Binding
What is the measurements do you use to make your binding strips.
I cut my strips 2-1/2" wide
I cut mine at 2 1/4". :)
I cut mine 2 1/4" wide.
I cut the strips at 2 1/2 inches. I stitch it on the quilt at a sweet spot right between between 1/4 " and 3/8". When folded over it is almost perfectly in half. When I sew at 1/4" there is too much binding on one side.
Rhonda K ~ That's interesting. I cut at 2 1/2" and stitch a fat 1/4" to get equal binding on each side. What batting are you using?
i cut mine at 2-7/8,
the finding finishes at about 7-16 inch wide. why that width? because if i set the needle at the most left position and sew with the right edge of the presser foot on the edge of the binding and quilt. i like the look of a wider binding. |
I have transitioned from 2.5 to 2.25 and now I do 2 inches. It is a thin binding but it is full and even. I don't use a walking foot and I don't serge the edge. I've been happy with the results. I like to sew in front and hand stitch to back. I don't have any arthritis, carpal tunnel issues, etc that keep me from doing this. If I am going to sew on the back and machine stitch to the front I do a 2.25 binding.
Always 2-1/2", it works perfectly for me. I now machine sew all bindings.
i use 2.25 and my bindings are always full. i was chatting with a local judge the other day and a perfectly lovely quilt did not win a prize because the binding was partially 'empty'
Keep in mind that the type of batting you use affects how wide to cut your binding strips. A thinner batting will benefit from a narrow cut on the binding because less of the binding is taken up by turn-of-the-cloth.
I do 2-1/4 inch straight of grain double fold binding on most quilts. 2-1/4 bias binding for scallops.

With that in mind, I have done some bindings at only 2", if I am only wanting to sew at 1/4". Some quilts you have to keep to that strictly. Eg. star points right to the edge, or if the quilt is all squares, you dont want the squares to be out of proportion from the rest of the quilt, etc. Binding widths can pretty much be whatever you want!!! .... sometimes I make a really wide binding, starting with 5" or 6" of fabric before folding and attaching. It puts a nice frame around the quilt. |

I really appreciate all your responses. I've had put bindings on a couple of quilts before but you know that thing that comes around sometimes "Brain Fog" well its been visiting me lately. Lol
The quilt is for my cousins son ishouldve had this done and sent but things can cause detours. I love this board always alot of help. Thank You all again. |
I like wide bindings so I cut mine between 3 and 3 1/4", depending on how much fabric I have available. I sew between 3/8 and 1/2 inch.

I use 2.25 and almost always use W&N batting.
2.25" for cotton batting, but 2.5 for polyester or high loft. I also leave an excess 1/8" of batting/ backing beyond the top whenever possible to keep binding full. I machine front & hand sew back. Just keep a small bit prepared binding pinned to your design wall or bulletin board near your machine. I do that with a sample of " majic binding", because l can never remember my cut measures for that, lol.
I use a die cutter to make 2.5" strips and sew with a generous 1/4" to the back, then fold to the front and machine stitch down, sometimes I do a wide prefolded satin binding, that one I like to do with a wide zig-zag stitch.

I like 2 1/4 inch binding too. I lost points from a judge because my binding wasn't full. I cut 2 1/4 inch binding and then after I sew it on the front of the quilt, I trim away the extra batting and backing fabric but I leave about 1/8 in beyond the edge of the quilt top to make sure my binding if full. I hand stitch the binding to the back of the quilt. It is a good 'TV' time activity. |
Well, don't laugh. I am self taught and only cut mine 1 1/2 inches. Most of my quilts are gently used, and I've never felt the need for double binding.
I use 2 1/2" because I have a GO and have the 2 1/2" strip.
I used to cut 2.5 but I ended up with some space and didn't care for that so I started cutting at 2.25 and it seems to work better for me.
I've only done binding with bought bias binding but I would like to do my own. I have a 2 1/2 inch strip cutter so how do you go from these strips to binding? Do I need to fold the edges in and iron or is there an easier way?

I cut my binding at 2 3/4 with 3/8" seam.

width od binding strips depends on the look i want for the binding on finished quilt. i machine stitch to front using 1/4" seam & hand stitch to back using hidden stitch. i will sometimes fill areas where batt is thin with small scraps of batt. gives even fullness all around.
and i sew down miters with hidden stitch front & back. and i don't enter into shows ..i was just taught that finish should be as best i can do it. and i have severe arthritis in both hands and wrists and fingers ..and carple tunnel for many years. but i have loved sewing since early childhood & it will take a lot to make me stop. |
I use 2 1/4" binding with a 1/4" seam, if it is to thin when folded over use a small sliver of batting to stuff, I make small slivers of batting for this purpose.
I'm the odd one out here. I cut mine 3 1/2". I keep it entirely filled with batting and love the look. The wider binding does take a little more care with the mitered corners, however. I take a half inch seam.
I use 2.25 when the quilt is quilting cotton top and back, but if I'm using Minky, I'll switch to 2.5 inches.
2 1/4" for me....I like a smaller tighter binding on my quilts and table runners.
I usually let my binding be like another border. I cut it 6" or more wide. Double fold it and sew it like regular binding. The corners miter perfectly the wider the binding. If I want the small binding look I sew 1/2" topstitching around the binding. I get very creative with my bindings. I get a lot of how did you do that? LOL
It depends on the project and whether hand sewn or machine...either 2 1/2 or 2 1/4.
2 1/4, double bias

I just bought a binder attachment for my Bernina. I am learning to use it so that I can machine bind...my fingers don't bend like they used to...biggest size is 1.5 inches....I am amazed at how nice it stitches...
I do a test stitching with a longer stitch for about six inches to get my "exact" needle setting.
It usually takes me two or three tries to "get it right." |
I suppose I could do it on a "test sandwich" - but then I would miss out on all the unsewing I do on the actual quilt!
If the seam is too narrow, I can leave it - it will just be covered - |
Another fun option is to create a flange border - I just did this with my last finished quilt and really liked the finished look. Here’s a tutorial if you’re interested - https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.com/...-tutorial.html
