I bind using silk thread that blends in the binding and I don't know what stitch I use. More of a running needle turn applique stitch.

I'm hand binding a quilt. For those of us that prefer hand binding, do you whip stitch yours, or do what I call the hidden running stitch where you run the needle under the binding edge and then grab into the quilt again. Binding takes so much time, but I like this last way as the stitches seem to be hidden for the most part.

bearisgray....hidden stitch is something off the top of my head because I didn't know the proper name....sorry! Think of women who hand applique and you never see the stitches...same thing.

I pull off approx 18" of coordinating thread, thread my titanium needle, and then with the 4-5 inch short end, wrap this short thread around my finger twice - take the circles of thread off my finger, and put the needle thru the backside of both loops, and then gently pull the short tail of the thread, and it will place a knot at the base of your needle, and you will not have your thread coming out of the hole in the needle, after you have used up the length of thread, snip the secured knot from the needle and rethread on a new length of thread. This method will help you sew your binding on without the annoying knots that form, when using two threads to stitch.

I do a blind stitch like you use when hemming a garment. I leave a small distance between stitches to make it secure. I enjoy doing the binding but I enjoy hand sewing as well.

I do the hidden also, but I lock it every 4th stitch. I enjoy binding while watching tv, so it doesn't seem to be a chore for me. LOL
