That's the way I do it - going off at the diagonal helps with making the perfect mitered corner in your binding.

When you stop 1/4" from end, machine a diagonal to the corner and off fold the fabric up and down the up has a fold on the diagonal the down is exactly level with the top edge . Now start from the top at exactly same distance as before.

I, too, am binding challenged. With practice .....and slowing down, mine improve with each project. My gosl this year was to concentrate on sewing better bindings. Good luck! N
