Binding on double wedding quilt

1 Attachment(s)
About 10 years ago I was given a vintage hand pieced and quilted Double Wedding Ring quilt. Except no binding had been put on yet. I want to do that now so the quilt is usable. As you can see from the attached picture the batting and backing extends from the top itself by about 1.5 inches. What is the best way for me to bind? Should I go ahead and cut the batting and backing even with the top and then bind, or leave excess on and cut off after I attach the binding?

I would trim first and then bind using binding cut on the bias.

I always leave my edges raw until I put on the binding. I like to have the most possible fabric to work with, and then when I'm no longer working with it, I've got no problems trimming. I'd keep about 1" white space from the rings -- I'm assuming that you have the curves around each piece and not just on the corners, but if it wasn't trimmed up maybe they were deciding on whether to curve or go straight along the edges.

Good luck, that looks like quite the treasure and it deserves a binding. I find that there are often some pretty good reasons on why UFOs were never completed. Like Grandmother Flower's Garden, determining how to do the outer edge seems to be the sticking point.

I usually cut my backing and batting even with the front but I know some people leave about 3/8" of the batting so the binding will be full per say. Your binding will have to be cut on the bias in order to go around the curves. I have only made one DWR but would like to take the time and make another. Good luck to you and please share a picture when binding is done

I would use binding cut on the bias and sew on; then trim; turn to back and hand sew down.

Sounds like it can be done either way effectively. I think I will leave the excess on until after I attach the bias binding and then trim just beyond the edge. Thanks for your input. I will post a picture once it is all completed. Might be several days before that happens.

Such a pretty quilt. I can't wait to see the finish!

Do it however you think it will be easier for you. There are some good videos on YouTube on how to get the double fold bias binding to do the curves and the V’s.

I think leaving the batting and backing on until *after* you attach the binding will help stabilize the quilt as you add binding.

I would face it instead of binding. Look toward the end of this video to get instructions for facing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cnc0qdJ0A0c
