Big, small, or in-between - which type of quilter are you?

Confession, sigh...

I see all these large, glorious quilts full of pattern and color and I fall in love with so many of them, but my reality is they are just too intense for me to actually make. Thinking about this, I've noticed I like to make smaller things, maybe because I don't have a large space or large blocks of time, or maybe because I'll actually at some point finish them. The largest quilts I've made, two, were about 4'x5', and I hand-tied those, but I have made kid size quilts, changing pads, tote bags, cloth dolls, and clothing. I haven't tried applique and I would love to start with something small. I envision seasonal wall hangings, or simple affirmations like "peace", "love", or "it's all good", the size of a placemat. Will I actually make these? Time will tell.

Which size quilt makes you feel more you? What is your favorite thing to sew?

QuiltnNan 06-28-2019 02:36 AM

I like to make donation quilts for the cancer center. I can use many different designs and techniques. They can be finished in a shortish time. And I know that they are very much appreciated by the recipients.

Gay 06-28-2019 02:45 AM

I seem to make all bed sized quilts, though don't know what I will do with those I kept, some aren't finished yet. Most have been for family and friends (their request). Have done some placemats, but really can't be bothered with small/mini quilts. Love stack-n-whack, crazy, scrappy and also machine embroidered.

tallchick 06-28-2019 02:59 AM

I’ve made several king size quilts this past year and my preference is to make quilts that are at least twin size, or what I call cuddle quilts. Maybe because I’m tall, but I feel quilts should be big enough to wrap yourself up in from head to toe, or to share while watching a movie etc. The most comments I get from people about quilts are they are just too small to be actually useful for them, so they languish in a closet somewhere. I don’t make smaller items, though I would like to.

Conchalea 06-28-2019 03:06 AM

My fabric on hand seems to determine the size of my projects. I've had enough stash to make a few full-size quilts, but several have been lap-size. I also make table runners from extra blocks. I had some blocks left from a particular quilt & used 2 to make a bag, which turned out nicely. One extra block made a wall hanging because the colors didnt really fit in with the main quilt. I've made several totes & given them away. Others now hold my knit or crochet projects. I have made clothes, but I like quilts & totes because they dont have to fit!

pocoellie 06-28-2019 03:24 AM

I have to admit, the size depends on how much fabric the quilt takes. I've made from over sized king to baby, but the majority have been large lap sized, over 60" square. Make whatever makes you happy.

bearisgray 06-28-2019 03:32 AM

I like to make what I call "couch quilts" - about 60 t0 70 inches wide and about 80 to 85 inches long.

Big enough to put on top of a bed for extra warmth, and large enough to cover up completely while on a couch - and small enough to be able to wrangle through my machine to quilt it.

luvstoquilt 06-28-2019 03:37 AM

I make all sizes. Donation quilts for church are about twin sixe. I make Door (small quilts) for the nursing home where my mom lived. Also make fidget quilts for them. For my family sizes vary from King size to lap quilts. I have a list of “dying to make” quilts and it continues to grow!

Tartan 06-28-2019 03:54 AM

I make large quilts but I do small projects in between.

maminstl 06-28-2019 04:34 AM

I'm with Bearisgray. Made some smaller, some larger, but my favorite size is most usable to cover up one person completely.

juliasb 06-28-2019 04:46 AM

I tend to make mostly bed quilts as they are usually gifts for sleeping under. I have made a few smaller projects and pleased with the outcome. I have made a number of book covers and given those as gifts too. I have several wall hangings but now am out of space for more (who would have thought!). I want them put to use. There are so many quilting options that I love them all and always ready to try something new. I rarely have made a show quilt (only 2). I also make from time to time utility quilts for at the beach or for in the car. Any quilt you make is a treasure be it a bag, wall hanging, utility, bed or show quilt.

This is my favorite size too. I've started a few queen size, but haven't gotten as far as the quilting part yet. I've made a few wallhanging too.

peaceandjoy 06-28-2019 05:57 AM

Mostly queen sized, with a few twin/throw sized, as well as a few baby quilts that were gifts. Even those were large enough to go through preschool years, at least. I hate having my toes stick out, lol. But lately, have been thinking about doing smaller. How many quilts do I need around the house? DD's don't really care for quilts, they prefer either fluffy comforters or minky/fleece. My preference is for natural fibers.

What an excellent idea!!! I have to take down these measurements!!

TAMARATJO 06-28-2019 06:40 AM

I make a variety of sizes, from wall hangings to Queen size quilts. Lately, I have found myself trying to make quilts for specific purposes as I have made way too many! For example, double sided quilt for summer for my bed, duvet cover for the down comforter for winter, etc.

dunster 06-28-2019 07:29 AM

I make a lot of queen and king quilts. But I also like large throw quilts, and have made some wall hangings. I've never made a quilt that I intended for a table topper, but one of the "lap" quilts I made is serving that purpose. If I didn't have a longarm I probably wouldn't make as many big quilts.

Jordan 06-28-2019 07:39 AM

I like to make a queen or twin size as that are the sizes of beds in my house. If I am making for one of my grandchildren it usually is between twin size and double bed size. I feel I always learn something with every quilt I make. I have never made a king size quilt and have no plans of making one either.

IrishgalfromNJ 06-28-2019 07:45 AM

I don't make large quilts. My quilts are about the size of the "Couch Quilts" Bearisgray talks about. Most of mine are a bit shorter than 80 to 85". Those are the easiest sizes for me to handle and get quilted with my DSM. I have made seasonal applique wall hangings to decorate my front door, usually something I design. I also like to make home décor items like hanging dishtowels, table runners, sewing machine covers, appliance covers, and pillow covers. Along with quilts I sew clothes, bags, hats, and accessories. I think my favorite thing to make is a bag.

Iceblossom 06-28-2019 09:46 AM

When I think "quilt" I think roughly queen sized as are most of my projects. I've gone larger including a full 3 yard square king Log Cabin that I also simply grid quilted with my little old vintage sewing machine. Wasn't fancy but held up well -- better than me! I was crunkled for weeks and that was 20 years ago.

So for me a nice little crib size is a quick fun project, make it in adult colors and maybe 6" bigger and call it a comfort quilt. Going to make a preemie quilt this weekend, that will be like the equivalent of maybe four blocks and a border.

bearisgray 06-28-2019 10:32 AM

I just measured the two that are in our living room.

One is 59 x 78 and the other is 62 x 82 inches. This is the size they are after being used for 20 years!

We seem to prefer the slightly bigger one.

Irishrose2 06-28-2019 10:53 AM

I'm with bearisgray, though mine may be just under 80 inches in length. I hope the recipients find it useful. I have a queen/king on one machine now, but it's a first. I do a lot of Spicy Spiral table runners. One is in progress now for a shower on the 6th. I made two twin size for grandsons when they were deployed. I wanted them large enough to cover their beds. Numerous baby quilts 45x45. Prayer quilts for church are 48 ish by 58 ish, so I guess I'm all over the place.

petthefabric 06-28-2019 11:38 AM

When I started quilting, I made larger to extra large king quilts. When all our beds overflowed, DD didn't want anymore, lg space for lg wall hanging filled up, swiched to couch quilts. Then made art quilts. About this time I've had major injury to both shoulder with surgery. And discovered I don't like repitition. So the size has gotten smaller. Also, with art quilts that take a lot of thinking and design time, my quilts have gotten even smaller, some the size of a standard piece of copy paper. Now I'm working on comfort quilts from preme to large couch quilt (depends on the amount of fabric in stash). I'm trying to make larger art quilts with more story.

So to each his own and in his season.

SillySusan 06-28-2019 11:45 AM

I made several full size quilts several years ago... for myself, my daughter and my son. They are still in use. Now I make baby and little kids quilts and crib sheets. The quilts are about 42" square. Some are a little bigger and some are a little smaller. All are for donations.

hobbykat1955 06-28-2019 01:08 PM

Done w/quilts...unless a gift or donation...now it's wall size landscapes...

ckcowl 06-28-2019 01:26 PM

I generally make queen size quilts. For some reason I really have a hard time making a baby quilt or other small projects- they take me 10 times as long as a large quilt. Weird I know- sometimes it’s a serious block.

Stitchnripper 06-28-2019 01:39 PM

I make mostly couch/lap size except for table toppers, baby quilts, and last year a queen size. I like a size that I can lay over my neutral bed covering without it being a bed size quilt. I gave the queen size to one son for the guest room. I visit it when I am there (they live close so don’t sleep there)

Mkotch 06-29-2019 02:22 AM

I always tell myself, "from now on, I'm just going to make smaller, lap-sized quilts." But somehow they grow to at least twin- if not double-sized. A friend who paints says I "like to work large." Still, it's my goal to make smaller quilts in the coming year because I can't really afford to keep having my bigger quilts long-armed. I need to get better at quilting them myself.

grann of 6 06-29-2019 03:04 AM

I usually make queen size quilts. I also make lap quilts for the cancer center to raffle off for the chemo patients. I make them roughly 60 X 70 so they can wrap themselves up and be comfy. I used to make twin size for giving to whoever needed a quilt. But I had people looking at my quilt stash and saying "I wish that one was bigger", so now I make all my quilts a usable bed size. I can't be bothered with little quilts, no wall space for display. I longarm quilt all my quilts myself, so size is not a factor for what I can manage to quilt.

sinceresissy 06-29-2019 03:14 AM

I started out making bed quilts (queen, twin) but I am now making smaller lap quilts. They are easier to handle. I try to keep the size no bigger than 60 x 72. Each year it seems to get smaller and smaller. I am working on one now that will be about 54 x 60. I like to make place mats too.

rjwilder 06-29-2019 03:51 AM

I make baby and toddler quilts for charity. I'm trying to use up my stash and smaller quits are quick and easy. Done and out of my house.

SusieQOH 06-29-2019 04:20 AM

Most of my projects have been from twin to King size but with the baby coming I'm planning on lots of little quilts for her :) She will be my first grandchild!!!
Once in awhile I make a table runner or wall quilt but not too often. And also once in awhile I make things like hot pads and bags but not a whole lot.

Texas_Sue 06-29-2019 04:42 AM

I like to make lap quilts. Not too small, but not really bed size either. Usually easy to finish.

Kitsie 06-29-2019 06:22 AM

I now sew random 6" blocks, then add sashing to turn them into quilt tops for community quilts. I make the top and let others do the finishing.

EmiliasNana 06-29-2019 06:27 AM

I make all sizes, except king so far, but prefer baby or lap size quilts that vary from 42-60" wide and 60-72" long. Because I have a sit down mid-arm, everything is custom and it takes me forever to get one quilted if any bigger LOL
We have cathedral ceilings in our bedroom, office and living room so lots of wall space for hanging quilts and several are lap or twin sized. I have donated several for babies and chemo, given our five grandkids numerous quilts but they are all still quite young so have several in mind for "growing into". Remarkably we do not have one on our bed yet, though I have a Hunter's Star in taupes all kitted up for that someday.

mhollifiel 06-29-2019 06:31 AM

Charity/comfort quilts make up about 98% of the quilts that I help to make. Our guild has a charity bee of less than a dozen quilters who made over 400 quilts this year and the year before. Since we don't get in a hurry over anything, we were even amazed at the output. I loved luvstoquilt's description of door quilts! We make these around 36" wide for wheelchair recipients. The length varies a bit. They are great for using regular WOF backs and go together in a hurry.

But we also make lots bigger quilts. Some of those are in the range of bearisgray's "couch quilts" - about 60 t0 70 inches wide and about 80 to 85 inches long. We also support Safe Child and we try not to forget that children come in all sizes!

betthequilter 06-29-2019 06:39 AM

I have made one queen size quilt as a wedding gift for my son and his bride, one twin size quilt for my daughter's best friend who was fighting cancer, many wall hangings, many purses, tote bags, etc. I'm currently working on a t-shirt quilt about the size of a double bed. My favorite is miniatures, wall hangings and small quilt projects. Anything with needle and thread interest me. I do hope to make some large quilts, but I can't machine quilt them myself and I like to complete the whole project myself.

wildyard 06-29-2019 07:16 AM

I tend to make throw size since most of mine are comfort quilts. Usually around 56 x 72 but depending on the size of the pattern blocks I decide to make. I have also been making quilts for kids this year and they range thru all sizes because the kids are all sizes and ages.
I have made a few placemats but smaller things are not usually of interest to me. No one I know actually uses placemats, lol, or I would make more of them. Like others, I don't want to make something that will sit in a drawer or closet.

crafty pat 06-29-2019 11:58 AM

I am making a king size now and find that it is to much for me with my RA and old age. When I finish it I will stick to lap and baby quilts and table toppers and other small projects. It is upsetting as i love to make large quilts so I may make the tops and hire someone to do the quilting.

barny 06-29-2019 12:40 PM

Butterfly, you don't need to feel that way. Your creativity runs where you do what you are doing. No one's creativity is the same as another one.

Carol Jean 06-29-2019 12:45 PM

I like to make larger queen size quilts or king quilts. Table runners are also one of my favorites. Very rarely do I make a twin quilt unless it is for someone.
