I have been working so hard to get my business ready to open and my dh job shut down and he was offered a higher position at a plant in Austin,Tx. and he ACCEPTED! Can you believe this! All of my dreams have went up in smoke! I am in Tx now so he could look at the plant and the city. I was hoping he did not really care for it but nooooo he loves it. When we get back home we're moving. I am numb! My kids live in Killeen and is an hour away. I know no one in Austin or anywhere else in Tx.

Relax..Austin is a wonderful city once you get used to it! They have bumper stickers that say "Keep Ausitn Weird"! It is a very hippy, groovy, village type city! And I only live 45 mins away! So maybe we can hook up and be quilting buddies or shop hop buddies! You never know!

I do know one thing: When God shuts one door, He opens another!

Bummer. You must be really disappointed.

Try to look at this as a new adventure. You will meet people. Maybe you can find a house with a wonderful sewing space for you. :)

Hopefully your business will only be on hold and you can work on it once you are settled.

sorry to hear but you know things will work out, happy your hubby found a job, and I see above that there is another quilter that doesn't live to far from Austin so you can be quilt buddies, get to know other quilters online and I bet you can find some in the Austin, Texas area, and please get your business open up there, good luck

I have moved a lot in the 39 years we have been married (Air Force and GTE) and have always looked at it as an adventure! The first thing I have done in a new city is take the phone book and look up all the fabric and craft stores, or any other particular place, map them out and go visit them. And that's the advice I gave my daughter-in-law before she married our Army son 10 years ago.

I hope you will be able to see this the same way. And be thankful he has a job, even a better one, as in this economy, that isn't always the case. We spent 4 years in TX and there are many great places there--I hope you will be happy. Good luck!!

dh has done this a few times to me with school.. but you will love austin. i go there a few times a year with dh on bus.. and it is alot of fun ... good luck on your move.

What type of business were you going to open? Is it possible to open that business in Austin? I can totally understand your frustration from getting everything just-so to open it where you are and then to have to drop all of it. {{{hugs}}}

My niece lives in Austin, it is a huge city but it's very nice.

With any move you must look at it as an Adventure, a new place to explore. Look up the quilt shops & perhaps find a Quilt Guild to join. You'll find friends with same interests. Hopefully you can concentrate on opening your business there. Your husband has a job, unlike many today, plus you will only be an hour from your kids! Sounds great to me....

Just because the job's "in Austin" doesn't mean your home will have to be. There are lots of communities around Austin proper that will allow you a more "neighborhood feel". And even though now you are looking at Killeen as mileage away, it really *is* just a hop and skip up I-35 or, even better, through the countryside in Williamson County. Check out Georgetown, Salado on your way north.

The area has fabulous restaurants, scenery, and things to do. Lots of advantages. And next fall, you'll be right there for the Houston International Quilt Festival!

I know that moving can be a life changer but ... Austin is pretty cool!!! The capital is there, the LBJ library is there, Congress street is super cool, and the music is so diverse that there just isn't anything to not like. And the FOOD!! There aren't enough words to describe the FOOD!!! There is a lot of history in Texas. Remember the line from their travel commercial, "Texas isn't another state, its a whole 'nother country", it is.

I live in the Dallas area, but have a daughter in Austin, so we head that way fairly often. In fact, I will be there the weekend of the 20th. PM me if you want to meet and shop!!!

Any change can be hard- just try to be happy for him and hope full for a new place to call home .

I know it's easy for us to say be thankful your hubby has a new job - and you should - but my first reaction was how could he not have at least talked it over with you before accepting! I am assuming he was aware you were opening a business soon, right? Anyway, just wanted you to know that if you had this reaction, it is understandable! However it is a done deal and you really will have to make the most of it! God has a plan for all of us and it is up to us to seize these opportunities to grow. So just like you have made lots of new friends here, you now have a chance to make more friends in Austen. I wish you all the best and keep us informed.

Congratulations to your husband. You don't say how far you are from your kids now, being only an hour away would be good. I'm 10 hrs away (by road) from mine, 2 hrs by air.
Maybe you'll be able to start your business in your new area.

You didn't say where you're moving from, but at least Austin is relatively close to the kids. As several people have pointed out, it's a nice place to live. My mom lived north of there for a number of years before she passed. The climate is pretty good - especially in winter. Housing in Texas is cheaper than almost anywhere else in the country, so that should be a plus. If it's a quilt shop you're thinking of opening, probably it will be good for that, but having to start all over with those plans is surely a big let down, especially if you already have a lease and inventory to deal with! It will be awhile before you get your bearings, but maybe it will be for the best in the long run. Best wishes.

Thanks you guys! I was so disappointed I did not see anything positive. This place is so big and I am scared. The traffic is so much busier than what I am used to in the country in Georgia. I was opening up a quilting shop in my small town. OMG! The bridges almost sent me into cardiac arrest(LOL). This guy on his job has abig nice house in a place called Elgin,Tx. We suppose to look at it tomorrow. Hopefully I can lose my fear and drive around the place alittle bit but not without dh! Again Thanks you guys. You are the best :lol:

It is tough being uprooted. My kids live 500 miles away so I know how you feel. But in today's world, just getting a job is great. Can you set up your business in the new town?

Oh this stinks. My mother's education and career were completely disrupted by my father's career, but eventually she said enough was enough and stopped moving with him. They're more happily married now than ever.

But that's another story. LOL

The MOST important part of your business has not changed - that's YOU! Wherever you are, you will be able to make your dream a reality. Lost your community? Whatever endeared you to your current hometown will make you a star in the new one, too.

Believe in yourself. Sometimes life hands us lemons, but nobody ever said you couldn't bring your own tequila and salt. ;)

Oh hon, i'm so sorry. But Texas is great. I'm from there but live in Colorado (too far away). Austin is a great City and has lots to offer. when you get settled, look for quilt shops and other quilters. you will find them.

Austin is a fabulous city!! I'm so sorry you've had the rug pulled out from under you however. I've had that happen as well. Give Austin a chance. There are beautiful and numerous quilt shops, huge JoAns, great food, music of all kinds, lots of lakes,rivers, GREAT winter weather, hot summers for water sport types, great health care and lots and lots of friendly Texans. I'm in Round Rock a suburb directly north. PM me when you get settled. We'll do lunch!!

Believe me, those roads and big interchanges can be challenging! I swore after my first trip to Dallas that I would never drive on LBJ freeway--but I did. But I also found ways to get where I wanted to go without driving on the busy interstates and roads. Hopefully you'll be able to do the same. I hope you will be able to open a quilting shop there and have a wonderful business. If you've always lived in your hometown, this is definitely a shock to the system! May it be a "good" shock!!

It will be okay. I'm sure you will make new friends in Austin. I would be so thrilled and thankful if my husband were offered a better job, especially after losing his present one! I would have to call that a huge BLESSING, even if it does involve a move.

My brother used to live in Elgin. It is a nice little town! Don't worry so much and open your shop there. I can't recall if there were any LQS there, but I believe you will do just fine. :-)

My sister lives in San Marcos, about half an hour south I think. When I visited I was amazed at what a fun area it is. They don't spend too much time in Austin, but they do spend a lot of time exploring different little towns around the area. I went there for a visit last spring and I was amazed at all the fun places there are in a day trip distance. We went somewhere every day looking for quilt shops and just fun historic places. There is a little town south of Austin, but not far, called Wimberley. I fell in love with that little town at first sight. They have the cutest little touristy shopping area. We went there twice but I still don't think we saw everything. We also went to the Market days that they have there. It was amazing ! It is so big you could get lost there. But there is food and a big covered place with tables and bands or singers all the time. So a good place to rest and get your bearings.

Another place we went to was Gruen. It has a dance hall that is supposedly one of the oldest in the country. Lots of famous people have been there and it has even been in movies. There are lots of cute shops and antique places around there as well.

My sister has made a project of learning about all the little towns and their histories. She is not very good at exploring by herself, but with me for support we had a great time and found lots to do. Plus we could go at our own pace. She does not like driving on the freeway too much either, so she took me on a lot of back roads, thorugh out of the way places most people would never see.

I think the thing I loved most about the area was how friendly everyone was. It took a bit to get used to being called Ma'am but otherwise it was great. Every one says hi when you walk into a store, and you never feel ignored. But in a welcoming way, not in a "are you going to steal something?" sort of way.

Oh and don't be surprised if you find the best barbecue in crazy out of the way places you would never expect. My BIL kept saying that my sister had to take me to Rudy's for barbecue. I think we went to the one in New Braunfels, but I am not sure. Anyway we pulled into a gas station called Rudy's and I thought we were getting gas, but nope, lunch. I don't think I ever ate at a gas station before. We walked through the minimart part and into a huge room full of the most wonderful aroma and lots of tables covered with red check table clothes. It was a great experience, and the food was great too. We went to lots of other barbecue places but that was the best.

I found several great quilt shops too, and spent a fortune. I would move there in a heart beat if it was closer to my kids. I live 8 hours away now and that would be much farther. But maybe if I could talk them into coming with, hmmm, idea.

Guess it felt like a sucker punch to the gut.So sorry this happened. Well, being cliche' As they say when one door closes another one opens. Put your computer to work for you. Make a postive list, first & most important .... A list of quilt shops in the area, area restuarants and so on.Then make that con list. I think that you'll find the positive outweighs the negative. Life is to short, BLOOM where your planted or in your case transplanted. Will say a prayer for you & your family. Remember the words of Lee Ann Womacks song "Dance".

Good luck. It can be tough to start over in a new place. I hope you didn't have too much invested in your business that you can't take with you.

I am sorry about your business, but with my husband out of work for a year now I would be glad to have him working again.( He's still looking.) Can't you open your business in Austin, of course after you get to know the area? Be glad he has a job.
