will you DSIL. Want to bet?

I was just going to say this. If anyone notices, you just took creative license...

annesthreads 04-18-2012 10:33 PM

In my early days of quilting I once made some place mats and only when I'd quilted them did I notice the wrongly placed pieces in no less than 3 of the 4. I was utterly devastated and furious with myself - but in all the years I've used them, no-one else has ever noticed the mistakes, and even when I've admitted to them, people struggle to spot them.

jemma 04-19-2012 03:13 AM

carry on and enjoy it as it is --made with loveing thoughts--if the oops are noticed-- point out many asians
believe any thing that is perfect attracts bad luck and you certainly did not want to pass on any bad luck

carrieg 04-19-2012 03:32 AM

It's always upsetting when you find a mistake in a quilt you made. Step away for it for a while & get your emotions out of the way. If it is for a wall hanging, you may want to take the time to rip out the quilting stitches, undo the error and fix it. But a lot of non-quilters don't recognize block layouts,so she might not realize there is an error. If you leave it in, it will bug you everytime you see it. If it is to snuggle with, it won't be noticed.

I have also discovered that taking a photo of quilts makes the mistakes jump out at me so I can fix them sooner.

Sew N Tune 04-19-2012 06:23 AM

I tell people the oopies, are special pockets of love, all gathered in one place. I'm sure she'll just love it, and don't point the mistake out.

My 1st quilting teacher insisted we all have a "God's eye" (mistake, happy accident, whatever) in all our quilts. Some people had to work to do it... mine came naturally & still do! I have an Xmas quilt that I pieced & hand-quilted years ago & I just noticed a couple of years ago that one of the blocks is turned completely all sideways. Oops...

Tell people you put that HST that way just to see if they'd notice... LOL!

mdall 04-20-2012 03:23 AM

I think the oops give them character and make them one of a kind. Im like cmrenno, I put them in just not on purpose. Just let it go. If you got that far before noticing it not a biggy.

anita211 04-20-2012 04:02 AM

I made a BOM and worked like crazy to get the darn thing sewn. When the top was finished, 2 blocks were turned. I sat down and proceeded to tear out the blocks and turn them. It took me forever. First, the quilt is something like 108 x 108... the blocks were each 12". It took ages to take out, turn them into the proper position, and then get them sewn back into the quilt top. I was satisfied with doing it (there was enough in the top to make in 'unperfect') but I wouldn't do it again. People that saw it before it was done said they didn't see any mistake. Granted these where not people that quilted, but I knew it was there and it would bug me forever. So... fix it if you can. Stitch by hand if you tear it out. Or applique something over it, if that is possible. But, I would leave it, if I had to do it over. It is lots of work.

If you looked and looked when you put it on the frame and didn't find the "mistake," no one else will either. Just let it go. :o:o

roadrunr 04-20-2012 04:40 AM

Chances are no one else will notice the mistake unless you point it out. Chances are you won't notice the mistake when you are done quilting. I would just finsih the quilt and send it off. The recepient will be very happy since the quilt is made with love. Please show us a picture of the finished quilt.

QuiltingCrazie 04-20-2012 07:13 AM

As someone told me today....if your galloping by on horseback would it be noticeable? If no leave it If yes then fix it!!

chaskaquilter 04-20-2012 07:22 AM

I have given quilts with a square turned wrong, color in wrong place, little pleat in backing, etc. Each and every one was received with thanks and awe at my "master" quilting abilities. Of course, these are non quilting friends. But I think even if I gave it to a quilting friend, they too would be thrilled. I know I would. Finish it up, wrap it up and give it with love.

mighty 04-20-2012 08:19 AM

No one will notice, it took you that long there is not way anyone else will!!!!

Beehiveof9 04-20-2012 08:48 AM

At that point I'd say it was just... artistic liberty? LOL. Let it go. If it took you, the maker that much to see the mistake, I doubt anyone else will. I'm sure the quilt is gorgeous! And I'm VERY sure it will be appreciated no matter what.

penichandler 04-20-2012 09:37 AM

I did the same thing when making a signature quilt for a friend's church. Made 2 new squares and applicated them on top of the ones going the wrong way. Did some faux quilting on the top so it would match the rest. No ever knew they were there.

carolynjo 04-20-2012 10:16 AM

Just go with it. No one will notice it unless you tell them.

grammysharon 04-20-2012 10:23 AM

This is just my response to doing the same thing to a quilt I made for my sister. I had finished hand quilting the quilt but hadn't put on the binding yet when I noticed my mistake. I knew this would bother me for the rest of my life if I did not fix it so I took out the hand quilting, took out the patch, rotated it and appliqued it back in and re-handquilted it! I knew I wanted my sister to have the best quilt I could make!!! So, really it is up to you how you feel about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

DonnaQuilts 04-20-2012 11:26 AM

I would not change it now. My quilting mentor, Hollie, told me, "nobody will see it and if they do they probably won't understand. Go on and finish it and do better next time. Only the quilt police would cause a scene and you know what we think about them:)

feline fanatic 04-20-2012 11:27 AM

I went back to your post of the picture of this quilt and I certainly can't see it in that picture.

mimiof4 04-20-2012 12:59 PM

my vote is to leave it, the only perfect one is God. Your DSIL will be so pleased with it she won't even notice and she will love you for taking the time to make her a quilt.

It was the side of the first row which is not seen in the picture. I decided that I will applique over the two oopsies when I finish quilting the rest of the quilt. Off the frame I will be able to baste the corrected HST in place and then quilt it to match the rest of the quilting. I will feel so much better about it. Thank you all for your comments. I thought about leaving it as is and just can't. It will haunt me:o

grandme26 04-20-2012 02:58 PM

Since you checked it over several times, put it on the frame to quilt and had started to quilt before you noticed it then it is not noticeble at all so leave it and don't tell anyone. It will look beautiful

nstitches4u 04-20-2012 09:17 PM

Non-quilters won't notice. Just go with it and don't tell them you goofed. They will never know.

That's too funny. One of my very good friends says that all the time, but I've never heard anyone else until now.

annesthreads 04-21-2012 02:02 AM

..my modern equivalent of riding past on horseback is to take my glasses off - does the quilt look OK in soft focus? If so, it'll do!

nanna-up-north 04-21-2012 03:26 AM

I think every quilt I've made has some OOPS somewhere. But I'm not perfect even though my DD says my projects look perfect to her. I agree with so many here.... if you didn't notice it before you put it on your frame, others won't even see it.

bluesnowdoe 04-22-2012 03:40 PM

for the block you want to replace you can make another square and hand applique it right on top and after its quilted it will not be able to tell

gramarraine 04-22-2012 03:59 PM

About 5 yrs ago I made a version of an Irish Chain and after it came back from the quilter I realized that I have made a mistake and turned a block wrong. The quilt was for my DD and she loved the quilt even with the mistake. I really had forgotten about the block until recently my 10 yr. old grand daughter took me to the bed room and showed me the mistake. It happened to be almost in the middle of the bed. Quite embarresing for a 10 yr. old to point out your mistakes.
