Binding

Would you pay to have someone hand bind your quilts?

QuiltnNan 10-09-2017 03:23 AM

not as long as i am able to do my own hand sewing. it's a great project for our Tuesday afternoon get togethers... all hand projects there

SusieQOH 10-09-2017 03:37 AM

I do my own binding but if I hated doing it I would certainly pay someone else to do it.

grammasharon 10-09-2017 04:28 AM

I enjoy binding a quilt but if I didn't I would think nothing of hiring someone to finish it. Kind of like machine quilting.

mic-pa 10-09-2017 04:31 AM

I not longer can do it by hand so it all gets done on the machine with a fancy stitch. my quilts are used and abused and not for show at least most of them so it works for me

Not likely. I do think hand binding is nicer because the stitches are hidden, but for various reasons I machine bind my quilts. It's not so much that I wouldn't be willing to pay someone, but more that I don't want to go through the effort of finding someone who can do it well and is reliable, then having to get the quilt to them and then get it back when they're done. If the Hand-Binding Fairy came to my house and did it while I was asleep, I'd gladly leave the money under my pillow.

pewa88 10-09-2017 05:30 AM

No. I bind all my quilts by machine. Perfectly acceptable by me and I am the only one who counts, lol.

ckcowl 10-09-2017 05:33 AM

I bind mine but I also bind for customers who ask me to.i quilt for some folks who have arthritis or other issues that make binding painful or impossible, so it’s a service I offer.

ArlaJo 10-09-2017 05:49 AM

If I am making it for a special person I will pay to have it done because my by hand looks awful. I do everything else on the machine.

dunster 10-09-2017 05:57 AM

I would if I hated doing it, or if I couldn't do it. At this point in my life I actually enjoy hand sewing the binding. It means one more quilt is almost done.

Boston1954 10-09-2017 05:59 AM

No, I would rather do my own. It is nice to have a project while watching television.

Macybaby 10-09-2017 06:13 AM

I machine bind most of my quilts, and would only consider hiring someone to hand bind if I was planning on entering the quilt in a competition. So the quality would have to be very, very high. I'm very good at it myself, just don't especially care to do it.

Totally agree with you.

NZquilter 10-09-2017 08:43 AM

Yes, because my binding never turns out nice. :)

linda8450 10-09-2017 08:50 AM

I Hate doing anything by hand, to me that is a four letter word! lol I have a friend in my guild that loves hand work, so I pay her (a very reasonable $20 per quilt rate....so why not?) and she has it back to me in a few days. We eat dinner together a few days a month, go to retreats and guild meetings, so swapping it is never an issue. I have done the dreaded hand work, it looks fine. I just don't enjoy it, would rather move on to something else!! I have also done machine binding, but I think I try to hurry and it never looks as good as I would like...I guess I should practice more!

Quilt30 10-09-2017 09:20 AM

For those who bind by machine........what is your technique. What do you consider "good machine" binding. What do you strive for. I find that majority of videos on machine binding are less than satisfactory and don't answer my questions.

Doggramma 10-09-2017 10:09 AM

Probably not since I do pretty much all my bindings by machine. They've improved with practice. I, however, would pay to have someone sandwich my quilts.

ArtsyOne 10-09-2017 11:12 AM

Since I make mainly baby quilts that will get lots of laundering, I machine bind mine. I really like hand-sewing though, so I have done that for others at a rate of $50 for a lap- or twin-size quilt

quilts4charity 10-09-2017 11:37 AM

Nope, I do it by machine. Most folks don't give a hoot that it's done that way and I give all mine away. I don't do show quilts just use them til they fall apart quilts!!!

cathyvv 10-09-2017 11:40 AM

Yes, I hate to bind. But since I make so many charity quilts, I machine bind.

Terry in the ADK 10-09-2017 12:06 PM

A quilting buddy told our group that machine binding was actually a sign of wealth "way back when" because most did not have machines. Showing you did by machine binding your quilt was a way to indicate that!
I mostly bind by hand because I actually enjoy it. Making a label, not so much!

Peckish 10-09-2017 01:04 PM

I do get paid to hand bind quilts. If your question originated because you're looking into doing it for others, PM me. I will be happy to answer any questions.

Stitchnripper 10-09-2017 01:59 PM

I do most of mine by hand and sometimes depending on quilt will machine quilt it front and back. If I couldn't do it I would hire it out, but right now I enjoy it and have the time and no hand/wrist/joint issues to preclude me doing it.

cashs_mom 10-09-2017 02:00 PM

I enjoy doing some hand work. It provides and nice quiet time for me to relax. However, if I didn't enjoy it or couldn't do it, I wouldn't hesitate to pay someone else to do it.

QuiltNama 10-09-2017 07:03 PM

I hand and machine bind for others. Some of them can no longer do their own sewing due to health issues. It pays me very nice.

MadQuilter 10-09-2017 07:33 PM

Not an issue for me as I like doing it. It gives me the chance to enjoy the quilt for a little while before gifting it to someone else.

Reba'squilts 10-10-2017 03:56 AM

I do my own. It makes me feel good to sew the binding in the evening. I see the end of the process on the horizon!!! I do have arthritis in my hands, so that may change in the future. Hope I can continue because I like the fact that my quilts are entirely mine. Of course mine are just usable quilts, I do not make the beauties that some of you do!

DeltaMS 10-10-2017 04:22 AM

I actually like this part. I listen to an audio book or a podcast and feel like I am multi-tasking.

junegerbracht 10-10-2017 04:38 AM

I like handwork but if I hated it I would certainly pay someone to do it. Sort of like sending a top out to be quilted. Life is too short to do what you hate if you can afford not to.

juliea9967 10-10-2017 06:39 AM

No. I machine bind all of my quilts now with the flange binding technique. It is so easy and looks so nice, and I am not interested in placing them in any quilt judging shows. However, I have placed them in the local Quilt Guild shows and won many prizes with the flange binded quilts.

klswift 10-10-2017 06:41 AM

I do most of my bindings by machine. Often I use a decorative stitch for an added design element. I have done this for years and the children's quilts (while heavily used, abused, drug around and many times washed) have never had a problem with binding coming loose.

bearisgray 10-10-2017 06:46 AM

Maybe - but I would like to see samples of their work first.

Yes, I have paid someone to bind my quilts. Make sure their stitching is good enough for you. I had a quilt with scalloped borders I planned to enter in a quilt show. I paid a quilter that offers this service to bind it for me. I did not like it and the person redid it. Not good enough. I removed all her stitches and did it myself. :-). Nice job! Haha

I don’t like to do the binding because I have carpal tunnel and my fingers go numb after a few stitches. Makes the binding process a real struggle for me.

Now I have a lady that I trade binding for quilting. She does a pretty good job, but if I am planning to enter the quilt in a quilt show, I do it myself. That way, there is no one to blame if I dont get good comments on the binding. :-). :-)

No. I machine sew my binding on and they look very nice. I enjoy all of the quilt making process.

dellareya 10-10-2017 09:03 PM

Call me crazy, but hand binding my quilts is my favorite part of the entire process.

Jeanette Frantz 10-10-2017 11:13 PM

No, actually, I prefer to do my own binding -- I'm fairly good at it, and I'm not satisfied unless I do the absolute best of which I am capable.

Aurora 10-11-2017 01:52 AM

I guess I am crazy too! I like doing the binding by hand and I am confident no one could do it to suit me.

Roxanne 10-11-2017 04:25 AM

In a skinny minute! If I had the financial resources, I'd also hire out the sandwiching and quilting. But that said, I love a handmade quilt with uneven stitches, thread that has bunched in places and wonky blocks! The love of the maker shines through all the imperfections I find in my work and the receiver never seems to notice!

solstice3 10-11-2017 05:49 AM

No, it is something I do while "watching" tv with DH

Jordan 10-11-2017 07:25 AM

I love doing binding on my quilts. It means you are on the "down hill run!" and almost finished. It is a sit down job and I don't get to sit down much so I feel accomplishment when I am sitting and sewing binding.
