A quilt store near my parents went out of business and I bought 12 yards of moda black. The thickness of the fabric was AWESOME. The newer moda black feels thinner, but I still like it. I am very picky about what I use my old stash on because I love the quality and feel of the black.

Michael Miller makes a very rich black.
The piece I bought shrank over two inches in width when I washed it. (Yes, I did soak it in hot water) |
Kona goes for 3.98 a yard at Hancocks of Paducah. Their Moda Bella is 4.98 a yard.

Kona cotton is good, and also RJR's Cotton Supreme. It has a slight sheen on one side of the fabric; the reverse is matte. It's nice and dark and... well, RJR's line of solids just doesn't get a lot of advertising, I guess. Our sales rep tells us that RJR is the black that Keepsake Quilting sells, so I guess they like it too!

Michael Miller also makes a wonderful black. My LQS has both Kona and Michael Miller.

I think that the sales reps give out just enough info to "talk up" the lines that they themselves are selling. Personally I don't appreciate it when they disparage their competition's products. !! |
