When piecing your binding strips do you press the seams open or to the side?

Everything I have read says press open.. to cut down on the bulk at the joints .

If I am cutting it close on the length of my binding, i.e. barely making it around the quilt, I use a straight seam and press the seam open.
But for the most part, I piece my binding using a 45 degree seam at the joins and press those seams to one side since the seams do not match up when the binding is folded over. |
As you can see, it's a matter of personal preference.
